Bowden apparently thinks cheating is no big deal

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3995384

likens it to only going 5 MPH over the speed limit, opposed to going 50 MPH over.  Says that penalties are like "killing a flea with a hammer".

I guess it comes as some big surprise to him that a MAJOR cheating scandal at his university, in which dozens of athletes (including many of his own football players) were involved, would draw significant penalties from the NCAA.  I mean it is almost like the NCAA think they are an organization representing some sort of institutions where learning is encouraged and academic fraud is frowned upon.  Odd...

Its funny

Can any of you imagine Paterno’s reaction if players from 10 sports teams and up to 24 of his own players were involved in such a cheating scandal?

have you ever tried to kill a flea?

those stinkers are resilient. and remember, it’s the fleas that carried the plague.

well I imagine it is actually pretty hard to kill a flea with a hammer

so perhaps he is implying that the NCAA sanctions will be mostly ineffective to curb rampant cheating (there’s rarely just one flea) at FSU

Bowden's going to fight like hell for that record

It’s like a morality analogy: Joe does things right his entire life, works hard, and earns achievements and recognition for his hard work. Bob does things the easy way, cheats, and ends up getting screwed out of an achievement he didn’t earn anyway.

Mark my words, Bobby will take this to court, he’ll appeal, he’ll counter-sue, he’ll tie it up and fight it as long as he can. Then in a year’s time we still won’t have a clear resolution to this issue, and Bobby may even squeak a victory or two out over Joe and retire as the winningest head coach. He’ll make a big deal about it, have an ESPN special broadcast, and demand all the glory and recognition. Soon after the NCAA resolution will be handed down, Bobby will be de-throned, and Joe will add another season’s worth of wins before retiring. Joe will refuse any special recognition or ceremony, and one will be given anyway where he reluctantly attends.

And when he's 90 and can't get out of his wheelchair

Bowden will still be doing interviews on ESPN talking about how bad he got screwed.

For example........

I had an SEC homer IM me the other day with a link to the PJ Hill DUI article commenting on something like “another fine Big 10 product”. Today it comes out that more than likely Donte Stallworth was drunk (more appropriately stated………over the limit, might not have been DRUNK in the sense I think of being drunk) when he ran over the guy the other morning.

Unfortunately, show me a big time program that doesn’t have somebody getting in trouble.

um...2 things

1) we are judged
2) Paterno kicked people off the team for those incidents, while Bowden is defending his side of the situation basically saying, “they didn’t really do anything that bad” when it is pretty clear how the NCAA views this kind of infraction.

by The JuggerNitt on Mar 20, 2009 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Right......

we are judged because we (and the media) have always sort of bragged about 1) Never having a major NCAA violation 2) Graduation rates 3) Not have players consistently in the police blotter. Stonewall435 is right. The days where PSU can get away with pointing fingers is over with.

One thing I have learned in life is nothing is on the inside as it seems on the outside. I used to be a Bowden / FSU hater myself. But then it dawned on me….if one of my idols (Paterno) doesn’t have an issue with the guy………then why the hell should I ?

Paterno borderline justified that FSU guy raping that girl a few years ago, because as he said……..a young pretty girl shows up and knocks on your door……ehhhhhhhhh……I don’t know that doing that was much more acceptable than Bowden minimizing the cheating scandle. But I am sure we all had our own justifications for rationalizing Paterno’s comments. Do the same for Bowden, or you are not being fair.

Anyhow, point being……I certainly don’t think Bowden deserves to be mention along side of Paterno. However, I think PSU fans are better served these days just taking care of their own business and not worrying or commenting too much on what other schools and their players are doing.

Having said all of that. Here’s to Odricks “incident” being the only off field issue we have this year.

Fuzzy Math

Only in the NCAA is Aggravated Assault less serious than cheating on some bullshit final exam.

I would have to assume so

Seeing as there are no instituional related penalites as a result of all our off the field incidents. Hell even the NFL reserves the right to fine teams that have players that continually get in to trouble. The NCAA stays completely out of it though. But cheat on a Internet Music Final and they’ll send you to the gas chamber.

The other angle is that this is from the same news agency that created that rather butchered OTL piece.

