Because I Got High. Again.
Bad news for people who love bad news. You'll recall that Penn State linebacker Navorro Bowman has been serving a one-year term of probation since pleading guilty to a knocked-down disorderly conduct charge on May 30, 2008. This week, a probation revocation hearing will be held to determine if he has broken the terms of that probation.
Linebacker Navarro Bowman is already on probation for disorderly conduct, stemming from an on campus fight. Court sources tell WJAC that Bowman recently admitted to Centre County probation officials that he has smoked marijuana, at least twice, since December. Plus, Bowman has completed none of the 100 hours of community service that was ordered by the court. A hearing on his probation status is scheduled for this week.

Probation Revocation Hearing Set For Bowman
Linebacker Navorro Bowman, who is about one month away from completing his sentence of one-year probation for a disorderly conduct charge, is scheduled to appear before Judge Bradley P. Lunsford at 3 p.m. Tuesday for a probation revocation hearing.

Any legal-minded people know what this means?
I mean, it sounds like he admitted it to the probabtion officers when they asked, not like he got caught doing it, so I don’t know what that means.

I think it’s safe to assume he’s not going to admit to anything unless he’s already been implicated either by a drug test or by some other means. In other words, yes he did get caught.

I mean, the alternative scenario is they ask him “did you do drugs” as part of the normal protocol during his mandatory meetings and he says “yes, I smoked twice” without them really accusing or implicating him. That’s just kind of dumb, unless he thought he wasn’t going to pass a drug test. If he did fail a drug test, I’m not sure if we’d know that yet or not b/c it would be handled by his PO at the time.
What I do know is that if you admit guilt to a police officer, that evidence will stand in court. I once told a cop ‘yeah I had a beer’ after a party got busted and it appeared on the citation as the only evidence against me for underage drinking.

I'm not really disagreeing with you.
It’s just that, considering the circumstances, I can see him doing/saying something that a lawyer wouldn’t do. I’m not ready to panic or anything, but I am bothered by some of this (assuming there aren’t major parts of the story we aren’t getting, of course).

Jesus Christ
this is riGoddamndiculous.
@Dawson, if had to guess, it would make no difference whether he failed a test or he just came out and admitted to smoking. Either way, IF TRUE, he is an idiot. What of all that talk from him about how he straightened up after the last incident? And how hard is community service? What, was cutting grass getting in the way of smoking it?

Sort of what I was getting at
The PO asks him, have you used drugs, and he honestly responds, I figured he could have just been being honest. Don’t get me wrong, if he did this AND didn’t do ANY comm. service, the kid is an idiot, or just one lazy motherfucker.

And shouldn’t Bradley, or Vandy, or Joe or Fran or anyone either made sure he did his community service by the due date, or assign a grad assistant to babysit this fucking child? Panic?
I’m usually the first one to fly off the handle into a complete meltdown — but I’m reserving my panic this time. I’m just not sure of how much of this story is true, and even if it’s all true, what impact that has.
People screw up all the time on probation, maybe they’ll give him a second chance and another year of probation…
At least this wasn’t another police/arrest incident (that we know of) b/c THAT would be damning.

If these reports are true...
I think he must be suspended for at least a few games for breaking the law (especially while on probation!). But if Paterno feels the need to make yet another example out of a (good) player who decides to screw over his team and be a selfish moron, I wouldn’t be too surprised, and couldn’t really argue with it. It’ll be interesting to see how this one plays itself out.
UGH. The sheer idiocy of some of these players is amazing. I mean, yes, of course people make mistakes, but when you’re a) a football player and know you’ll be getting extra scrutiny, and b) already on probation for doing something else that was really really dumb, is it really that hard to keep your nose clean?!?

Community service
in state college there are so many possibilities of doing community service, especially places that will “count” the hours for you…after an underage, I had to do maybe 10 hours or so. I worked at the AgFair for maybe 3 hours, had the guy sign 10, and that was that. Imagine what Navorro could get…what, you need 100 hours? Come serve chicken cosmos to the girls volleyball team one night and we’ll call it even.

part of it comes into play. Lavarro has to figure out how to get the cosmos onto campus and serve them to the women’s vball team.

Community service
I had to do 40 hrs in college stemming from an underage/disorderly. It’s not as bad as it sounds. The judge refers you to some place, usually a public works dept. The person I reported to was understanding of my situation. I put in the time and effort and he let me off early, actually going so far as to offer me a job. If i wasn’t graduating the next summer I probably would’ve taken it for summer work.

