Pitt Plays Spring Game, Local Paper Gives Not One Crap

Looking for information about the Pitt spring football game, which was played early Saturday afternoon?  Better head over to their Scout.com site, because you can't find any trace of the game on the website of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as of 11:00 p.m.  Not on their front page, their sports page (the Pirates' manager has gout in his elbow!), not even on their dedicated Pitt page.  Not even a trace of it -- a photo, a score.  Nothin'.

Not such a surprise, I suppose.  Considering the presence of the Steelers, Penguins, Pirates, Riverhounds, Xplosion, Pitt's basketball team, and the Steel City Derby Demons, there aren't a lot of fans left for poor Dave Wannstedt.

Boom, Roasted

I guess that Western PA wall that Wanny built keeps out all the reporters, too.

Classic quote!

“Pitt held its annual Blue-Gold game yesterday and judging by the results the Panthers’ offense picked up right where it left off at the Sun Bowl in December.

And that’s not a good thing."

What's funny

is that Shayne Hale is playing DE already for Pitt. JoePa is right again, and the Stache is a liar, again.

So I’m guessing the majority of the population was hobos looking to get out of the cold for a while.

Well, in their defense

the Steel City Derby Demons have about the same number of fans at Pitt football, judging from this photo.

I count about 23 fans. Roughly the same as Pitt homecoming.

That's sad.

I think can we pretty much take Pitt off the list of schools that can potentially swipe Paul Jones from us.

Two. That’s how many pictures the only newspaper that cares took of the entire game. Two.

FACT

Dave Wannstedt’s stache counts as 2 fans. So the attendance count should be 6,162.

I blame Iowa.

It was actually on TV

By chance I was flipping around yesterday and caught five seconds (they were going to commercial). It was on the CW here in State College, which is a tribute to the fine programming of the CW.

Oh, btw

Their running back was going to the draft wasn’t he? Has anyone heard anything about him, because I haven’t heard his name mentioned once. In fact I had completely forgotten about him.

by dawsonPSU10 on Apr 12, 2009 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

unreal

No way this is true. 2 of those 5 players are from the big ten and only 1 from the SEC. And where’s Tim Tebow? TEBOW SMASH

I blame Iowa.

by raimman on Apr 12, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

It's weird

I never heard a word about him from the combine, granted they were always drooling over Wells and Moreno. Then again, when you humiliate yourself and your entire team to a 3-0 loss, you either want the anonymity, or your draft stock just nosedived.

Pitt

This “program” is officially a joke. Laugh now at this recent news, but never forget:

1) Yellow Outs in a rented stadium.
2) 3-0 bowl loss against a team without its best players.
3) An NFL reject as a head coach.
4) One 9-win season in 25 years.
5) The “wall” around Western PA.
6) Persistent mediocrity in a persistently mediocre (at best) conference.
7) One BCS game, gift-wrapped by the epic sucktitude of the rest of the Big Easy. Oh, they lost by 4 TD’s to a mid-major (albeit a good mid-major).
8) The need to define themselves through “12-0.” Congrats, your most memorable moment barely occurred this century, when we were at our worst.

The only real question is whether Pitt is the Temple of the West, or Temple is the Pitt of the East…

What's all the fuss about?

Looks to me like Pitt drew just as much interest for its Spring Game as it does for regular season games. The amount of yellow seats would appear to be equivalent.

We’ll see if Penn State can pull off such a feat!!
Generating as much interest for a scrimmage as it does a mid-fall conference tilt?! I’ll bet you not! Pitt fans are passionate about their squad! Rain, sun, spring or fall.

Sarcasm aside, I would love to meet a player that turns down Penn State in favor of Pitt (assuming playing time potential is equal. Not the “I chose Pitt because I’ll start there, and I didn’t want to be 4th string at PSU” guy.)
There is no way any rational human would choose the wasteland of irrelevancy that is Pitt football when other options exist.

by NittanyBadger on Apr 13, 2009 10:29 AM EDT reply actions

well remember when Anthony Morelli chose Pitt over Penn State

sure, we thought it was a huge loss for us at the time, but when Daryll Clark was able to start early during the 2006-2007 seasons it really gave him the extra experience boost he needed, so once the 2008 season came around he had that extra boost to keep his confidence up. Then when he suffered the concussion in the OSU game in 2008 he approached the coaches and told them that he was worried he won’t be able to perform at his best in the Iowa game, and asked them to pull him if he looked less than effective. When that came true, the coaches put in Pat Devlin, who led us to a 35-22 victory over the Hawkeyes. Clark was then able to come back for the Indiana game, lead us to a decisive victory, followed by a blowout of the Spartans on Senior Day.

