Basketball Schedule a little more clear.

This will likely not be a very widely reported subject but there are some new developments in PSU basketball's schedule for next year. Firstly, PSU will be playing at Virginia next season on Monday, Novemember 30th in the first game of the Big 10/ACC challenge. It sucks PSU has to go away two years in a row but now PSU is guaranteed a home game in the BT/ACC challenge after next.

The other positive development is that PSU will be one of the 8 teams in the Charlston Classic to be played from Nov 19th to Nov 22nd. 7 of the 8 teams have been confirmed and they are: USF, Miami, South Caronlina, PSU, UNC-Wilmington, Tulane, LaSalle, and one other team from the Southern Conference. This is a step up from the Philly Classic and hopefully PSU will fair better and gain some decent wins in the OOC.

Not so good

UVA is basically the equivalent of playing at Ga Tech this year. I wish they would’ve got a better opponent than them.

Not too many good teams in that tourney, our best bet is to play Miami.

They still better schedule some other OOC teams to make it look like they are trying to upgrade the schedule.

Disagree

Both of these news bites are clear improvements over last year.

Virginia might be Georgia Tech part II, but it’s unlikely. ACC teams are rarely as bad as Ga Tech was this year and Virginia returns most of their team (I think they lose one starter). They’ll probably be better and a road game against evena middle to lower teir ACC team is no laughing matter. Win that and it’ll be an RPI booster. I’d be more concerned about winning the game that worrying if it would not be good for the schedule strength.

The Charleston Classic is actually a pretty good setup for us. The teams in it are generally decent (except for UNC-Wilmington), but all beatable. Getting some neutral court wins there, especially over teams like Miami (FL) or South Carolina would be very good for our RPI and resume. The Philly Hoops Classic really hurt us last year, as it forced us to play completely awful NJIT and not good Hartford and we lost to the only decent team we played in Rhode Island. This tournament allows for us to get some winnable OOC games in the RPI 50-200 range that we were missing last year.

No way

UVA was terrible last year, and they are predicted to be bad next year too. Just because you bring back starters from a crappy team doesn’t mean that they are now going to be a good team.

“They’ll probably be better” – based on what?

PSU can definitely lose that game but that doesn’t mean it will be a game they can hang their hats on.

And for that tourney, I did mention Miami (and forgot about S Carolina), and those would be the best games for us to play. Everyone else is not going to help our RPI for getting into the tourney if that is the goal. Yeah it is better than the Philly Hoops Classic, but is that really saying much?

My point is that this not what I had hoped for when I was looking for them to seriously improve their schedule. Go on the road against a quality BCS team…what will it hurt?

You don't understand

The problem with our OOC schedule last year was not a lack of “good teams”. It was that the patsies we played were horrible — tons in the RPI 250 or worse range. What we really need to do is avoid the dogs and have the patsies be in the RPI 150-250 range instead. That will get us into the tournament if we can perform similarly in conference (which may or may not happen, but it’s a seperate issue).

The Charleston Classic is far better than the Philly Hoop Classic. Playing NJIT and Hartford were really bad for our RPI. Such terrible games are not going to occur given the field in the Charleston Classic.

The problem with our OOC schedule last year was not a lack of "good teams".

Quite possibly the most ridiculous comment I’ve ever heard. Who are the GOOD TEAMS that PSU played last year in the OOC? Who are the teams that people can say “Wow, that was a quality win.”? There were none. That is why teams like Michigan and Minnesota made the tourney over us even though we split with them and they finished behind us in the B10 standings. The best teams in the RPI last year that we played were Temple and Rhode Island and we lost, and those were the ONLY two in the top 100.

Yes, I agree, the patsies need to be out of the schedule. A BCS conference team shouldn’t be playing anyone worse than 200. But there is no reason why they can’t play a very good school as well. There are countless examples of teams stepping up and doing so…Rutgers played a Home and Home with UNC,Rhode Island and Duquesne went to Duke in recent years, and the list goes on and on.

I UNDERSTAND what you are saying – I just think it is flat wrong. If you want to get all excited playing a team picked to finish #12 in the ACC (according to the other post on this website) or in a tourney with no NCAA teams from last year, have fun. I remember how pissed off I was when they were snubbed when they should have made it last year, if you want to feel the same way next year, this is a great start to the schedule.

I KNOW THAT IT IS ONLY APRIL, and there are plenty of time to schedule more teams, so I hope for the best, my comments are based strictly on the games already announced.

Not positive we pick the ACC team

So there is no use complaining about it. We gotta win, and hope they are decent. Plus it won’t be an easy game with Bennett as their coach now.

the problem with our schedule last year WASN'T a lack of good teams, though

hell, if NJIT was replaced with pretty much anyone from the Charleston Classic, then we probably would have gotten into the NCAA tournament. We were a combination of a SHITTY SHITTY SHITTY OOC schedule, and some mid-major tournament upsets away from being in the NCAA. No one was saying, “Penn State didn’t play a killer OOC schedule” last year, all the complaints were that we were playing a bottom of the basement OOC schedule. Upgrade the OOC to even mediocre, and we were in the NCAA tournament last year.

I think we have to keep in mind

that some of these teams could have some good runs throughout the season and play in some respectable post season games. Who knows, maybe we roll through the Charleston Classic, and we beat Miami and South Carolina, and both make a push for the dance. Sure it’s not the most likely scenario, but Wake Forest was #1 at one point this past season, so I feel like just about anything is possible.

LaSalle

Will make the tournament next year. Mark it down. They have one of the top recruits and their whole team returning. That will be a good win at the end of the year, even though many people won’t see it at the time.

Chester is a horrible area

Then going to school in North Philly is even a step back. Hard to escape trouble for this guy I’m betting.

what about NJIT twice?

I mean that would have to be twice as good, right?

The only issue is...

that would make their RPI 686…
or 171…. i’m not quite sure, ha.
