Penn State not a top party school?

Penn State is not even in the Top 10 of Playboy's 2009 Best Party schools, appearing in Playboy magazine's April issue.  With the catagory of "bikini" included in the ranking, it would appeard that warm weather is a necessity to rank high on this list.  So why the hell is IOWA on there???  And Wisconsin?  Come on!  Oh yeah and brains is a catagory...so again...West Virginia???  Get real folks.  Another reason not to bother reading Playboy :)

Sweet!

Well-played

But I’m biased towards tailgating, as you may imagine. -ts

Wait

When did my wife start reading Playboy? Do we have a subscription I don’t know about?

by BSD on Apr 20, 2009 4:42 PM EDT reply actions

I declare bullshit on this entire list

University of Iowa is #9, we are 13, and Wiscy is 6. I don’t even think they came here during football season, or they’d know we are the best tailgate environment on the planet.

And U of Miami gets a 20 for brains? Are you serious? We have the highest (if not the top, definitely close) graduation rate for athletes, as well as regular students (although I have met some people who should probably carry a license for being legally retarded). And one of the top research schools in the nation.

THIS is why you don’t read Playboy for the articles.

I don't know where they got that from

I pulled up the Us News and World Report College rankings and Miami ranks 51st, which is still pretty good, but they’re definitely below several other schools on the list that scored lower than 20. I’m guessing some editor for Playboy went there and bumped up their academic rating a few notches.

Scores

Were done by category, graded on a scale from 1-20, so apparently Miami is now in the Ivy League according to Playboy

Second the Bullshit

I could take the SATs blind with a steak knife as a writing utensil and still get into Miami. This list is nothing more than a rotating list to provide year long bragging rights to a school. Anyone who went to grad school knows of the similar merry go round of top schools (see Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford). That being said, when PSU gets the title, I’ll brag.

I'm okay with #13.

While we still drink a ton, a lot of historic & legendary PSU drinking traditions are either going the way of the dinosaur, or already gone. Plus, while the tailgating is nice, it used to be better. Uhaul trucks pulling up filled with 30 kegs was not uncommon, even as late as the early 90s.

More importantly, Phi Psi 500, Regatta, & Skeller Case Study are gone, Mifflin Streak is an incredibly watered down version of what it used to be. Insurance & the current police state in Happy Valley have killed off some great, great parties.

by Tailgate Shogun on Apr 20, 2009 5:53 PM EDT reply actions

Very True...

I only heard about the Phi Psi 500 from an instructor who went here. And doing the Mifflin Streak is a good way to get arrested like that one girl did last year, although I think she had the money to take it to trial and actually get off with no conviction.

They seem content to make drinking some fringe activity that only a small subculture at PSU does. This is despite the fact that there is a sign in my building saying only 7,000 of the 40,000 plus we have don’t drink. Although I think State Patty’s day was just AMAZING this year, students should enjoy it while it lasts because someone will be cracking down on it soon.

I was out in the trenches, which enables me to paint such a powerful picture, like Apocalypse Now.-Cormega

Was it

that

she had the money to take it to trial and actually get off with no conviction.
or was it her Vaginal Acrobatics?

Methodology

Also, they didn’t take into account the bar scene which I’m sure didn’t help us

by LegalLion on Apr 20, 2009 6:56 PM EDT reply actions

West Virginia??????

Are you serious? If they factored in brains, they should get 1 point for it. If you do a “compare college” search on collegeboard.com, you’ll see that they accept 88% of their applicants. The middle 50% avg SAT scores were: 470-560 for critical reading and 480-580 for math (keep in mind you get 300 points for taking the test and filling in your name right).

Penn State: 51% Critical Reading: 530 – 630 Math: 570 – 670
Miami actually isn’t that bad. However, keep in mind that their student population is almost 4 times smaller, so they could be more selective: 39% Critical Reading: 580 – 680
Math: 610 – 700

As for the other stuff, we’re at a disadvantage because of the cold weather, and if this is like the Princeton Review rankings they factor in non-drinking activities. Aside from LateNite (which only 200-300 people attend) we have no other non-drinking activities set up by the school

I always liked this excuse...
We choose not to rank Penn State among party schools because we think it is unfair to rank professionals among amatuers.~Playboy

i know it’s BS but it still sounds nice!

OH-FU!!! Movin' back to PA!!!

For better or for worse...

we’ve created a “holiday” so devoted to partying/drinking, it makes St. Patrick’s Day look like Easter.

When these other schools can claim that one, then we’ll talk.

Tosu isn't even on the list

…i’m ok w/ our ranking. or slightly appeased. i keep telling these pansies they don’t know how to drink.

in response to tOSU

i went to the osu game this year, and sadly not knowing my way around campus still driving drunk at 8 am, set up tailgating in an exclusive osu only lot. before the game we were slamming down beers playing dizzy bat and a group of osu students came over, because they had never seen the game before. we taught them and the results were priceless.

they failed at it too…not one could go 10 times and hit the can.=/

have you seen their "RV lot"????

it was sad. very very sad! and what the heck? no open containers??? and we had a PSU v tOSU flipcup tourney and PSU won 2 out 3 times (gotta give them that pity win)!!!

oh, how i can’t wait until my friends come back to PSU this yr for the PSU/tOSU game!!!

OH-FU!!! Movin' back to PA!!!

Damnit!

We’re the Outback Bowl of Big Ten Party Schools.

We need to try harder. I blame Tim Curley.

by Cairo on Apr 21, 2009 12:12 AM EDT reply actions

A couple of years ago, Playboy had an asterisk next to the ranking, and underneath it said something like "Many would note Penn State University in such a poll, however we at Playboy felt it unfair to include professionals with amatuers. "
