Around SBN: FSU To Big 12 'Inevitable,' According To Report

[Jeff McLane, I mean:]

The athletic department sent out a release on Monday that spring practice would kick off Wednesday with media availability of coach Joe Paterno and selected players. A few reporters, however, received a heads up that this could be canceled if the basketball team won at Florida in last night's NIT quarterfinals. Apparently, coach Joe Paterno didn't want to upstage the hoops squad (It's the NIT, Joe!).
[...]
I don't expect my readers to shed a tear, but if you were expecting a story in tomorrow's paper, don't. The NIT semis, by the way, are on Tuesday. I don't know how today would have stomped on the basketball team's parade. Again, it's the NIT!

[It probably would have been fine to just do the whole media thing, but I still like the move. -KHD ]

very cool move by paterno

very classy!

when i was on campus, there were a lot of complaints that everything was about the football team and none of the other sports mattered. so it’s awesome to see the king of college football give respect like this to another sport!

very much agree

I understand McLane’s angle, but he has six months to get the scoop on the depth chart, no reason we can’t wait a week for Paterno non-answers and other likeminded fluff.

Who cares

We can have the press conference without Joe. Here is what he would say…

Why are you asking me about the offensive line? How am I supposed to know what the starting line will look like? I’m not trying to be a smart Alec here. I haven’t seen them yet.

I don’t know if we’re going to be any good. We just started. I think we have a heck of a lot of work to do, and Akron is going to come in here and give us a heck of a game.

You guys write about that. I don’t care about that stuff.

Why do we even have this thing? It’s only the first day.

More

The leg is ok. Doctor says I should take it easy and not kick any more balls in practice. He didn’t say anything about kicking Quarless in the rear though. And he didn’t say anything about kicking David Jones outta here either.

by BSD on Mar 25, 2009 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

And the whole bit

it is an all encompassing saying he throws in at the end to say that he actually doesn’t remember the question and furthermore doesn’t give a crap what it was.

This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope.

Don't the guys at BHGP

have press conferences without Joe all the time anyway?

Meh.

The next meaningful Joe Paterno press conference will be the first.

That reporter is a jerk.

Let the ballers have their day!! They are a great team and need to be supported.

McLane

Probably had to write an article, with this story had nothing else to write, so went with some made up story about how the NIT sucks.

This is why newspapers rule, they make you fill space, and if you have nothing important for the space you write some nonsensical BS story.

by STU Boy on Mar 25, 2009 2:43 PM EDT reply actions

Did he cross-post this from his LiveJournal?

In tomorrow’s article, Jeff informs us of the results from the “What Disney Character are You?” quiz he takes today…

C'mon guys

Go easy on Jeff. He posted his thoughts on his BLOG. That’s what bloggers do. He’s obviously a little frustrated because he was looking forward to having some new material and it was taken away from him for a reason he can’t comprehend. He’s the football beat writer for the Inquirer. He’s not paid to write about PSU basketball.

by BSD on Mar 25, 2009 3:10 PM EDT reply actions

I actually think he does a decent job

But it just sucks that these guys are forced to write stories sometimes when the obviously have no story to write about. This leads to all those repeats about JoePa is old, Big 10 is slow, etc.

When there is a slow news day, BSD can take it easy and not worry about filling the space in the news hole. This is one obvious advantage the internet has over newspapers.

by STU Boy on Mar 25, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

In a way I feel bad for the guy

His editor probably told him to write stories for Thursday and Friday knowing PSU was going to have media day today. So Jeff works hard and prepares some story lines and questions he wants to ask the players and coaches today. But the presser gets cancelled, and now he has no material but he still has to put out two stories this week.

by BSD on Mar 25, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Blah

He coulda easily just thrown out a few negatives for the cancellation and then turned the story into a positive spin on talking about the success in the NIT.

effort

thing is, that would require effort. That might require, looking up our Bball players’ names, stats, and trying to do a write up on the game that we all know he didn’t watch. That’s like, way hard man.

One thing's for sure

He’s gotten more hits because of this piece.

What do you think the odds are that Bobby would’ve done the same thing in this situation? Zero? Less than zero?

It’s a classy piece that another blogger could not resist creating some drama around. Jeez. I will NOT click the link and contribute to the traffic. My one and only news source now is BHD and official Penn State sites.

Aw

I like Jeff McLane, he makes more sense than most of the paid professional PSU beat writers. He gets a pass for this one.

by kmblue on Mar 25, 2009 8:25 PM EDT reply actions

I'm with you.

And I don’t particularly blame him for being frustrated, even if his blog post came across as rather whiny.

The frustration, in a work-related sense, is understandable

Slamming the basketball program and belittling its accomplishments in the process is unacceptable.

D-bag

This is an example of whiner trying to stir the pot. Executed well d-bag. He tells us the NIT is worthless and PSU b-ball sucks (paraphrasing) but let’s get to the HUGE EVENTFUL presser of Joe ‘umming’ and ‘ahhing’ and saying less than nothing about football. Jeff would have made it his column of the year as he is so talented.

I think that may be a little harsh

He isn’t known the be a whiner, he is actually a fairly solid writer. I read him almost every day while eating breakfast during the season and I think he does a decent job.
