Linebackers Get Paterno's Attention
Joe Paterno said yesterday that Bowman had failed two random drug tests administered by the team.
I'm not really sure how I feel about this now. I guess I'd want to know when those tests were, but I'm leaning, though it hurts to say this, Bowman should be off the team.

i disagree
Bowman has not made us proud, but considering the way he’s handled the situation I think he deserves another shot. He’s been honest, remorseful, and has had very difficult circumstances in the last year.
What he did is illegal and embarassing, it’s not an indication he’s a bad person or incapable of learning from his mistakes. He’s being held to the highest standards and falling short, but I don’t think he’s done anything that’s unforgivable.
And let’s not forget, Quarless is still on this team. On the scale of repeated stupidity Quarless is quite a few steps beyond what Bowman is, and he’s still on this team.

Not that this should ever be an excuse to do drugs, and certainly doesn't erase his stupid mistakes
But the kid has gone through a lot in a very short period of time: essentially losing two father figures in a year. It doesn’t excuse what he did, and it’s still wrong, and for all I know he’s using just to party, but if smoking is how he deals with his the trauma of losing those important people in his life, I understand it, but obviously it needs to stop. I don’t smoke or do any drugs, never have, most likely never will despite being a college student, but from personal experience, sometimes the best way to deal with a bad situation is to find an escape from everyday life for a while.
Again, not advocating that everyone who experiences some troubles in their life should go out and smoke weed. I don’t like what he did (aside from his honesty with the PO, which I do think is admirable that he was obviously asked the drug question and admitted to it) but if he’s really struggling with his personal losses, I don’t blame him, but he could definitely find a better and less career damaging way to deal with his personal problems.

Do we ever steer any of these kids into seeking professional help, or is everyone on their own in that regard?

It's probably like Office Hours...
everyone is made aware of them and knows the good that would result from taking advantage yet only like 0.5% take advantage.

If this wasn't Bowman,
and it was some walk-on stiff or a Tom McEowen…we would have no problem saying kick him off the team…

With the exception of Quarless, IMO
I think we all wonder why he’s still on the team after two DUIs and underage drinkings, etc. Not to mention for being so highly touted, he’s basically been a bust the past.

I didn't shed a tear when
“Robin Hood” paid for his stupidy and he was a starter at the time.
For some reason I don’t get the loose canon vibe from Bowman. In this case this is a kid who needs the support of his team and coach. I just hope he doesn’t see JoePa as a father figure.

I'm sure he does
And now that I’ve had a few days to think about it, Joe would be essentially throwing Bowman to the wolves by removing him from the team. Kid’s gone through a lot, he’s from a shitty area, and the two guys who have provided him any semblance of structure in his life both died recently.
You gonna send a kid back to that for getting high twice? That said, he absolutely has to know that he’s hanging by a thread right now.

I bet
Joe makes a deal with him. Something like if he does all his community service by the end of August he will only be suspended 2 games instead of 4.
