TARAN BUIE COMMITS TO PENN STATE

                                                          Whoo_siren_medium

Talor Battle's half-brother, the #37 ranked player for the class of 2010, committed on the team bus after tonight's victory.  He picked us over programs such as Maryland, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech.

I have this from MULTIPLE sources close to the Penn State men's basketball program.

What a wonderful evening.  Our Nittany Nation student section takes over the Garden and wills this team to a championship, and now this.  Truly the biggest night in the history of Penn State basketball.

WE ARE... PENN STATE

WOW.

some very big names went there. i like how it’s a program that also helps kids with their OFF THE COURT behavior. sounds great.

Good for Ed.

Guess like Doc Rivers last year for the Celtics. No matter how good a coach you are, you have to have the horses. Hopefully, we get a few more recruits, and away we go.

Also, I didn’t realize that Jeff Brooks was the runner up for Mr. Basketball in Kentucky. That’s a hell of an accomplishment, and an accomplishment for Ed to have landed him. While losing Cornley, Pringle, and Morrissey will hurt, I think we have some players coming back that we can build on this thing.

Also, keep us posted on Morrissey’s injury. Hopefully it ain’t that bad.

Lastly, what are Buie’s stats (height, weight, etc.). I remember playing ball against his dad, and his dad was 6-8, I believe. Hopefully he’s somebody that can give us a presence inside.

Just awesome. I’m honestly not sure an NCAA selection and even a run to the sweet 16 could have done as much as the MSG painted white as they cut down the nets.

by NittanySeaLion on Apr 3, 2009 6:25 AM EDT reply actions

I'll say it...

Fine. I’ll be the Debby Downer…

Congratulations Penn State…we’re officially…the 66th best college basketball team in America.

I want my stance to be clear. I love my school, and this is my school. I am not “rooting against my school” However, I will not celebrate mediocrity. I just can’t do it.

I don’t have a lot of high hopes for our basketball program, but I certaintly have higher hopes than an NIT championship. And yes, IMO, getting knocked out in the first round of the real tournament is huge steps above “cutting down the nets in MSG.”

Maybe some of my friends are right, and this is a step in the right direction. Personally, it’s taken Ed what, 6 or 7 years to get us to this step? Wow. 6 or 7 years to make us the 66th best college team in America. I just don’t get what everyone is so happy about. That is not my definition of success, and I didn’t realize that my school’s fan base would celebrate mediocrity in such a large way. I know I’m not alone in my thinking, b/c SI.com had PSU winning that game last night as about their 17th of 20 biggest stories in College Basketball.

I want all of our teams to be successful, in all sports. I just needed to vent. I’m sorry I don’t view this season as a success. Top 25 finishes = success. Big 10 Tournament finals = success. Sweet 16s = success. This season should be…SHOULD be…an example to future PSU basketball teams at what is a bare minimum standard of success.

OK. Now rip the shit out of me. Who knows though, maybe someone else out there will actually agree w/ me, and have a higher opinion of our sports teams, and expect more than 66th overall finishes in mens college basketball.

by JonnyR44 on Apr 3, 2009 6:50 AM EDT reply actions

My only question is...

…do you really think we’re the 66th overall team in the country? Really? Radford is better, just because they were a sacrificial 16th seed?

You're entitled to your opinion

but i’ll keep saying it, you need to walk before you can run. you need to develop a fan base out of otherwise football fans before your players have something to play for. you can’t recruit bluechips w/o a fanbase. you can’t play decent OOC teams if you’re viewed as an RPI killer. you can’t go to the tourny w/o bluechips recruits and a decent OOC schedule…

these kids played their butts off, and our seniors came here at a time when basketball meant nothing — now it means something.

If you want a football analogy — this was the goal-line stand at Indiana.

For me, this was my first year watching PSU basketball — and I fell in love with the team and their heart. NIT or not, watching this team roll through Florida, Notre Dame, and Baylor fills me with pride.

NATIONAL invitational CHAMPS

In all seriousness, we aren’t the 66th best team. There are 32? or so automatic bids that go out to teams that we could probably run out of the gym, but winning their conference gets them in. Also, considering we beat MSU on their court means that we can beat a team in the final four of that other tournament. This is a good thing, and getting beat in the first round does not equal what was accomplished here.

by farrellpsu on Apr 3, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

You misread the jubilance

We’re not celebrating the NIT championship like it’s the crowning achievement of a basketball program. Read the post below this one again. I specifically said, “I’m not foolish enough to think this makes Penn State basketball a national powerhouse.”