Doesn't all make sense...
While I agree with 110% of everyone’s comments – especially the ones about him being an idiot – but the Zero HR’s of community service doesn’t add up. First, it is up to his probation officer to set that sh@! up or verify it, they aren’t gonna take someone’s word for it – “Yes, I did two HRs Saturday Sir” – Check!. And usually, it starts right away. Second, if he hasn’t done a single HR, wouldn’t it have been reported well before now and brought to the attention of someone else. The only scenario I can think of is that the PO was letting him slide and at some point the PO was let go, replaced, etc. with a new one who has done some research. OR – the media, who is probably the best at watching out for people on probabtion (hell, maybe they should be PO’s) sent in a tip.
Anyway, at some point, our system needs to do it’s job as well. This KID obviously made a mistake and is on probabtion for a reason – and those people have probation officer’s for the same reason — they lack judgement and responsibility. So, to the point of no work being done, I blame the system and Bowman if its true because he clearly needed guidance and a watchful eye that has failed to do it’s job.
To the point of smoking mary jane and admitting it to ANYONE – F@#!ing stupidest Sh!@ I’ve ever heard and it’s a wonder he even knows to tackle the guy with the ball. Sorry for the rant – i’m sure it’s all over the place but this just p1sses me off beyond belief.

Smoked some weed? I could care less. Got into a fight two years ago? Big deal. There are hundreds of kids who do more than that in a night and call it a good one. As for the community service, he’s got another month before the “year” is up, just wait until school is over in 2 weeks and do 4 hours a day for the rest of May. He’ll be fine, Lunsford isn’t a dick.

Bowman’s whole plan was to wait until May 1st after spring ball and put in a whole bunch of hours all at once? Is that so wrong? It’s not like he missed the deadline, he’s still got a month.
I mean, that’s what I would do if I had that type of thing happen to me in college. I’d wait until the last minute, bang out the work at the last possible minute, and have it finished by the deadline. That’s how I lived in college. That’s how everyone I knew lived in college.
If they say ‘do 100 hours by May 30th" is it illegal to wait until May to start? It’s not the wisest thing to do, but the guy is only 20 or 21…

Based on the info we have, I’m not that worried (yet). The lack of community service time is frustrating, but not the end of the world — as mentioned, there is time to complete it, so you can’t hold that against him. The real issue is that he reportedly admitted to a cop that he smoked weed, but that just seems screwey. I dunno, for some reason I think this ends up as not a big deal and he either gets his probation extended or conditionally (based on completion of the community service) revoked.

You know, it’s likely the whole blood-letting of last year may have freed Joe to reserve harsh judgement on Bowman. I mean, we haven’t had any problems (ok Odrick got into an argument*) and now Bowman’s having a little problem with his probation. But realistically this is all minor stuff, and it looks like for all purposes the sacrificial lamb worked.
I think Joe not only appeased the problem at the time, but he may have put enough in the bank for a couple minor scrapes in the future too.

Why can't WJAC-TV spell his name right?
Linebacker Navarro Bowman is already on probation for disorderly conduct, stemming from an on campus fight. Court sources tell WJAC that Bowman recently admitted to Centre County probation officials that he has smoked marijuana, at least twice, since December. Plus, Bowman has completed none of the 100 hours of community service that was ordered by the court. A hearing on his probation status is scheduled for this week.
Also if you watch the video here the “journalist” can’t even pronounce his last name right.
Seems fishy to me.

the Collegian’s usually all over it. I’m just saying every one of these reports is “according to WJAC-TV news” and no one else. If I’m going to look for a football source, it isn’t going to be WJAC-TV out of Johnstown.
I’d say it could be a Pitt fan prank, but I don’t know if that’d give them too much credit.

That video is painful,
not just because she said bowe-man over and over again, but because it’s so insanely stereotypical of a local news cast…inflection and everything.

FIghting vs. Drinking vs. Drugs
Interested to see how this all goes down in the Court of Joe. Way too early prediction — Bowman sits out the whole year, redshirts, and comes back to play MLB next year when Lee is gone.
There you go. That’s my trifecta bet.

Prediction
Jamelle Cornley will take Bowman’s spot, will win the Butkus, and will finish second behind Lee for the Bednarik.

I had no idea what
4/20 meant until I just Googled it. Thank you BSD for bringing me up to speed. Now excuse me I have the munchies.

BSD actually taught me about 420 as well
but I think it was back when Evans, Koroma, and Bob Marley had their fiasco. Btw, I don’t celebrate the holiday.

He'll be fine
1] He admitted to smoking pot probably because he would have tested positive. The admission takes a bit of the edge off it and allows his to spin the usage however he wants.
2] My guess is he’ll be explaiing to the Judge exactly how is planning on doing 100 hours of community service in a month tomorrow.
They’ll extend the probaltion another six months to a year, tack on some additional community service time and that will (likely) be that.

Suspend him for the rest of Spring Practice
and make him work his way back up the depth chart.
Navarro could have gone pro, but decided to stay. Joe will remember that and cut him some slack.

If he can show Joe
That he’s willing to bust his ass to make up for his mistakes and that he has really changed, I think he’ll eventually (although not without serious Dog-house implications) be able to show him.
That being said, this still shows, that while we all thought he had matured (and for all we know he has, I think it’s been looked over, that he was honest with the PO, and didn’t try to BS him about the weed, potential drug test or not, but the Comm Service is inexcusable unless he had a serious plan to do it after school was over [I think it was a May deadline?]), but maybe he still has a ways to go.

3 pm Hearing
Court hearings are presumptively open to the public without an extenuating circumstances (or if you are a minor, it is closed). Anyone in the State College area care to take a ride up there and report on what happens for the rest of us?
