Harry Kalas has passed away
He apparently died in the booth prior to today's 3pm start. I can't believe he's gone. I know this is a Penn State site but so many of us are Phillies fans and even if you're not a Phillies fan, Harry's popularity went beyond Philly. His voice was unmistakable and his presence will be missed. I actually had to hold back a tear when I heard the news.
Maybe we could recall our favorite Harry Kalas call or story below?

RIP Harry
It’s going to be weird watching the phils w/o hearing his voice. I’m only 26 now but it always reminds me of a sunny, summer day as a kid.
So sad.
And to make it semi-BSD related, he was a graduate of…the University of Iowa.

another PSU tie-in
His partner in the booth Chris Wheeler is a proud Penn State alum who regularly wears PSU gear in the booth during broadcasts.
wow
What a joke and people say Philly fans are heartless
Yeah, bad taste there
Look, I’m not trying to be a douchebag. I was trying to at the very least make light of a situation which required more gravity than that. My heart goes out to his friends and family, which I do guess includes all you assholes Phillies fans. A very big “my bad” on this one.

Extremely bad taste
I don’t care if you’re a Mets fan or not. That post was the most ignorant comment that I’ve seen on this site. A legend just died and you post that crap!? You may not have been trying to be a douchebag but you sure nailed it!
I'm a Braves fan
and over on talkingchop.com (another of our SBNation sites) there are 2 posts for Harry Kalas none ripping into him. Guy was one of the best voices of baseball and you say something stupid like that…. grow the F up man.
This guy is an idiot.
Look at his posts here for example. He even said bad things about the Mets broadcasters. So take him for what he’s worth: a jackass.

He does not represent Met fans.
Sports obviously shouldn’t be part of the fact that this man died. So everyone, leave the stupid Mets choking thing, or “Phuck the Phillies” out of it. Jesus. C’mon, show some class, both of you.

right
I really don’t know how I’ll react to the inevitable jackass remarks whenever JoePa finally passes on. Heck, I didn’t talk to 2 of my best friends for a week after they (only semi-jokingly) called JoePa a crazy old man.

WHAT?!?
Who are they? I want names, damnit!!!!!
by Screen Name 20 on Apr 14, 2009 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions
neither of them went to 1-A schools
so they felt free to pick by “random” teams that are their “favorite”. I swear to god they chose them because of the NCAA football video game, and one chose Texas because they were the best in the game, and the other chose Michigan because he likes their uniforms. I kid you not. They obviously know nothing about college football (though one of them, the one that likes Texas, is pretty big into pro football, so at least watches college games to “scout” draft guys)
I basically have no respect for them whenever it comes to college football discussions. The “Michigan” guy tried to hold the whole “win streak” over me, but it didn’t bother me at all, except that he was being an idiot.

You should point out to the “Michigan” “fan” that Michigan took the most famous part of their uniforms from Princeton.
Then point out that Michigan has never played in a 1 vs. 2 national championship game.
Then point out that Michigan has won only one national title in the last 50 years, and won most of theirs long before this “fan” started riding the bandwagon.
Then link to the video of App. State blocking the field goal.
Also, 46-17. Bitch.

Don't worry Devon...
you’re still young and in college. Plenty of time to grow up and shed the douchebaggery. All is not yet lost.
"You are a tenacious little monkey!"
not a representative of the mets
i can’t believe you call yourself a fan of baseball, let alone the muts.
even my met fans understand what harry the k meant to the sport, and not just to the team.
i hope you get the hyper-aids.

When I was a kid
Hearing Harry say, “Home Run Michael Jack Schmidt” was music to my ears.
And then I became a Mets fan.

Sorry, this may have to be my last post on this site.
Being a Mets fan is like being a Bucknut. Absolutely the worst kind of person.
A mets fan, really? really? say it ain’t so, any team and you pick them? Why?
well, i think i got it out of my system now, best of luck this year, hope the Phils and Mets have an epic showdown in the NLCS! (with the Phils rolling of course)

Yeah I know
I’m not so much a fan in recent years. I liked them back in the 80’s when they won the world series. I saw Game 6 and was hooked. That team with Doc Gooden, Ron Darling, Daryll Strawberry, Keith Hernandez, Mookie Wilson, Ray Knight, and Gary Carter was just awesome.
Then we went through the disasterous 90’s where I had to put up with guys like Bobby Bonilla and Vince Coleman. By the end of the decade I couldn’t stand to watch them any more and pretty much gave up on baseball all together.
But I’ve started casually following them in recent years. I really like David Wright and Jose Reyes. Other than Santana, Delgado, and Beltran I probably couldn’t tell you who else is on the team. I just check the standings maybe once a week.
With my new move to Houston I’m thinking about following the Astros now. I’m already kind of a closet Texans fan after attending an NFL game this past fall. If the Broncos continue sucking I may be shopping for a new NFL team too.

I have his autograph
my Dad took me to a fan even a long, long time ago. I met him, Schmidt (my Mom thought he was hot), Gary Maddox and Greg Luzinski. Dad liked the Bull
It kind of ties into JoePA
The whole mortality thing. Harry K died in the booth, nearly on air. The same may very well happen to Joe. Its a morbid thought, but it is incredibly true, even a healthy 80 yr old can go at anytime, Ive seen it personally.
Enough of the sad stuff
gotta love “Chase Utley, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!” also any Michael Jack Schmidt HR call was just perfection.
Don’t forget his AWESOME NFL work either, all of that old footage with his voice over, can imagine seeing the work without hearing his voice.

He will be missed.
If you are a baseball fan, his voice was always recognizable. No matter who your favorite team was, when you heard his voice on TV you knew what team was playing.
He came to Williamsport in the past few years for the Phillies Caravan and did some public appearances. He was always personable and would always talk baseball with anyone.
It is obvious that he loved his work. Those who worked with him cared deeply for him.
You will be missed by all baseball fans.
Rest in Peace Harry, Rest in Peace.
Settle it on the field!
Joe Paterno statement
Joe Paterno: “Harry did a wonderful job for Philadelphia in everything he did. He was fair in his reporting and enthusiastic about the games he covered. He was a class act, one of the greats in his profession, and will be missed.”
