THEM Recruiting
The fiancee is a UM grad, so after I've exhausted my PSU searches for the day, I like to sprinkle in a little UM research just so I know what to say to irritate her (can't wait for the marriage!). Can someone explain this to me? All stars and research as per Scout.com...
Class of 2009 - Tate Forcier AND Denard Robinson, both four star athletes, both, as of last research, starting QB prospects
Class of 2010 - Devin Gardner, four star athlete, projected starting QB
Now, I know RichRod is the best coach/recruiter/guy in the country, and whatever he does is generally seen as the smartest moves (how we missed out on Greg Robinson, I'll never know), but why would you go out and recruit THREE big name recruits at the same position within two years of each other? What is this guy possibly telling these kids? I understand two in the same year, and I can even understand three inside of three or four years, but where do the two who DON'T get the starting job think they will end up? Delaware? Am I completely missing something?
That being said, I hope Tate wins the job, and GameDay comes to a future PSU/UM game. Those signs would be hilarious...

Don't forget Newsome
he was a verbal commit to Michigan until they kept pursuing other top QB prospects (namely Tate Forcier).
On one hand, if the kids want to come and compete, it is a good system. Good for the program, that is. For the kids, unfortunately, only one of them is going to be able to “shine”, whilst the others will be stuck in backup duty (or by wasting a year of eligibility with transferring).

And I think there will be transfers.
It’s just the nature of things right now, especially at the more visible programs. HS QB’s are seeing what is happening with Tebow, Pryor and so on and want to step in year one. Some have the patience to wait perhaps one year, get the system under the belt and step in year two, but I think the days of a top QB wanting to redshirt, learn the system for three years and then play for 1-2 are over, even though that’s how it was for decades.
RRod is just playing a numbers game…highly rated players bust all the time, so if you bring in three of them you dramatically lower your odds of being stuck with a guy who can’t turn the corner. It sucks for the kids, the ones that are probably being told only the best case scenario by the coaches, but (1) every program is probably doing this to some extent, and (2) with the pressure new coaches are now under it’s not surprising in the least…most of these guys get a three year window do do something special, so if they put all their eggs in one basket and that guy can’t perform in three years it’s see-ya time.

Nick Sheridan
In case you didn’t notice, UM is basically starting from scratch at the QB depth chart. So, kids see a realistic chance to start and play early at a school like that, and they are taking it. Well, at least the confident ones are.
Also, both Gardner and Robinson have position flexibility. Florida wanted Robinson as a receiver or DB, I believe, and Gardner is looked at as a potential WR down the road as well.
Best case scenerio for UM, Forcier wins the job and starts for 4 years while never getting hurt, Robinson moves to corner, and Gardner could potentially have two years to start. Realistically I think Robinson stays at backup QB for at least this year, and may even start.
Once a clear multi-year QB option emerges, I think you’ll see UM settle into more of a “top QB every other year” approach.
I guess it depends on how bad these guys want to play QB, then. Like I said I don’t know enough about them, but are they aware they will probably be playing something other than QB? Or is the ‘position flexibility’ thing just something from the scouts, ie “he’s a good QB but has the build to play WR”?
If they are committed to playing QB and are truly 4-star guys with lots of offers, there are a lot of other schools that can provide a better chance at playing time in years 2-3 rather than years 4-5.

Robinson
I could be wrong but I think UM was the only “top” school to offer him as a QB. In his case, I do think he will stay at QB, and he will see playing time this year. Foricer looks promising so far, but is, um, thinly proportioned. I hope he stays healthy, but wouldn’t be surprised if he misses a game or two. Robinson is one more layer of 4 star buffer before we get to Nick Sheridan and I start stabbing things.
Also, one of the big themes from the new staff is competition making everyone better. I think they are attracting a certain type of kid that like environment, whereas the previous system had a certain air of entitlement. This is a quote from Gardner after annoucing his decision: “I’m a competitor and I think I can beat out anybody. I think I can play with the best of them. Tate (Forcier) is good; I’ve seen him a lot. Denard (Robinson) runs a 10.4 (100 meters). There is going to be competition, but I’m a good player too. They should worry about me as well.”
I hope Michigan turns things around
I really do. We need a third power to join Penn State and Ohio State at the top again. The conference won’t get any respect until we do.
Too bad Michigan rotates off the schedule again in 2012 and 2013. That’s a game that needs to happen every year. RR will probably only get two more cracks at beating JoePa.

Lightning
DickRod is trying to get lightning in a bottle again (see: White, Patrick). He is hoping that someone how he finds another Pat White and can ride him until the next “dream job” comes up.
Not going to happen.
Watching the BigTen Network right now is tough. If i have to here what a “Forcier” Tate Forcier is one more time i’m going to lose it.
PSU Softball
RR runs his system, can you blame
him on trying to stock up on his “type” of QB and putting them in a competition.
Schools like Michigan are the top of the coaching mountain. Where does he go up from there – the NFL. I think his system will only get QB’s killed at the next level.

As an aside...
…in my capacity as a divorce laywer I can tell you that marriage is a pretty sketchy proposition to begin with. Marriage to a Michigan fan is a reciepe for trouble.
I’m only partially kidding.

Inter-marriage
I am in a mixed marriage (UM and PSU). It isn’t as bad as you might think, especially now that PSU finally broke the streak. We try to focus our collective hate on third parties (ND, OSU, etc).
One piece of advice, make sure you both agree as to how you are going to raise any kids. And expect to have the “labor” card thrown back at you in the process.
I'm married to an
overhauled Pitter. After years of therapy, interventions and trips to Beaver stadium I think she actually has erased the Pitt part of her memory and remembers graduating from PSU. She happily supports PSU through NLC donations and sports PSU flair on her car.
All is well.

They suck. Losing to your girlfriend/Wife’s school is trouble.

We were married when the
last PSU/Pitt game was played. So yeah, we’ve experienced that.
