Sounds like me being "kind of" committed to exercise. Take a guess how that's going.

Somebody needs to calmly explain to Paul Jones that there's no "kind of committed" to anything in college football recruiting. You either are, or you're not. And right now, he's not. Perhaps being in the same room this weekend in Happy Valley with four-star QB recruit Robert Bolden will illuminate things.

Or maybe Jones wants to play at Pitt. It's a little closer to home, and he'll almost always have his weekends free.

The weird thing is, Jones still probably ends up at PSU

But he’s not doing himself, the program, or his recruiting class any favors by screwing around like this. If he wants to visit other schools, great! Then guess what, you’re not committed to anyone! It’s too easy to construe this “kind of” stuff as, “okay, hold my place for now, but if something incredible comes along…”

You’re in or you’re out. Can’t be both.

I heard

That Paul Jones doesn’t want to play football after Novemember…and Pitt gives him the best chance to acheive that.

four star recruit Robert Bolden

Is wildly overrated. The white team in that video is awful. He was throwing into double coverage, over throwing recievers, leading them directly out of bounds. His scrambles would have gone nowhere against any sort of decent college defense.

Hey he's got decent offers

Still a lot of time left to evaluate him. A lot of schools see him as a future number 1.

This is why the coaches ask kids to hold off on committing

and asks them to continue to take visits until they’re sure. Clearly Paul jumped the gun. If he still ends up in Happy Valley, great but I agree that he’s no longer a commitment. If you’re playing the field then you can’t be committed. This should be really interesting if the kid from Michigan chooses PSU!

Paul has admitted that PSU has been up front with him about recruiting 2 QBs this year. Unfortunately it doesn’t sound like he was as upfront with them about his feelings. He wasn’t 100% to PSU and that’s fine but don’t commit then. Play the field a little before committing.

This is the stuff that gives me gray hair or at least will give me gray hair someday!

He's also looking at

Vanderbilt, Northwestern and Duke. Interesting. I think we’ll wind up with the kid.

I think you're right.

He’s from a PSU family. He wants to stay close to home, that’s a big thing. So it’s really a Pitt-PSU thing unless someone else semi-local gets involved.

what happened to the 3 hour radius he wanted to stay in?

Last time i checked, Duke, Vanderbilt, and Northwestern were not really that close to Sto-Rox

Offers

That is one strange thing to me. Why doesn’t a 5 star QB have more offers from the elite programs?

by speedomike on Apr 17, 2009 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Databases on sites

are notoriously inaccurate. Plus he committed extremely early. I imagine with his opening up he’ll get a bunch of new offers, but we may never hear about it because they don’t matter.

The only difference it makes to me

Is that I’ve lost any respect for him as a leader. He could have chose to step up, be mature and establish himself as a leader, help recruit, and tow the line for this program.

Now he’s just some 18 year old with some talent who can’t make up his mind.

I’m not saying I don’t want to see him in blue and white, I’m just saying I’m not going to put him on a pedestal b/c he’s failed to step into the role he could have or maybe should have. If he “commits” in a month it won’t be a big deal — he’s already shown he’s incapable of handling the role of a leader right now.

Eric Shrive on the other hand, did all those things that Jones didn’t. He committed early, he stuck by the program, became the leader of his class and a big help in recruiting. Eric Shrive should be put on a pedastal and I can’t wait to get that kid on the field b/c he’s already established himself as a leader.

Nobody belongs on a pedastal

If you put your faith in another person you’re generally setting yourself up for failure. Everyone of us will let somebody down in our lifetime, we’re just built that way. Some let others down more than others. Just sayin.

To start...

He’s a junior in high school, he’s lucky if he is 17 years old. I didn’t get particulary excited when he committed, not upset at his apparent waffling. Picking a college is tough, especially when your friends are all going to one (Pitt), your family is pushing for a second (Penn State) and you have a lot of other really good options (Northwestern, Vanderbilt, BC, Duke, etc.).

I waited till the last second before finally picking a college, and all I was trying to do was find the place that was most likely to get me laid.

Yeah

I can’t beat him up. Maybe he realized he rushed, and wants to visit some schools just to make sure he’s fine with his choice. We really can’t trivalize this process, as it is the next stage of their life for these kids. I’m perfectly fine with kids looking around if they realize they made a decision too hastily.

I’m not faulting him, I just thought he’d take on the role Shrive did when he was committed.

He's not even close to 18.

I don’t think he’s even 17 yet. He still has to play his senior year in high school.

There’s a weird crush of attention for a five-star QB. He and his family need to understand that every word is going to be scrutinized — as ridiculous as that seems — and that “kind of” committed isn’t really committed. I don’t think any sane person is saying, “well, screw him, we don’t want him anyway.”

You shouldn’t be putting any of these kids on a pedestal. They’re freaking high school football players. But we’re forced to pay attention to them because…because. It’s the future of PSU.

Shrive committed in what, mid-May? There’s still plenty of time for Jones to be that kind of recruiter for his class, but not if he’s off visiting other schools this summer.

I mean if he is out visiting other schools he could still recruit for PSU

5 Star propect to Joins: “Hey these girls here are amazing”
Jones: “Man they have nothing compared to the chciks at penn state, hell did you see Kristy in the hottest college challenge?”

by psupride on Apr 17, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Shrive deserves a ton of credit for his efforts and his maturity in handling his recruitment. He stuck to his decision despite a ton of offers and he did a lot for the class by asserting himself as the leader. That kind of mentality is what makes those positions special, and those kids will be held to different standards anyway, especially QB’s.