This season was just a step on a journey. We all want the same thing for Penn State basketball. We all want PSU to be a national player that routinely wins Big Ten championships and goes to the NCAA tournament and advances. The difference between you and us is that you are waiting for the team to get there before you are willing to offer your support. You, sir, are a front runner. I’ll admit that I was never much of a PSU basketball fan until two years ago. Mostly that was because I did not live in State College and I only had the opportunity to watch the team maybe once a year. The BTN has allowed me the opportunity to follow this team like I never could before. So I feel like I have suffered through the past two seasons with this team. This made the NIT championship so sweet because I appreciate the progress this team has made to get to this point. I certainly hope this isn’t the high water mark for PSU basketball going forward, but right now, at this point in our program, this win shows significant progress from the team that was only winning one conference game per year.

If I were sitting back waiting for this team to make the final four before I chose to support them, I guess this NIT championship wouldn’t thrill me either.

Clap......

clap……clap…..clap…clap..clap.clap.clap.clap! Well said Mike.

I think I am celebrating this win for the guys on the team more than what it means to win the NIT. The 66th argument is nonsense (no one really believes that its just an easy way to poke fun at the NIT). I know the NIT tourney isn’t that important to the general public, but ask Cornley or Morrisey or Pringle what it meant to be playing basketball in April after the four/five years they have been through. These kids all played with heart over the past couple weeks and won some great games again good competition (at Florida where I think they lost 1 time this year, ND, and Baylor). Quite frankly, I was incredibly proud to be a Penn Stater last night.

We are not normal. We are legends.

Baby steps

We are moving forward, I am pumped to see the students show up in the numbers they did. Do you know how many Bball fans were developed this year, and they will be there next year for our home games because now they see how fun PSU basketball can be. I would put this year on par with our sweet 16 year for success level and am very happy with where we are.

This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope.

Exactly

We went from 15-16 to 27-11 with an NIT championship…considering our expectations for this team before the seaon, I consider that a success.

by Screen Name 20 on Apr 3, 2009 9:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Okay, now that I have more than 45 seconds.

This “66th best team in America” stuff is total bullshit, and I suspect you know it. Do you really think that any of the 13-16 seeds were better teams than Penn State? That’s 16 teams right there. And if you don’t think that winning the NIT qualifes as success for this program, you could not possibly know how decimated this program was when Ed got here. Most of our best players fled the program (Marlon Smith, Jan Jagla, that guy who ended up at Wisconsin), and we were left with a bunch of guys who were lucky to be wearing a Division I uniform. There were guys like Jarrett Stephens and Geary Claxton, but that was just about all. There was absolutely nothing in the way of a bench — if our main guy wasn’t on fire, it was a loss. Occasionally, we got lucky when the lightbulb turned on for a guy like Travis Parker.

The point is, you can’t possibly know how beneficial this NIT was without understanding that the program was a smoldering fucking crater when Ed arrived, and the fact that a lot of our best players fled town set us back even further. Now we have something going.

(really, would a first round NCAA loss have felt better than this?)

Agree with your post

But Ed would’ve been lucky to have had Jarrett Stephens, who, prior to Battle was PSU’s only player to be named 1st team All Big Ten by the coaches and media. Jarrett graduated in 2000 and had a cup of coffee with the Grizzlies before suffering his second ACL tear. He was like Cornley except more of a rebounder with slightly less of a shooting touch.

What a simply amazing article...

pulling the curtain aside and giving us a glimpse into a bunch of behind the scenes activity. I mistakingly thought that since the BJC was built, that we had top notch BB facilities. I was dead wrong. Hard to imagine a new coach coming in with little name recognition, facing not only a patchy tradition, cold climate, middle-of-nowhere location, little brother syndrome, little fan or administration support. This article makes you aware and more appreciative of the effort it has taken to get to where PSU basketball is today.

Makes me appreciate even more guys like Cornly and Battle and Brooks and others that looked deep into themselves and decided they were the players to commit to pulling PSU sreaming and kicking out of the Basketball wasteland.

Based on the article, the facilites have vastly improved. Admin support – check
Now PSU is sending 36 busloads of fans to NYC. Fan support – check.
Top 50 verbal – check.
Big 10 Coach of the year – coach recognition – check.

