Battle
When my friend and I stormed the court, I was wondering how all of the players got out of the chaos. I guess the answer was any way the f-ing could.

Haha
Pringle walked off by going up through the concourse.

You were the guy who knocked him over were you?
Just kidding. That was chaotic though.

haha
No, I never saw a player on the court, it took me about two minutes just to get to the floor during the chaos.

lol, it has already been determined
that the guy from Crispen & Cream was the guy that knocked Battle over. Wonder if Battle will take a little visit to his blog now :-p nothing like publicity

Battle
He went up into the stand to talk to Deon Butler. Happened at the end of my row.
Side note-it was great to see Clark, Lee, Hull, Butler, etc. supporting the team last night.
Side note to the side note-did anyone happen to see Josh Hull’s hat?

Thank you.
Mortified to find out it wasn’t on BTN but on ESPN after it occurred. I don’t get BTN nor do I get ESPN360 on my cable.
Awesome moment.

From the stands
That ball took FOREVER to go in, you could feel the air leave the place. It felt like it bounced about ten times before it went in.
by dawsonPSU10 on Mar 6, 2009 12:49 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
it did take forever to go in
I know I’m exaggerating a bit, but it seemed like a full second came off the clock while it bounced around. Only left Illinois with 0.3 to try something to come back.
by The JuggerNitt on Mar 6, 2009 2:36 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Battle did that on purpose...
so Illinois wouldn’t have enough time afterwards.
by jimbo2psu on Mar 6, 2009 8:56 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Watched the second half
throughout the announcers continuously talking about the “experience” of the Illinois backcourt vs the “inexperience” of Battle was the difference of the game.
I guess Battle’s inability to get that ball to bounce aound the rim for another .3 seconds just proves their point.

You can even see it in the highlights- the collective breath of the building stops for a beat, then the ball drops and everything explodes. Honestly, I never thought I’d see us on the front page of ESPN for basketball…and not for losing. Wow.

Hell of a finish
I think Penn State’s probably safe now (especially with all the carnage on the bubble yesterday), but one more win (either over Iowa or in the Big Ten tourney) would probably guarantee it.
by SpartanDan on Mar 6, 2009 2:12 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I have never
Seen a team be so ugly and then so beautiful. When Battle went down the court when we were down 2 and lost the ball I just thought of the first MSU game this year. Somehow we pull it out, I know the term “cardiac kids” is thrown about a whole ton, but this team makes me hate them, then love them, almost call 911, then cheer and jump around like the football team just won the MNC or like when my Phils won the WS. They have some kind of magical quality about them that makes me feel no matter how bad we play we are never out of it. It simply can’t be explained away by saying that the other team had their bad/worst night., its happened too much. I whole heartedly think another sweet 16 run and or deep big11 tourney run are in order, I certainly would not be shocked.
Also, it feels so so so so so good to see PSU basketball being discussed on ESPN and other national media, a pic of Battle is the main headline on espn.com right now. Never thought I’d see it. Also the crowd energy proves that the PSU community will indeed get behind a team that is worthy of it and this team certainly is.

Sorry, yet another thing.
There is a very possible chance we will end up #2 in the conference tourney, we beat Iowa, MSU beats Purdue, that is not a lock but very very possible. wow, just wow
by Roland86 on Mar 6, 2009 3:02 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
is that all that really has to happen?
because that is probably about 50:50 odds
by The JuggerNitt on Mar 6, 2009 3:06 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, that's all that needs to happen
If Purdue loses to MSU and we beat Iowa then PSU, Purdue, and Illinois will all finish tied for 2nd and because Illinois beat Purdue twice but lost to us twice the tiebreaker goes to PSU, at least that’s what I’ve read.
Record head to head between the 3 teams:
PSU: 3-1
Ill: 2-2
Pur: 1-3
by RNF18 on Mar 6, 2009 9:13 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think I heard that it goes to the best overall winning %… which I think in this case goes to Purdue, right?
by Bstoner52 on Mar 6, 2009 9:49 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Close
It’s based off of winning percentage of the head-to-head of all teams tied: Tourney Tiebreakers.
Section 30. Seeding Participants I. Teams shall be seeded No. 1 through No. 11 in the tournament bracket based on the final regular-season Conference standings.
II. A team’s seed shall correspond to its regular-season finish (i.e., the champion shall be the No. 1 seed, the runner-up the No. 2 seed, etc.).
III. Teams that finished Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in the regular-season shall receive a “bye” on the first day.
IV. In case of a tie for any place finish in the regular-season standings, the following tie-breaking procedure shall be followed in order to seed teams in the tournament bracket:
…
B. Multiple team tie:
1. Results of head-to-head competition during the regular-season.
a. When comparing records against the tied teams, the team with the higher winning percentage shall prevail, even if the number of games played against the team or group are unequal (i.e., 2-0 is better than 3-1, but 2-0 is not better than 1-0).
b. After the top team among the tied teams is determined, the second team is ranked by its record among the original tied teams, not the head-to-head record vs. the remaining team(s). …
So the first tiebreaker is results from head to head of all three teams involved – RNF broke that down, and it would mean we would jump to #2. Overall winning % doesn’t come in until the 3rd tiebreaker (after the head-to-head against each individual team in the conference has been compared).

It's True
“They have some kind of magical quality about them that makes me feel no matter how bad we play we are never out of it. It simply can’t be explained away by saying that the other team had their bad/worst night., its happened too much.”
I might be disillusioned, BUT I whole heatedly think another sweet 16 run and or deep big11 tourney run are in order, I certainly would not be shocked, by one or the other!!!
Also, yes it is very important that a base get behind a basketball team. I would have (given the chance to) loved to have been there tonight in the BJC. but alas…basketball thsn’s THAT big of a deal doesn’t come around that often…forgive me Cornley.

