Too early for this kind of talk?
If you're the superstitious type then i would say don't read on cuz i'm about to jinx the hell out of Royster.
Looking at the numbers I think that Evan Royster is a shoe in to leave State College with the most career rushing yards and has a good chance to take the career TD record too. The records currently stand at 3398 yards by Curt Warner and 38 rushing TD's by Lydell Mitchell. Evan is sitting at 1749 and 17 TD's with 2 years left to play (assuming he doesn't leave early for the NFL).
I think we are going be witnessing history every time he carries the ball. Each carry will bring him several steps closer to those records.

I'd say yes, probably too early to talk about it
However, he’s a great running back, and I think he has the skills to break those records. The only problem is that it seems like the coaches are protecting him by splitting his time with Green. He had a ridiculous YPC last season, but the fewest carries of (I believe) any back in the Big10. If he keeps up that YPC, I guess it won’t matter how many carries he gets, and he’ll break the records.
I understood why they split time last season, trying to get Green some experience up the middle, but I wanted to see them keep Royster in for the game. I guess that’s the downside of having so much talent at RB right now, they protect their starters more with the extra talent. Maybe I’m just spoiled from Tony Hunt, who was never really replaced while he played. You knew right where he was going, the problem was he couldn’t be stopped (see: Outback Bowl vs. Tenn.). Royster is more of a shifty, speedy RB than the slam it up the middle back that Tony was.

I’m expecting him to get more carries this year with Williams, Butler, and Norwood all gone.

By the way
Are you doubting Zug’s ability to pick up the slack from Williams, Butler, and Norwood?

Serious face
Zug can’t keep defenses on their toes like WBN did. I don’t think the receivers will be that bad, but we’re certainly going to need more production out of Royster.

Yeah I know
I’m kidding you about Zug, although I do expect us to be underestimated in our receiving corp. Royster is going to be the our key player for success this year. Clark is going to be protected, so his running plays will be down for sure.

YPC
I think when you loose 3 all-big ten linemen you generally suffer a bit in the YPC category. However I feel like Royster should get more chances this season so I still think he’ll be 1000+ back this year. That would leave him sitting at 2700+ yards and a meer 700 yards away going into his senior year.

Yeah I forgot about the O-line
But if there’s one thing thats impressed me the most about Royster is his patience to find the hole, no matter how small. That’s where his strength really lies, I’d say he’s more agile, but not as strong as Tony Hunt, but still able to take/deliver hits to get those few extra yards like TH used to do. So even with a less experienced line, I think he’s still going to put up descent if not very good numbers this year.

You cant really leave one like that open...you know better!
His patience to find the hole no matter how small.
Royster is no Zug in that department sir.

I looked this same thing up today, but didn’t Warner (or someone…) have 3700 yds, not 3300? I believe Hunt had 3500-some. I think Royster needs about 1600-1700 yds for the record.

Warner had 3,398 career yards, 1st all-time at PSU
Tony Hunt had 3,320, 2nd all-time

Funny
LJ Jr racked up 2,000+ yards in one season. Imagine if he’d had another season under his belt.

Doubtful
Royster should leave for the NFL if he plays as well as he did last season and stays healthy — and he’d be a fool to turn down NFL money for another year on what will certainly be a rebuilding year for this offense.
Plus I’m pretty stoaked about Green getting the spotlight and Royster leaving early would certainlly give Green a great shot.
I guess for me, I’d rather see Royster shine in the NFL and not risk a season/career ending injury.

but think about how much better
PJ would be if he had, perhaps, the best RB in the nation lining up behind him.

I don’t like kids (Sorry, JoePa moment there) leaving for the pros early anyway, and unless Green figures out to run between the tackles by then we’ll need him. Royster seems to me like someone who would stay, but that’s just an uninformed gut feeling.
Career ending injuries can happen in the pros too. If you don’t have a degree, you could end up working in a garage door factory in Russia, Ohio like Curtis Enis.

i feel the same
He seems to me like a guy that would stay. Ki-jana is the back you wanted to reference when talking about failed pro careers, he got hurt, Enis went crazy.

My post is pretty much worthless now that I remember that Royster redshirted his first year. Doh!

Enis had a knee injury in ’98, and then more problems with it in ’00. I think.

Well getting hurt in the NFL after getting paid $5-7 million isn’t such a bad deal. A smart kid with good people around him could make that money last a lifetime. Plus he’s already been in school 3 years, next year will be his 4th — there’s a solid chance he could graduate by then anyway.
My point is, this guy has worked his butt off and done incredible things for this program and for this team: I’m happy enough to see him move on early and make some NFL money.
Plus Green, Beachum, Carter, Dukes, and others are all in line right now. I love the excitement of a new RB.

Leaving early.
I agree with what you are saying in principle, alot of things will line up nicely for Royster to leave early. However i dont think there will be the type of buzz around him at the end of the upcoming season that there is likely to be after his senior campaign. We will likely return 3 starting O-linemen for 2010.
I think it would be smarter for him to stay the full 4 years and break the record and use the press that will bring to help earn him more money.

Royster
he’s definitely got a future in the NFL, but he may not think it’s worth it to go if he’s not going to be a 1st or 2nd round pick. There are just so many more good RBs that go into the draft every year.

Will 2010 be a rebuilding year on offense?
Sure, we have to break in a new QB but we did fine breaking in new QBs in 2005 and 2008. Assuming we don’t have too many players leave early (which we usually don’t), we should be loaded with experience at every other position except for tight end.

exactly my point
i think 2009 will be more of a rebuilder than ’10

Witnessing History
Aren’t we really witnessing history every time anybody carries the ball? I mean, every play we watch, we’re witnessing history, right?
You all just witnessed History by reading this post from me. Gradulations.

Like you can get 2 points for something in vb.