Although we can’t do anything about the weather or location, these other controllable factors are setting the most important building blocks for future success – establishing tradition.

Thanks all you Nittany B-Ball supporters

You’ve responded toJonnyR44 much better than I could have. My first thought was to send Cornley over to his house!

If you didn’t get (positively) excited over the game last night, there is something wrong with you! JoePa, Russ Rose, Coquese Washington and who knows who else were all there showing that “They Are…Penn State”. (Course Joe took everybody over to Juniors in Brooklyn after the game!)

Really, to try to argue that we are #66, is ridiculous! Three weeks ago, I rooted like hell to get into the NCAA. I felt bad we didn’t make it. We were obviously better than many of the automatic bids. Do you really think some of the autotrons like UT-Chatt, Bobby Morris, Cornell(a 14th seed!), etc. were better competition than PSU? Sure, we might have been one and out, or a victory and out. But this team has also shown that it can run with some of the Bulls like MSU. So, who knows if they could have made a bit of a run.

But that is not the NCAA. Rightfully so, the NCAA gives the “littler” guys a chance for their moment in the spotlight with the automatic bids. But those are not the 65 “best” teams in the NCAA!

In hindsight, I really feel this run to the NIT Championship was much more important to PSU Basketball than a NCAA 14-16 seed. Obviously, if they had lost early, the NIT bid would have meant little if nothing. That was like a PSU F-Ball game last night. What spirit!

Florida analogy

I know I have compared us to Florida many times, but things keep getting more and more similar. Florida was a football only school, then Donovan started to slowly build them up. First winning more conference games, then winning some NIT games, then making the tournament.

Then one summer (1998), everything changed. He landed two blue-chippers, Mike Miller and Teddy Dupay. Everything changed. They made a Final Four run their second year (don’t hold me to this, again at work and going off memory), then recurits followed. Now every year Florida pumps out lottery picks.

Maybe Buie can be this player to help turn yet another corner and make the tournament more consistently. Sure this is wishful thinking, but why not? I can see it happening now. Players see how into this team the fans got, and that’s a huge step in recruiting. I hope Ed uses this momentum to continue getting players who are willing to learn, but more importantly fight like this year’s team did.

by STU Boy on Apr 3, 2009 8:30 AM EDT reply actions

Eh.....

Donovan went to the NIT in his 2nd season, the sweet sixteen in his third, and the national title game in his fourth.

by speedomike on Apr 3, 2009 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Things weren't nearly as bad

But it was still a rebuilding process. When Donovan came in, at least he had a full roster. He just needed that one recruit. When he came in, it was like PSU in season 4 or 5 of Ed, not season one.

Weather

Not trying to single you out, but why does weather get cited so much as a factor in recruiting? What about Florida’s unbearable heat and humidity? Or the hurricanes? Nowhere has perfect weather.

San Diego, CA

though I guess they have to put up with arid conditions and brush fires often enough (oh, and the millions of other people who congest the area due to the good weather)

I grew up and lived in PA

until I was in my late 20’s. I’ve lived in Virginia for the last 10. The 10 degree warmer weather on average, year round is awesome.

In March, in VA we’re starting to enjoy jacketless days, and green trees, blooming flowers while my friends and family in PA are wondering when it will snow again. If nothing else I think there is a psychological edge. Why so many suicides in the Pacific Northwest.

As a homeowner I think lots of folks have faced the grim reality of owning a home in Florida – one reason the market has cratered there. As a college student, your year typically runs from August to May – perfect time to be in Florida.

The most important thing about last night

was that we looked like a basketball school. An honest to god team. Nobody brings 19 buses of people to an NIT game. We’d have never got that from an NCAA tournament apperance, even if we won a couple of games.

If you watched last night you saw a school that was committed to it’s basketball team, fans and athletic depatment alike. I though bringing up all of the coaches (JoePa wasn’t the only one there by a long shot) was a very cool and highly symbolic gesture.

I don’t know, but I think we might have seen something imprtant happen last night. The only thing missing was a black monolith at mid-court.

We took a bunch of buses to the NCAA tourney in 2001

Can’t remember the number, but we had a nice convoy heading down I-95 to Atlanta for the Sweet 16. It certainly wasn’t 36 buses, but at least a dozen, which for a trip as long as that and on short notice was pretty impressive. And tickets were pricier than $10.

Anybody else go on that trip?

