Springtime Ramblings of a Mad Man
Maybe its the 70 degree weather that swept through the area this weekend. Maybe its the Pirates not sucking. Maybe its the fact that the Penguins STILL own the Flyers, but I'm feeling good, and full of ideas.
Let me preface this by saying that I love Blue and White weekend exactly the way it is today. Its that Penn State fix that typically we don't have from bowl season all the way up to September. Granted the basketball team went a long way in closing that gap, but this year still promises to be a fun beginning to 2009. Did I mention its all free? What I'm about to say isn't a suggestion on how to "fix" the spring game, because I don't think it needs fixed, but rather, spice it up a bit.
Why not play Pitt in the Spring Game?
-Think about it. Pitt-Penn State probably wouldn't crack an ABC/ESPN primetime slot in the fall, heck, it might not even crack ABC/ESPN at 3:30. But schedule Pitt for the Spring Game, and suddenly you add a national telecast to an otherwise meaningless game. ESPN seems to like to cover spring games, and I'm sure they'd be all over the chance to broadcast one with some actual story lines and emotion. No matter what, its more intriguing than Tim Tebow vs. the second string defense.
-It'd be our opportunity to play Pitt on a home and home basis without actually giving anything up. You still get you're 7-8 home games in the regular season, and considering you don't currently charge for the spring game as it is, you're not losing any money if it isn't in State College some years. The years its in Pittsburgh, you might even be able to get MLB to have the Phillies and Bucs play down the street giving fans from out east all the more incentive to go the three extra hours into Pittsburgh. If Penn State ever does play Pitt for real again, it certainly won't be for any longer than two years. Playing in the Spring Game would be a way to keep things going indefinitely.
-It would go a long way in appeasing the Pittsburgh media. While I'm sure the crusty old Gene Colliers and Bob Smiziks of the world would have their gripes with it, in the end they'd know its better than nothing.
-It might even help the team. It's hard to simulate the pressure of a real game when the crowd is more concerned with getting a tan than paying much attention to the game, and you're playing against your buddies. Play Pitt, and suddenly, theres something on the line. Maybe not a bowl bid, or a conference title, but pride. When you add genuine competition, it can only help you. Pressure, even in a limited sample size, might tell us things about people that a normal spring game might not.
-I could be completely off base with this, but I feel lik its at least worth talking about. I'm sick of Greg Paulus talk.

That would work
If it didn’t violate 296 NCAA rules.

Way back in the day
They used to be allowed to scrimmage local colleges in the pre-season but that was outlawed a long time ago.

Really?
Haha wow do I look like an idiot. Well then make it “voluntary” like in the NFL.

Better idea
Similar to one of the Super Bowl halftime events, at halftime of the BW game can we get the girls volleyball team against the girls fencing team in a Lingerie Bowl?

Word
Why haven’t we seen an event notice yet? Didn’t organizing this Pajama Social fall to Mike’s team at the last meeting? This double-secret photo project better be somet……hey, wait a minute! Is the photo project really a photodocumentary of the Fencing/Vball Pajama Social? If it was another VIP shindig I didn’t have enough bling for, I’m gonna be very depressed.

PSU-Pitt Spring Game
wouldn’t be played like a scrimmage game. They would go out and try to kill each. Worst of all, the game wouldn’t count except in our heads.
And what happens when players get injured?

Do you mean what happens when Zug maimes half their team (mostly defense).
We all just go home as if nothing happened.
fact.
This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope.

Injured by a Pitt football player?
Probably not likely. Have you seen them play football?
All jokes aside, like it’s been stated before, if it didn’t violate NCAA rules, I’d still rather watch Blue v. White in a scrimmage. Gives us a chance to see the up and coming stars, who looks good/bad/etc. without the risk of serious injury to starters. It would end up being played like a regular season game and not a scrimmage, which would inevitably lead to injury. So I’m going to stay traditional on this one and say that I would be pissed the F off if they ever changed BW Weekend.

It Would Be Played Like A Scrimmage
This isn’t 1974. The hate between the athletes doesn’t run nearly as deep as it does say, between the fanbases. They’d respect eachother I’m sure.
As for injuries, they’re going to happen whether you’re playing Pitt, or Blue-White.

The hate will burn
when PSU looks across the field and see their yellow inferiors.
Just as Pitt will look across the field and see their Masters.

Just as Pitt will look across the field and see their Masters.
I fear I may have taken this too literally.

It would be better if Cornley was looking down at Eddie, but it sucked so much, I didn’t care.

Only trouble is that someone will log into BSD and be like “Oh, cool look at the all comments on my fanpost!” and then they’ll be like “Oh, no, it’s just that jackass, Rambler. I hate that jerk.”
Hahaha, sorry.

Why don't we just play them
every year in the regular season like we did for 100 years?
“The hate between the athletes doesn’t run nearly as deep as it does say, between the fanbases.”
Remember LaVar Arrington driling Pitt’s punter?
And the game, even in September, would always at least be in the 3:30 slot. If both teams were ranked, it might even get an 8:00 start for Happy Valley games.