Bowden's Last Leg

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure that the restructured Jimbo Fisher contract has an automatic penalty if he IS NOT the head coach in the 2010 season. That means that, unless FSU wants to spend upwards of 3 million (not sure on the exact amount), this is Bowden’s last season. Thus, to go out on top, he would need a fantastic season and overtake Joe and hope that Joe leaves as well. What he doesn’t realize is that DC17 is better than Pretty Boy Floyd over at FSU and this PSU team, while they lost some talent, will continue the strength well into the teens (as the did in aught 5 and aught 8).

by Jeff Junstrom on Mar 19, 2009 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

True.....BUT

whose to say Bowden is done coaching if this is his last year at Florida State? The Seminoles brass could force him to leave, but there’s nothing stopping him from taking another job at another university to continue his pursuit of the record.

Unlikely, yes. But not implausible.

Wouldn't this all be better

If Bowden and Paterno would say that they DO care about the record. No one believes them anyway.

by STU Boy on Mar 20, 2009 11:08 AM EDT reply actions

Here is the problem with that...

IF either one of them outright admits to caring about the record, then the media, and talking heads will be calling into question their motives in everything they do, right now they have plausible denial. “I still enjoy the game”, or “I can make an impact on these guys lives” sounds alot better in the long run than “I want that daggum record”….

Very few people realize the public image that a football coach has to maintain in order to keep the respect of his players and fanbase. Saying you are doing something to promote your own record would really turn alot of people off, and I don’t think either one wants to do that. All it takes is a few guys in the locker room to start questioning the coaches motives to start a rift that can tear the most talented team apart (see 97). Joe and Bobby do not need to instigate anything that can be construed into something of that sort.

Also...

I have meet with and spoke to many successful football coaches in the past three years, my old college coach was a former NFL coach, and I have taken one thing away from all of them…you have to be a bit egotistical to be successful. Butch Davis himself told me if you want to be successful in this(coaching) buisness you have to have an ego. Joe is no different, Bobby is no different, what makes them different is how they lock away that egotism, and hide it behind a facade, Joe with his elderly statesman, and “enlightned” looking at the big picture for the betterment of young men, and Bobby with his down home charm. But under that there are two men who are serious about winning games, and care about that record, but they would destroy their image and legacies if they came out and admited to wanting the record. Then they become selfish men holding programs hostage….I think that was an accusation flung at joe on here before.

Yeah you're right

Everything you say is true, but I wish they could say it without getting their motives questioned. It’s so fickled, because everyone knows they care but they can’t admit it, which puts us here.

by STU Boy on Mar 20, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

My question.......

is how much do they care ? I think as 20, 30, and 40 year old males we don’t have the same perspective as a guy in his late 70s. I am sure its important to them, but the media and fans from other schools act like these two are staying up nights trying to come up with ways to outfox one another to get the record. I don’ t think its why they are still coaching.

I can agree with you to an extent

but to say we don’t have perspective is absurd, a coach is a coach they all have the same drive and the same need to win…some will go to diffrent measures to achieve it, but in the end they all want to win.

I believe, and once again this the opinion of a football coach, that it is a PART of why they are still coaching. I don’t doubt Joe or to a lesser extent Bobby, when they say that they still feel like they can influence their players, and make a positive impact on their lives not only on the football field but off it as well. I still think Joe finds pleasure in the routines of his life, I am also sure he is getting frustrated at what he is now unable to control because of his age. But I also think they care about the record, and will continue to press on and go for it. Kind of the reason to get up out of bed in the morning….Bowden has already alluded to the fact that he keeps tabs on what Joe is up to in an interview this offseason. I am sure if Joe wasn’t so private and kept the media at arms length he would make comments to the same extent.

I retyped this......

response several times for a variety of reasons, but in a nutshell I would say that its absurd to think that because a guy is a football coach that he has the same perspective on things as somebody 30, 40, or 50 years his Jr. Based on my experience, that isn’t how life works. Its why we have the cliche, if I only knew then what I know now.

I just get tired of people talking about this record. Its kind of like the Seinfeld bit about McDonald’s putting 6 Billion People Served………alright already we get it…….you’ve sold a lot of hamburgers.

The constant talking about the record makes them both look bad even though they themselves don’t really indulge the media regarding the record. I just know that personally, I could not care less about certain things I have achieved in my life and 10 years ago I would have felt differently about the prospect of those achievements. I know I am projecting, but I think the analogy holds.