More Mondesi's House Lovin'
You know I am a fan of neither team but I am struck by how the jackasses from Penn State come in here trumpeting a win in the NIT like it is something great.

Pitt makes the NCAAs, the real tournament, year in and year out and while they do under perform they are in the tournament that matters.

Congratulations on the NIT win Penn State. However, your self- rightous, blowhard fans are truly classless and never show up when the going gets tough. Enjoy being the big fish in the small pond.

A quick tour of the sports pages;

Penn State’s NIT win;

8th headline on the WWL, not a top story (they broadcast the stupid thing)

Yahoo Sports – Not a top story or a headline, but there is a top story about the UFC

Fox Sports – Not a top story or headline

Funny how there are headlines about the Final Four and coaches staying and going in the NCAA, but nothing about the NIT.

Response?

O God, the press doesn’t like us. What the hell are we gonna do?! (Rolls Eyes).

We aren’t the classless ones. No one pissed on Pitt. Mondesi started it all by pissing on us with the “#66” line, so who the hell is the f***ing classless one?

We set a school record for wins this year, upset 4 top 25 teams, won 2 games at the buzzer, came from behind in darn near every game, won out first national tournament, and showed up in New York in 36 buses for a game that “didn’t matter”. It was an incredible year with memory after memory, and while you can laugh all you want, it makes me happy to know our team got the most out of its basketball season.

Did yours?

And just so you know, I’ve been a Penn State basketball fan since before most of “yinz” we’re Pitt basketball fans, so shove it.

I'm not sure why you even bother.

This “#66” stuff was as predictable as the sunrise. Our basketball team exceeded expectations and provided our fans with two weeks of thrilling basketball. Their team shit the bed again, this time as a #1 seed. And they lost to a team from Philly, which really drives Pittsburghers insane.

They’re grasping at straws. We put more asses in the seats for a secondary tournament in New York City than Pitt will have at Heinz field for their first home game.

Let the Pitt fans be. The #66 talk is just a defense mechanism to cover for their athletic impotence and irrelevance.

Evaluation

July, 2008: Good sized combination guard who’s also a good athlete. A scoring guard that can also play the point when needed. Excellent ball handler and passer. Good speed and quickness with the ball. Can break down defenders in transition, from the top of the key or the wing and get into the lane. Can change speeds and directions on a dime. Likes to crossover both ways, go between his legs or use his quick first step to attack the defense. Slashes in between defenders to score and likes to shoot the one dribble pull up jumper going right from about 18 feet. Has good shooting form but is streaky at best from behind the arc. Great shooter off the dribble when he is allowed to get rhythm dribbles. He can stop and pop with great elevation, release and follow through. Does a good job going to the offensive glass when playing the scoring guard position. He will sneak in from the perimeter and tip in a big basket late in the game. Has an excellent feel for the game on both ends of the floor. Defensively applies good pressure on the ball and is alert away from the ball to help cut off a drive. Must become consistent from three to draw out his defender to set up his great ability to make scoring plays off the dribble.

June, 2008: Taran is a skilled and athletic combo guard. More of a 2 now, he is a very adept scorer. He is the brother of Penn State’s Talor Battle. Taran is an excellent slasher and a good shooter from 20 feet and in. He can score standing still and off the bounce. He is a good athlete that can dunk on an unsuspecting opponent. He is also a good defender that is very competitive. Taran is a top 40 player in the 2010 class nationally.

April, 2008: Taran is a very smooth guard who lets the game come to him. Despite having the ability to get his shot off at virtually anytime, he picks his spots well and has the versatility to take whatever the defense gives him. He has several gears off the dribble and can almost lull a defender to sleep before quickly accelerating and blowing past him. While he can seemingly glide to the rim, he can also stop quickly in the mid-range area and elevate over the top of the defense to get off his pull-up jumper. He also has a nice looking 3-point stroke that he will knock down whenever defenders aren’t there upon the catch. Despite his composure and good decision making, Buie almost always plays off the ball, which makes him undersized for the two-guard position. He is also very effective on the defensive end of the floor as he has the quickness to contain the ball along with the anticipation to come up with steals and deflections when off the ball.

October, 2007: Taran is a smooth, athletic combination guard. He scores with ease and is more comfortable playing off the ball than with it in his hands currently. He scores in a variety of ways, shoots out to the 3 point line and drives all the way to the rim to finish. Taran has the ability to take over a game with his scoring. He will be a high ranking member of the class of 2010.

