Do it
Wisky got tons of credit for losing to three major teams. PSU has everything to gain and nothing to lose.

Let's play St. Mary's
With all the talk about teams not wanting to play these mid majors it could pay off for PSU. PSU should step up.

There are some fun options there.
I mean, we don’t know what dates are open on our 2009-10 schedule, of course. But still, some interesting non-con games are on that list:
Home/Home proposals: Arizona State, Arkansas, VCU, LaSalle, Robert Morris, Mississippi State, Siena, Cornell, New Mexico, Ole Miss, Old Dominion, Drexel, Richmond.
Appealing away “Guarantee games” (not sure if those are for little schools only): Okie State, Louisville, Pitt, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Maryland, Nebraska, Kansas.

Fickled thing
No good teams would come to PSU for a one and done. Only teams like St. Francis would do this one and done. Not even A-10 teams would go for this. We are in a tough spot because we have not yet arrived, so no one knows what exactly what we will bring to the table. Hence we would probably have to swallow our pride, lose some money, and schedule 2 for 1’s away

I have an idea
Let’s get a group of BSD’ers together and make a team. We’ll call up Perry and offer to play any open date they have for just $100,000.
Sadly, I bet we could beat NJIT.

Frankly
Who is to say we’re not a Division One basketball team? Well, who would say it before lost by 40 points and collected our 75,000? I figure we roll John Cheney style, only dress 8 guys, and collect about $9,300 a man.
You could do a lot of damage in State College on a Friday night with $9,000 (with free hotel rooms to boot).
We are now Pittsburgh Polytechnic College, and try outs for the basketball team are being scheduled.

My Idea
I know this does not sound that appealing, but I really believe the next logical step is moving up from low-major to mid-major. Start scheduling 1 and 1’s with MAC and A-10 teams like Buffalo, Miami (OH), Duquense, URI, LaSalle, St. Joe’s, etc.
The athletic apartment would not make as much money for these 2 seasons, but hopefully the dividens would pay off in a few years. This is a process guys, it’s not a quick fix.
Just because we had a good season does not mean the big guys will automatically want to play us. We are in a bad situation because they do not know if this was a fluke or if we will be good again. Like us, they don’t want to a turn a game they thought would help their SOS into a RPI killed.
by STU Boy on Mar 17, 2009 10:28 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
My guesses
Iowa State, Colorado, Seton Hall, or South Florida.
by Cairo on Mar 17, 2009 11:26 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
So 3 more RPI killers?
Everyone except for Seton Hall sucks and would put us in the same situation. If they follow your prediction there is a problem with Ed.

If we're picking four
I’d take two road games at any combination of Maryland, Louisville, Pitt, or Vandy, and start two H/H series picking from the group of Siena, ODU, Cornell, or LaSalle.

by Run Up The Score on Mar 17, 2009 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can't see it
I just can not believe that Louisville or Pitt would take us in a road game. Pitt is more believable, but it still could be a lose-lose situation for Jamie Dixon. We could have a down year so if they beat us it does nothing, or we could upset them. I just can’t see as us an appealing option for a 1 and done game with the big boys.
Could you also realistically believe that Ed and Curley would accept a one and done with mid-level BCS teams like Vandy or Nebraska? It’s a tough situation we are in.
by STU Boy on Mar 17, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why should that matter?
Pitt loses to crappy teams on the road all the time and still makes it to a #1 seed in the tournament.
by AdamShell on Mar 17, 2009 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Umm
They lost 0 conference games this year (worse one to Providence).
They lost only 1 non-conference game last year (at Dayton).
They lost 2 non-conference games in 06-07 (at Wisconsin and home in OT to OK State).
I don’t consider those any crappy losses. And again, I hate Pitt but it really would not make sense for them to play us until we are consistently good. They don’t need to because they are in the Big East and usually play 2-4 very good non-conference games on top of that.
by STU Boy on Mar 17, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ok
but what’s one more to Penn State?
and we’re not crappy, but not quite… #1 in the tournament yet either
by AdamShell on Mar 17, 2009 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My question
What does playing us do for Pitt logically?
by STU Boy on Mar 17, 2009 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Guy...guys...
It will be a cold day in hell before Pitt shows up at the Bryce Jordan Center to play basketball against us unless/until we agree to their terms in football.
That’s the answer. Not playing Pitt. At all.

My schedule breakdown
Every year we should have two home/home series with middle of the road teams from a major conference like the Big East, ACC, or Big XII. These H/H should be alternated so we get one home and one away game every year. The B10/ACC challenge does not count toward this giving us three games from a “power” conference.
Then we should to after three or four decent mid major teams from the MAC and Atlantic 10. These are your Buffalo’s, Akron’s and Temples. Temple needs to be on the schedule every year.
Take three “guarantee” games with whoever you want, and then fill out the rest with average mid-major programs. If one or two of them turn out pretty good it could be a huge RPI boost.
