PSU D-line too much for offense in early scrimmage

Saturday Scrimage

Penn State is rebuilding an offensive line that lost three first-team All-Big Ten choices to graduation.

By the time the Big Ten season rolls around next falll, the unit might be solid enough to hold its own.

But in early April, working against Penn State's top two defensive lines in a coaches clinic scrimmage today inside Holuba Hall, it was no contest.

The Lions' defense, particularly its front, stole the show. And it figures to be that way for the remainder of the spring sessions, which conclude with the April 25 Blue-White game at Beaver Stadium.

Head coach Joe Paterno did the smart thing, too. Starting quarterback Daryll Clark, a returning first-team All-Big Ten choice, worked in drills but saw few snaps during the contact scrimmage. Even wearing the red jersey (hands-off) Clark might not have been safe.

His backups, true freshman Kevin Newsome and Matt McGloin, certainly were not. The pressure created by PSU's best defensive linemen -- tackle Jared Odrick and end Jack Crawford really stood out -- made it difficult for the QBs to set up in even a 3-step drop.

Paterno held out linebacker Sean Lee (knee), defensive end Jerome Hayes (knee) and running backs Stephfon Green (ankle) and Brent Carter (knee).

There were few surprises. Senior Knowledge Timmons started at the one cornerback spot opposite A.J. Wallace and sophomore Andrew Dailey -- listed as a linebacker on the roster -- worked at one of the safety spots along with Drew Astorino.

Jared Odrick and end Jack Crawford are going to be great this year.