A championship is a championship, we should take what we can get.

The NIT was the original tournament for NCAA basketball, and at one point had all the status that the current NCAA tournament has. It is not a justifiable argument to say that by winning this tournament makes us the 66th best team. As someone mentioned before, how is Radford better? How is Morgan State better? There are plenty of teams in the NIT tournament that would thrash a number of teams in the NCAA tournament.

As a student during the dark years of football, basketball was just awful. I think Cornley said it after the game when commenting on the student section about how amazing the fans are , 30 + buses coming from State College, when his freshman year they couldn’t get 3 bus loads to come across campus.

Nittany Lion fans, enjoy this. It is a step in the right direction.

Calling me a front runner?

I gotta take exception to being called a front runner. I, unlike prolly 75% of the students at the game, follow the team. I know how bad they’ve been the past decade. How many students at that game could actually name all 5 starting members for our team?

I am a PSU Sports fan. I rooted for the Men’s Basketball team this year, as I did last year and the year before that. Because I follow them, I know how bad they are likely to be next year unless Dru Jones really does become a man over the summer, b/c losing Cornley and Pringle and Morrisey? Ouch.

I am not a front runner. I just don’t get cheer and get all happy when they win the NIT. I expect more from our teams than that.

I’m a realist, and I just refuse to celebrate mediocrity. And that’s what this basketball team was…Mediocre. I don’t mean I don’t love them, but I’m calling a spade a spade. This was a mediocre team in a mediocre…ok, slightly above mediocre…conference. The front runners are the people who were there rooting at MSG and who don’t know anything our team and won’t be there next year when we’re struggling like hell to replace Cornley.

Blah blah blah

I’ve been a bigger fan of PSU hoops than football since 1988 (I’m a masochist, I know) and I’d much rather hang out with fans who are late to the party and having fun than those who are always looking for the negatives in an overtly positive situation.

Therein lies the difference between being a “follower” of the team and being a “fan” of the team.

If you’ve followed the team for as long as you claim, then you should be able to put into perspective what has happened this year. I would argue that this team is far from mediocre, but even if that’s what they are, it’s still miles and miles ahead of where we were.

So then you're saying

You won’t celebrate anything this team does until they go to the final four? Why even be a fan? What joy could you possibly get out of watching any sport?

then you’d realistically understand that our team historically sucked.

And the national media...

And we’ll see if the national media agrees w me when they release they’re last Top 25 poll. I’d love to see them in it, realistically they prolly will only get a few votes in the Honorable Mention category (MSU playing well does make State look so much better) but this NIT win is only a big deal to Penn Staters.

And one last thing…Great. They sent 36 busses to NYC, or whatever. Where was that support during the regular season, and last season? Hope those “fans” are here to stay for the long haul this time, but I doubt they are.

OK…and PPS. Whoever said they should send Cornley over to my house…I know the guy. We’ve talked basketball. Guarentee you he’s happy that he had a long, senior season and it ended in MSG…but do you really think he views this season as a success? No one is harder on him than himself, and I guaren damn tee you he wanted to get into the tourney and get a crack at somebody. He gave this school everything he could, and congratulations to him, but don’t you think he’s just itching for one more year so he could have one more crack at a REAL successful season??? Ok…now rip me to shreds…again…

by JonnyR44 on Apr 3, 2009 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

Calling the team mediocre is unfair- they were in the last four teams out of the NCAA, and made the best of a bad situation and won the tournament they got into. They won’t make the top 25 poll, but that’s not what this is about- look at the program five years ago and tell me this isn’t progress. Tell me that Ed hasn’t started turning this thing around. I don’t care if other people think it’s a big deal- they don’t need to. Beating Indiana and MSU at the end of a meaningless football season didn’t mean much outside of PSU, but we saw where that led. We would rather have won NCAA’s or something, but it didn’t work out and the team made the best of it.

And I honestly don’t care if those 36 buses of people don’t become rabid fans- people like a winner. The student section at football games in ‘04 was awfully empty, too. What matters is that they did go, and gave the seniors a sendoff that they very much deserved. I hate the “true fan” argument- it’s not like you get a patch or pass a test to be one. But if you’re a fan, how can you be this upset about how it turned out? For better or worse, we were stuck in the NIT. I’d rather win the damn thing- with most of the games not especially close, I might add- than lose in it.

