Eric Thomas On The Rose Bowl Fine
I was going to comment on this but because Eric Thomas and Bill Kline Mark Wogenrich are real life members of the FWAA and find it just as ridiculous as I do, it seems to make more sense for the blogger to defer here.
The headline has BOOMSM all over it, yet Thomas and Kline Wogenrich, both bonafide MSM, are on the reasonable side. Good for them.

Thomas makes a good point
If the majority of the starters were available after the game in the media tent…who the heck cares if the locker room was open or not?!? I get the fine for JoePa avoiding the pregame interview (don’t like it since he had the bum knee at the time, but I get it)….
but seriously, this fine is just stoooopid
OH-FU!!! Movin' back to PA!!!
Thanks
Just a quick point, Mark Wogenrich beat writer of the MCall posted that blurb on Bill Kline’s blog, not to nit-pick. Sometimes it’s tough to tell that, but give Wogey the credit for that one.
Imagine the chaos if PSU goes back to Pasadena for either Jan. 1 or 8th….
I think its funny that PSU is kind of getting painted as "classless" if you will
When USC acted the way they did on the field, how is that OK but an injured old man not giving an interview is so awful? bah

No Name.
All Game.
Just a thought....
Did they try interviewing Joepa up in the booth before the game or were they just pissed that he wouldn’t be available ON the field before the game?
good point
That’s really sad if its true because, come on, Joe Pa is 83 and was still recovering from his hip.
Let's Go State
I was down on the field pregame
To best of my knowledge I don’t remember seeing Joe hanging around down there before kickoff, granted there was a lot going on with former Heisman winners there, two network shows, Pete Carroll acting like a kid horsing around with his team (which was great to see, by the way, love that guy), I’m pretty sure he went straight to the booth.
Unless you have a sideline pass they give you the boot off the sideline about 30 minutes before kickoff, the interview, if there was one, would have been aired just before kickoff, literally seconds before kickoff. ABC knew Joe was going upstairs, he announced it earlier in the week and confirmed on NYE that he was going to coach from upstairs, so unless he blew them off upstairs, I don’t know if they tried to get him up there.
Not to be all Allen Iverson
But we talkin about interviews. Interviews. Not even real games. Interviews.
Soldiers are dying in Iraq, pirates are sailing the open waters, and people have the time & energy to get their panties in a bunch for not being able to film a pre-game speech, or get a meaningless sideline interview (where all coaches reveal nothing ever). I get it’s in the contract, therefore shame on us. But really? This is what people have energy to care about?
We TALKIN about interviews.

Exactly
John L Smith is the only coach I can think of is that should always give a pregame and halftime interview.

Greatest rant ever? Greatest rant ever.
Penn Staters belong at Penn State. The problem with a lot of kids is they just don’t know they are Penn Staters yet.

I have it on my iphone
And was listening to it yesterday evening, laughing my balls off. My future wife couldn’t have been any more bored by it. I tried to explain. I just can’t do it.

It’s just one of those things. Frankly, I don’t see how you couldn’t be amused by it, but whatever.

Or out on a dinghy, of course.

When you’ve created a public persona based on a "holier than thou" attitude — people are going to trip over themselves to try and find a contradiction.
the "grand experiment" is why I love PSU, the flip side is no-one’s perfect and when we trip up or don’t do things exactly the way we’re "supposed" to it’s going to be magnified b/c it’s in direct opposition to our mantra.
"We hugged as grown men do. It was a great moment. Then, it was business as usual." -- LJ Sr.
if anything
not giving (or giving a damn about) interviews fits in pretty well with the Grand Experiment. JoePa never liked all the media attention that college football gets, and wants the players to develop as athletes, students, leaders, and most importantly, people.
Of course, breaking a contract doesn’t quite flow with the whole thing, but this is probably a contract Joe didn’t even know (or care) about.