Damn it, I'm on a roll here
Is the “It’s gonna fall in!” going to go down in PSU annals next to “NO FLAGS, NO FLAGS, NO FLAGS” It kinda remined me of it.
Sidenote:, interesting that Lavin was the announcer because I always used to like UCLA basketball and when he was fired I wanted him to be our new coach real bad.
by Roland86 on Mar 6, 2009 3:06 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
So the gameball goes to...
Stanley Pringle: 20 points, including some pretty key 3’s at the end
or
Talor Battle: “It’s Gonna Fall In!” (need I say more?), as well as the previous 2 FT’s, and a total of 15 points.
This post needs a poll (though perhaps that is gonna come in the “formal” game recap)

Great finish
Obviously, but it was to battle back (no pun intended) after some blown calls (I’d have to look a the first call again; 2nd call was obvious SC violation) and some sloppy play the last few minutes.

both were bad calls
but they happen, it was just tough to watch because they were back-to-back.

There was a 4 point swing
On the goaltending and shotclock violation missed calls, so we should/could have been leading, but I dont care now because we won and its over.
Also i think I might actually like us to be behind late rather than have a lead, is it just me or is this team better at making a late push than defending a late lead?

I can't stop thinking about it
Walking into the BJC last night reminded me of walking into the Beav for a big night game. The students had packed the place and were doing cheers. There was an electricity that I’ve never felt in that place. Illinois did a great job of keeping the crowd out of the game for 36 minutes. We’d hit a shot and get loud, then they’d answer. We’d play strong defense and they’d nail a shot with the shot clock winding down.
So many plays down the stretch are going to stay with me. Morissey hitting his 3 free throws, Pringle’s three in the corner, DJ drawing a big foul, the two big rebounds down the stretch, and that ball sitting on the back of the iron for what seemed like forever. It feels like the day after a big football win when I’m watching every highlight I can and running all the big plays through my head.
This was bigger than big. What this program needs more than anything is support. To pull off a win like that, in that fashion, with that crowd was major. I was as critical of the hoops program as anyone, and I’m fully on the bandwagon right now.

great win for the team
That video is great stuff and I don’t know how many more times I’m going to watch it but I know I’m going to enjoy it every time.
Hopefully they can keep the momentum going for 1 last B11 win and then 2 deep tourney runs. Is the Iowa game on BTN? I’m going to be in Columbus over the weekend and may have to head to a sports bar to catch it. Like I need another reason to head to the bar at 2 in the afternoon.

12-15 v 2-7 at the stripe
It sure is nice to see the guys win a game at the line tonight instead of throwing away opportunities. I know Battle hit the game winner but he would have never had the opportunity if we didn’t take care of business at the line.
The next test is to see whether or not this team can maintain their intensity and win a game that will be tough on the road but a game that they should win nontheless! I’m hopeful this team shows maturity and wins at Iowa!

Iowa
Will no doubt be a tough game. They are tough at home, just ask Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio State (yes OSU won but barely).

The Iowa game scares me big time
Iowa has been almost all of their games this year and all of their conference wins are at home this year. Our guys tend to play to the level of our competition. I don’t know that I’ve seen our players control a game yet. We played down to lower teams and we’ve played up for better teams. Unfortunately I think this one’s going to be a nail-biter and I’m normally very optimistic but I have a bad feeling about the game at Iowa. I hope my gut is as confused about this one as it was when the football team went to Iowa. I don’t think I ever felt as confident about a game as I did before we headed into Iowa.
by RNF18 on Mar 6, 2009 10:48 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Fortunately...
…the weather forecast inside the stadium is good. Limited chance that wind will affect Battle’s shots. There’s a definite possibility of a letdown, but I would think this team would perform extremely well in the Big Ten tourney if their NCAA berth depended on it.
by Cairo on Mar 6, 2009 10:59 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I know someone else has already pointed this out, but..
isn’t it a little ominous that we play at Iowa, after the biggest game of our season, in a game that can still possibly break our season. And you just know that BHGP is going to have some shit to talk if they beat us.
by The JuggerNitt on Mar 6, 2009 9:59 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I really think we are in
With all these bubble teams collapsing, I really believe that we clinched a spot unless every tournament is won by an undeserving team. 6-9 vs the top 50 is something no other team has on the resume.
by STU Boy on Mar 6, 2009 10:09 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree that we're like 90% in
but just imagine if we go to Iowa, and play such a shitty game that we get left out. I just can’t count out things like that when going to Iowa. I hate Iowa. Cows, and shit, you know…

I almost went to bed disgusted about 10 different times
Got to the point where we could never get back closer than 5 or 7 and I was thinking “F*CK THIS! I’m going to bed. They’ll never win” But in the back of my mind, I kept thinking, “but if they come back to win, I don’t want to miss it”. So I stayed up, and I am SOOOO glad I did.
95% of that game was ugly on our behalf, but the 5% that was beautiful came at all the right times. This team has a way of ending the game on big runs, which is essential for winning in the tourney. Now we just have to hope Cornley stays healthy enough to be a factor. Any word on him yet?

This is why you set your DVR before you go to bed to tape the rest of the game. That way if you wake up and find out they won you can go back and watch it.

A great moment to be at!
I was there, with Sean Lee sitting 2 rows up from me. I was jokingly saying to everyone in the row, “If we win on a buzzer beater, we’re rushing the court.” Well that is about as close as you can get, and I was ready to go down there. On a side note, never have I smelt so much B.O. in my life. I’m surprised everyone made it out alive, the funk could have taken out a horse.
Then I immediately ran over to see the Watchmen at midnight, completely hoarse and all. Great movie, 9/10 for those that have read the graphic novel, probably a little less for those with no frame of reference.