Penn Staters belong at Penn State. The problem with a lot of kids is they just don’t know they are Penn Staters yet.

my guess

Is that a true “realist” would see this season for what it was. One of the five most successful seasons the program ever had. Arguably the best.

If you’re such a devoted fan, why not just enjoy the day? If you really did follow this team though it’s, many, many, shitty seasons, can’t you find any pleasure in a big win?

Basically, I don’t care if you went to every game, named your first born son Ed Fogel, and carried Jammele Cornley’s love child to full term in a surgically implanted womb. If you aren’t happy with the way this season ended, you’re no fan of this team or these kids. Last night was cause for a bit of celebration. To call it a “celebration of mediocrity” is being shitty just for the sake of it.

Grab a beer or 3. Can’t you just be happy for a result far better than most people expected? I’m sure Cornley would have loved going to the NCAAs, but even he’s gotta admit last night (and most of the season) was a great ride for PSU hoop.
I’d love to hear how you feel about the football team (actually I really could care less).

Why, if the media says so it must be a fact

Mediocre means ordinary. A dispassionate observer could not say that the 2008-2009 team was an ordinary Penn State basketball team. Clearly it’s above average, at least.

“No one is harder on him than himself, and I guaren damn tee you he wanted to get into the tourney and get a crack at somebody.”

Ever played a sport? Every true competitor who isn’t perfect feels exactly the same way. (Actually, a lot of amazing athletes who are practically perfect feel exactly the same way.) How someone could see this as a sign of mediocrity is beyond me.

by Aaron PSU on Apr 3, 2009 7:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Only the beginning...

As an alum who lives in the NYC area I can’t tell you how proud it makes me to see the basketball program perform this way. MSG was like our own little arena…a private screening of Penn State basketball’s coming out party. This whole NIT run was a celebration…a crescendo to something greater.

No one on this blog or in the PSU fan fraternity is foolish enough to believe this is some kind of precipice or apex for the program but it is one hell of a good start on the climb to the peak. I’ve been one of those guys who has always wanted more from this team…always getting disappointed when the ‘next year they will be good’ mantra stopped being believable. Well, now I believe it again. It’s easy to get caught on the excitement of this voctory. Why not?!?! This team played the schedule it was given, and they didn’t make the tournament. They were obviously disappointed but they made the best of it. I think a lot of us could learn a lesson or two from these kids and apply it to our lives.

I believe that Buioe would have committed to us win or lose but we really have to stop and think about what it means for the program to have him come on board. He is a legit recruit, not an undersized kid who plays over his head, not a kid lost in the sticks of the midwest that noone else knows about, not an injury risk that we’re taking a shot on. No, he is the most sought after recruit to ever consider playing here…let alone commit. If you believe that this season’s successes contributed to his decision then fine, call it a mediocre season. If you think the way that I do and you believe that this team proved itself to a major recruit, the student body, the alumni base and the athletic department then this season was a resounding success.

We’ve been to the NCAAs before but those were Sr. filled squads who could shoot lights out from 3. You always knew they were taking their one shot at the big time before slipping back to mediocrity. This team is different. This is a base, a foundation that PSU has never before had the ability to manufacture. This is only the beginning – but a damn fun one at that!

by phanatic's phloozies on Apr 3, 2009 1:59 PM EDT reply actions

Definitely!

I couldn’t agree more with your last paragraph. I am a relatively new PSU fan and now alum. I wasn’t a PSU fan at all until I went to school there (PSU is a little far away from Minnesota and all). But it seems like the other high points in previous seasons, particularly the sweet 16 run in 01 was like the MSU upset a few years ago, a simple game where they played way above themselves and happened to win 2 games. This whole season felt like a bigger better baseline. Instead of it being a season capping experience to beat MSU it was one of many good wins this year culminating in a NIT championship.

Great point.

While we lose Cornelly (who’s heart in soul will be hard to replace), Pringle, and Morrissey, we also have a team of what will now be juniors with all sorts of tournament experience. And I think this experience, in an elimination type setting, will definitely develop these kids better than playing in a one-and done, or win one, lose one in the NCAA tournament. But the people who can’t see the long range benefits of winning this tournament are the same as the bankers and Wall Street wizards who wrecked this country: You want immediate gratification, and don’t have either the patience, the courage, or the character to toil and work for a worthwhile goal. If it can’t be easily accomplished now, they don’t want bothered. And those aren’t the types of fans we want anyway.