Whatever it means to be ‘put on a pedestal’ I think Shrive deserves that kind of special mention.

All Recruiting is Kinda

From the athlete’s side. There’s only one case when it’s not Kinda: a signed Letter of Intent. And even that is Kinda, in that it’s only temporary: you can transfer to another IA and sit out a year or go AA and play right away.

And that LOI timeframe is assbackwards as well. National LOI Day is the FIRST day recruits can sign with a school, but they don’t have to, as Pryor showed.

So although the ‘you either you are or you’re not’ appear mutually exclusive, in Recruiting this framing is meaningless. Because, even if you are, you really might not be.

History Lesson

How many times are people going to be duped into these committments and press conferences? Has anyone been paying attention to college football for the last dozen years and how this process works?

The sad truth has been and continues to be that committments mean absolutely nothing.

Until national signing day none of this means shit.

You know....

If I tried to tell my wife I was “kind of committed” to her, she’d kill the f-k out of me.

You’re either in or your not. Jones may one day be in, but right now, he’s OUT.

This is the most flawed pretend-logic going today

See if you can spot the bullshit difference:
’You’re either in or you’re not’
‘It is what it is’
‘You either are or you are’

  1. is the fraud people use to give off an air that they are asserting an unassailable stance. As if framing a situation in between two absolutes like this gives a point more weight. Btw, it was made popular earlier this decade by that prince of Aristotelian logic, George W. Bush. Applying this mechanism to recruiting is the most ridiculous of farces.
  2. is the device used to make people feel like they’re making a statement of some substance by saying absolutely nothing at all. Made famous in the past few years by professional athletes bored with the standard cliches they had been forced into by repetitive and equally boring media inquiries.
  3. is some shite I just made up. Could be the next famous anti-disambiguation to make rounds if it were proffered and marketed by someone cooler than I. Maybe I’ll write Afroman and see if he’d be interested in building it into his next jingle. Or really stretch it and see if I can use it to compare commitment of high school recruiting to the commitment of marriage.

No hard feelings though. As you can see, I dig that you’re biased toward tailgating ;)

But I’m biased towards tailgating, as you may imagine. -ts

I see your point

but am of the mindset that decisions requiring a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer mean you’re either yes or no. If you’re leaning towards one, or thinking about one, or haven’t eliminated one, or want to check out the other options to make sure, then all of those things mean: NO, you’re not yet committed.

If he had said, “I’m leaning towards PSU, likely go there, just need to tie up some loose ends and I’ll be cool”, then that’s fine. He said he was committed, which in my mind means “case closed”.

Eh, the recruiting process is so screwed up, that it forces these kids to make decisions without all of the available information, and pushes them to value the wrong things (see also: snake oil). Unfortunately, no one is committed until LOI day, but I’m always happy when people are closer to deciding on PSU than some other loser school. coughPitt, cough

And we’re all biased towards tailgating. As PSUers, it’s in our DNA. Glad you agree!

I think the point is we need to relax here

The kid picked us way early for a reason: he saw something he liked. I still think we’re his #1 pick, so let the kid shop around a bit. It’s a part of growing up to visit colleges (I’d imagine more so if you’re an athlete), so let him explore his options. He “sort of committed” which to me says he was able to see himself in Blue and White.

When I was looking around for colleges (although in my mind I was always planning on being a legacy from my parents at PSU, but still had some doubts) a tour guide said the following, “You really have to ask yourself, ‘Do you see yourself here?’ For me, this was the place I saw myself at and loved it, but maybe you don’t”. Side note, tour guide was from UDel, I’m now a junior at PSU. Anyway, my point is, the kid committed for a reason (sort of at least), so don’t worry when he travels around, because I think he might be like I was and always saw myself as a Lion.

Update -- We're cool.

Jones’ mother posted the following on FOS’ free Audibles board. Seems I’m overreacting to some selective quoting:

http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?s=157&f=1395&t=4232445

In all fairness to those who have become used to my posts every now and then on Audibles…just want you to know that I’ve decided to stop posting to provide separation from “the fans” and PJ’s #1 fan…that being me! Just want to let you know that you should believe only half of what is written in most papers—-just as a comment here can be spun, spun some more and then respun, it is often the case. The conversation between PJ and the reporter occured because the reporter called to “check PJ’s status/interest regarding participating in the UnderArmour Game as the final selections are being made”. Once the return call was made, it was apparent that that was not the purpose of the call…immediately leading PJ to be aloof——commenting with “kind of” and “alright”. The only things he provided detail about were his intentions to be at PSU this weekend, the next and the next. The schools that were mentioned were the answer to the question of “what other schools are currently recruiting you”. Nothing more, nothing less.

I have to say that I am appreciative of the responses of most during this time—-especially because as fans you are only given a small glimpse of what actually is going on. The fact that most have not been quick to judge is a remarkable testimony to the goodness of most (who probably remember what it was like to be 16). Even I have to admit that I was not always approving of PJ’s actions lately but have come to understand his feelings and will continue to guide him accordingly. As I have stated before, trust the abilities of the coaching staff and know that they will do what is best for PSU.

So, while there is no such thing as kind of pregnant—-understand that PJ’s commitment stands until he states differently—-kind of like telling your boyfriend/spouse your pregnant but keeping it a secret until your sure the pregnancy is going to last beyond the first months that are so crucial in a baby’s development. Trust the staff…they know what they are doing!

It has been a pleasure…WE ARE…

PS. English was my major…but when asked who is it, I really don’t say “It is I”…although that would be correct. LOL