Being the only undefeated team in the country we were a solid #1, and were chosen to go to the MNC game, despite protests by the OMG ESS EEE CEE and the offensive (in both ways) juggernauts of the Big XII. After much whining again, Urban Meyer was able to get his Gators into the MNC game, where they proved that they really did deserve to be there as the #2 team in the nation, giving the Nitts a run for their money. Daryll Clark’s veteran leadership was too much to overcome, though, and Penn State was able to drive down the field in the last 2 minutes of the game to seal the win, 27-21

All that, just because a blue chip QB picked Pitt over Penn State. So yeah, sometimes things turn out for the best, even when you lose a recruit to Pitt.

It seems its finally catching up to the Stash

Since he took over at Pitt, he’s actually recruited quite well, but they’ve yet to actually show it on the field. With the recruits he’s gotten Pitt should be the class of the Big East, but they haven’t even had a whiff of a conference championship let alone a MNC. They’ve been pretty regularly outperformed on the field by WVU, Louisville, Rutgers, Uconn, Cincinnati and USF. So, I guess if your a Blue chip Prep Star and want to ruin any pro potential that you have, I guess Pitt would be a good choice.

You know what is insane?

Like cartoon character crazy?

90,000 people at a spring game. It’s a lot of things, fun, a sign that the program is strong, great for recruiting, and crazy. Simply crazy.

Anyway, I’m thinking about starting at the Rathskellar at 11:00, hitting the Phyrst as soon as it opens than wandering down to Hooters, where I’ll watch the first half with wings, and the second half from the stands. Who’s in?

Are they playing a baseball game afterwards?

There sure is

a lot of commentary on this board that turns up about a program that the commenters supposedly don’t care about and/or think is on a lower plane of existence.

Our performance in our bowl game wasn’t any better than Pitt’s. They were one play away from winning the game, we weren’t. Nobody in the glass house of the Big 10 should be throwing stones at any other football program, at least in terms of on-field football.

It’s OK for all of you to admit you’d rather see Pitt on the schedule than Coastal Carolina.

by ReadingRambler on Apr 14, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

while that is technically true

about them being 1 play away from winning the game, we were really only about 2 plays away from winning (and there were about 5 good opportunities for those plays to happen, but just didn’t).

The biggest difference, though, is we were playing one of the top 2 or 3 (and possibly even the best) teams in the country, while Pitt was not.

We were playing without our starting RB (and even lost our backup RB).

Pitt’s opponent (OrSt) was missing their top 2 players.

And yes, I would much rather see Pitt than any 1-AA school (but I’d be worried about making our schedule any weaker….ZING!!!)

I wonder if “one play away” qualifies for a banner in the endzone these days :-P

Excuses.

38-14 with 12 minutes left, -→ More than 2 plays.

by Joe 96alum on Apr 14, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I was going more along the lines of

if Green’s long run wasn’t called back = 1 play that would have given us a VERY good opportunity at scoring
if we didn’t leave their 1 reciever WIDE open = 1 play

There were obviously other plays I could choose from as well, but those are 2 that stick out in memory. Heck, if Royster doesn’t get injured on the first drive that could have dramatically changed the game for us.

All I'm saying

is our bowl performance was nothing to be proud of either. Bowls, on paper, have pretty evenly matched teams, the games are supposed to be competitive.

by Joe 96alum on Apr 14, 2009 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

To me

The major difference is that PSU actually scored some freaking points on a defense that was filled with NFL picks. Pitt couldn’t muster a FG against Oregon State.

Kath?

by psuphiman80 on Apr 15, 2009 10:03 AM EDT reply actions

The major difference

is that we “embarassed ourselves” in front of 100,000 people in the stands and the second largest television audience of any game that season.

Pitt lost on in a game that I didn’t recognize was on until I saw it on the TV at the Beer Distributor. I live in Pittsburgh, and I follow Pitt.

Finally, we did not embarass ourselves. We lost to a better team. That happens. It’s what should happen. I was proud of the way our team played that day. Obviously I was disappointed that they didn’t do better. But they played four quarters of football in a game they could have quit on. That would have been embarassing. Such as it was it was simply a loss. Shit happens.
