Crystal Ballin': Too Early To Look Ahead To '09-10?

Just taking a look at the roster and what we'll have for next season.  We're going to get a lot bigger.  Pringle (6'1") and Cornley (6'4") are going to be gone, likely to be replaced by a combination of Babb (6'5"), Woodyard (6'5") and Tim Frazier (6'2") in the backcourt, and a combination of Jeff Brooks (6'8"), the Sw'Otter (6'10"), Billy Oliver (6'8"), David Jackson (6'6"), and Sasa/Sushi (6'9") in the frontcourt.

Pringle's quickness with the ball is going to be tough to replace, as will his high 3-pt%, although I suspect that Frazier will help with the former and Babb/Woodyard with the latter.  As for Cornley, you can't replace that type of leadership, but Battle will do his best.  I wouldn't be completely shocked if PSU struggled a bit in the early part of the schedule, assuming they actually go out and schedule some decent non-con competition (although playing in this NIT has done wonders for guys like Andrew Jones, Babb, and even Jeff Brooks, who was hustling his balls off last night at MSG).  By the time the conference schedule rolls around, they should be ready to roll.

Any other way-too-early thoughts on next season?

If this team is one and done in the NIT

I don’t think they would go into the season quite as good. The experience and confidence that Brooks, Jackson, Jones, and really the whole team will translate in the offseason and into next season. I mean Brooks’ turnover would have taken him out of the next play earlier in the year but instead he runs the floor and gets a block. Brooks needs to add more weight and work on his shot and getting into the paint. I think Brooks could be the difference in the team’s post season destination next year.

Jones has looked fantastic, playing complete games in just about every NIT. He could also stand to add 5-10 lbs to completely finish his frame. Whatever he and coach Preston have been doing needs to keep happening. I think he’ll be a leading contributor on both sides of the ball. He’s shown that he can stand with guys taller than him.

Jackson I think is a darkhorse to fill a Cornley type role. He’s been pretty good under the rim and really gives it up for boards and baskets. He isn’t as vocal as Cornley but an increased role next year could take him there. He also was hitting better from outside the last few games.

Babb played exactly like most people thought he would this year. He probably should have gotten some more minutes in the beginning of the season, but in his time he showed some ability to hit the long ball and he had a few good drives. In his second year in the offseason he won’t have to learn the ropes of D1 basketball, and can focus more on improving his game. If he improves his D and his ability to drive he’ll be a great asset.

Ott and Woodyard remain mystery’s to me. They both will improve but I think they’ll be decent role players for next season.

Frazier is supposed to be quick and I hope his role is to spell Battle to save him for games later in the season. He’s a pure PG that is good at driving and other PG stuff but he doesn’t have the outside game Talor does. Hopefully he’ll get 10-15 minutes in some earlier blowouts, but knowing ED he probably won’t. He’s just a freshman so who knows how he’ll really do.

Oliver, Sasa, and Marshall are complete mysteries. Oliver has at least been practicing with the team for awhile so he’s ahead of the curve. Marshall is coming off an injury but he’s also supposed to be good, but again, who knows? A lot of people are clamoring for Sasa to get a lot of playing time, but remember, Big guys always take a little longer to develop and Euros always take a little longer to develop. He has been playing in America which is a plus but combine those two things I’m not counting on him for much.

After seeing this NIT run I think this team has a much better chance to be on the bubble again than I would have thought after the BTT. Depending on the schedule and how good the rest of the B10 is I don’t think the bubble is completely out of the question. Hopefully PSU can build some confidence and beat enough teams to make the tourney. Even a one and done in the tourney would pay dividends IMO for the team two years from now when they are senior laden and talent laden with good depth. Plus Buie will be on that team.

That’s what she said?

Penn Staters belong at Penn State. The problem with a lot of kids is they just don’t know they are Penn Staters yet.

DJ

If he can continue to hit his jumpers, along with his hustle and good bball IQ, he can be a 10+ PPG guy, adding 6 or 7 rebs and a handful of assists. Good versatility, good hustle, good player.

I was impressed with how other guys stepped up when Cornley was hurt

We seemed to play better as a team for that game and a half. When you have someone who is as good a player and as vocal a leader as Cornley, it may have led to some the younger guys not taking shots or just kind of waiting around for he or the guards to shoot/make a move.
It is going to be very interesting to see the team’s chemistry next year, and I expect jackson, brooks, babb, and jones to each step it up a notch and hopefully have a more rounded scoring team. Babb is a much better defender than Morissey, and overall we are going to be as athletic as this years team. I just hope that they hit the pizza shop and pack on some weight also.

This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope.
