Massaro Tears ACL
And will miss the 2009 season. I'm getting really tired of reading things like this every off-season. It's the devastation of it, really. And the time, a year is a long time.
Pete would have been a big help on a D-line that appears strong but unproven, and now somewhat thin. With a green secondary getting pressure is going to be paramount.

Depth chart
does anyone know where massaro was slotted on the Depth Chart and who steps up in his place
yeah
I didn’t want to suggest that he tore his ACL in the open thread, but it was pretty obvious they way they helped him off the field.
What’s worse is I was in the stadium both times Hayes tore his ACL, and the second time I felt like crying — it was heart wrenching…

Hayes’s second injury was one of the saddest things I have ever seen. No bullshit there.

Speaking of Hayes
Does he have to wait till after this season to apply for an extra year of eligibilty or can he do it ahead of time?

I felt the same way.
It was quoted that Sean Lee was in tears for him when it happened (being entirely serious). To go through that twice has got to be horrible beyond belief.

How is Hayes and Devon Still? Did they suit up on Saturday?

I saw Still playing
Dunno about Hayes.

So far
Still is fine and has been in the DT rotation. I believe Still got some game time late last season. Hayes says he is feeling great but they kept from playing in the game to play it safe.

3-4
I’d hate to move away from the topic at hand… (Massaro get well!) however… do we need to start thinking about moving to a 3-4! I know everytime I bring this up people shoot it down, but seriously… shouldn’t this be somewhere on the radar.
For one, aren’t most NFL teams looking for 3-4 ready players to begin with? Secondly, aren’t we already using a hybrid 3-4, so what the hell is the difference if we start using 2 DT and rotate in the DE or OLB?
I hate to see Massaro or any of our guys get injured… lets cover our weakness in depth in DL with strength we have in the LB corp.
Well...
It’s doubtful we’d go to an actual 3-4, but I’m sure they’re considering using someone like Nate Stupar as a “stand up” DE (in the same way they used Tim Shaw during his senior season).
There’s also a good chance you’ll see Odrick playing some DE with Ogbu and Koroma as the DTs.
Not this year
While some may believe that Ware and Odrick would fit the mold for DL in a 3-4 the rest of the guys just aren’t up to it I don’t think. A scheme change requires different recruiting. I like that they tried Odrick at DE because it spreads out the talent without changing the scheme. LBs also have different responsibilities in a 3-4 and it’s probably too late to change anything.
Bottom line is that PSU doesn’t have the time or personnel to change to a 3-4. The best they can do if there is a DE problem is to rotate more mobile DTs to the edge. I also think that Okoli could work out there because while he has added a lot of weight he used to play DE and is pretty mobile.
