Power Rankings
Rivals has their post-spring power rankings by position and coaches. We're represented pretty well. I'd like to see Wiz on the OL list and I can't agree with Beamer being ranked ahead of JoePa, but overall not too bad.

That list is BS
Where is Zug!?!!?!?!
How could Nixon know so little about Watergate and so much about football ?

Zug was a given
That list is a ranking of every normal human football player.

Also
I call BS on the Emu for being ranked #14 for QBs, as well as the rest of the Domers on the list. Is there something we missed last season from ND? Because I’m pretty sure this is essentially the same team that lost to Syracuse last year, and has somehow managed to BS a schedule worse than ours.
And where’s Jeremy Boone for special teams?

Wow
Galen Hall 2nd best offensive coordinator in the country.
I guess Galen should get more credit, but am I the only one shocked to see him that high?

Well
Most likely since we don’t have a real OC, just two guys who split time, they didn’t know that and put down the older guy.

Here's what I think happened
He’s kinda like Kizer Soze. His legend is born out of the fact that nobody’s ever seen Galen(at least not on the recruiting trail).
by RNF18 on May 15, 2009 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just realized why
It’s one thing to be Ohio State with 5-star kids at every position and be successful. But our all-B10 QB and all-B10 RB are 2-star and 3-star recruits, respectively. Our leading WR from last season was a walk-on. A big reason we’re competing at such a high level is coaching.

I think it's a few things
Our kids have more character, our coaches are very good, and we have a tradition of overachieving which helps us when things get tight and the game is on the line.
A lot of these 5 star types have been so blown up their whole lives that they have never had to handle adversity so when it comes they panic or choke. Our coaches do a great job at finding character kids whether they’re 5stars or 2stars.
by RNF18 on May 15, 2009 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not to mention
You’re a five star kid, and you’re either all you’re supposed to be, or you’re considered a bust. The “underrated” athletes have the benefit of being able to become something out of nothing. Sean Lee was a three-star recruit, now he’s going to be our starting linebacker (and at PSU, that is saying a great deal) and is considered one of the best linebackers in the country.

Odrick
has one job to perform this year, as does most of the team. He’ll have 9weeks to outnastily prepare himself for an epic battle with Boren on 11/7. I thought their Oline was plenty dirty/nasty in last year’s game in the shoe, but all you hear from their writers is how disappointed they were with that unit’s underperformance.
Jarod can remain off anybody’s lists all year as far as I’m concerned, as long as he gets the best of boren and brewster that day.

Sorry, mate
Epic battle. I’ll believe that when I see it.
All Boren has to do is grab and hold on. No one calls holding in this league.
The pro scouts will love it if Odrick smashes through anyway, as he did a couple of times last year.

Odrick will be
double-teamed on most plays – especially to that side. When he is not…it will likely be a run/option to the other side. All this does is open it up for the rest in our 4 – 3…
Between Koroma, Lattimore, Latham, Crawford…they are posed to give the O-lines fits…so then, in steps our LB’s…
When the D-line gets a breather; in steps whom?…Stills (who is getting huge), Ware, J Hayes…not quite what O-lines would see as a “breather” for them…

I'm glad I'm not the only one
to realize how absolutely overrated they were all year last year, especially after their deceivingly “good” schedule that included powerhouses like Clemson and Georgia (who, if I remember right went on to do great things with the rest of their seasons, right?). They never should have been #1 for as long as they were #1, and their obliteration at the end of the season goes proves that.

Ohio St..
As much as I try to avoid discussing them… if you look at those rankings, Ohio St. doesn’t appear too too much on the lists. I get that these rankings are crap anyway but MSM controls the flow of erroneous information to the uninformed masses (I’m looking at you AP voters that only watch 1 or 2 games per weekend). So whether we like it or not, lists like this can have an impact on perception.

Let the Clark Heisman discussion begin?
So, since the Heisman has become a QB contest and DC-17 is ranked number 6 does that mean he has a shot?
by markpsu on May 14, 2009 11:15 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I'm hoping
our next Heisman contender will be Royster quite frankly, not that Clark doesn’t deserve it or anything, but mainly for the awesome coincidence that our two Heisman winners both wore #22, and that Royster kicks ass.

I was still a young PSU fan at the time (and not the best time to be a PSU fan), so I barely remember any of those games in the early 2000s, let alone the heisman race, other than I knew LJ was up there in votes and didn’t win it.

#2 in 2002
is further proof non-qbs should just give that dream up.
I think DC17 will get knocked out b/c of the non-conf. While all these other contenders are playing in prime-time matchups, we’ll be lining up cup cakes. Then when you look at his stats they will be discredited because of said cup cakes and the now tried and true practice of discrediting the entire BT conference during these types of discussions.
In addition, I don’t really give a shit.

You know what...
I agree with that point.
I’ll take the hype to have BOTH Clark & Royster getting on people’s/voters “lists”…as of right now, IMO – it would be a real brain teaser if they were not.
As stated many times “over the years now, here on BSD”…the last time we had multiple players on peoples Heisman lists…’94/95 season, where basically Collins / Carter combo “stole” votes from eachother anyway.
IMO – let DC-17 just play like DC-17…same for ‘Rolls. PSU historically does not get the Heisman love anyway…so don’t get your hopes up now – or for that matter – as the season progress and they perform up to their capabilities. Just perform as a team… I bet that neither one of them would want that trophy – over an undefeated season and a bowl win.

Personally, I want Sean Lee to win the 2009 Heisman.
Who else would be better as the first pure defensive player to win it? Let Tebow & the other QB’s split the first place votes. Lee gets all the second place votes & wins the award. How cool would that be?

Certainly cool...
“IF” Tebow / FL offensive play calling is like last year, AND McCoy/Bradford perform = to last year…that definately will make the historical “QB” voter-lover queer’s fit to be tied…and thus lessen the individual tally’s…and provide “another position” to rise.

"Powa Rankings"
…should have had a caveat for the RB’s here…looks like this was thrown together simply based on stats…no forward thinking. In steps Royster…
#13; your kidding me; right?!
Again, because of the “HD” variety; “I” do not see him getting significantly more touches…I just don’t. The 1st (3) games or so he will be pulled – like last year…and Clark will too, in an effort to get KN some live-time to shore-up the #2 spot…as well as saving bodies.
Hereagain; in steps Green and Beachum…not what a defense will view as a rest. Newsome will grow some quick confidence here too; having the time to play with “stars” around him…he WILL get into the groove.

and his fragile psyche isn’t around anymore so Paterno may be more inclined to give him most of the second half against EIU, Cuse, and Akron.

I'm joking
about Little Red. I’m happy we have what looked at the BW game as a very capable backup QB, but I think the only time he’ll see the field is those late 4th qt. moments, like you said. Not to mention us probably having PJ next year to back up KNew.

Special Teams
I do not see a drop-off for PSU here…in fact, IMO perhaps…we should shine.
We have speed (Chaz? Wallace? Smith? Beachum? – perhaps a healthy Carter too) DWheels just made me too nervous with the ball handling sometimes.
We can tackle (Mauti, Stupar, Colasanti) should ALL remain as starters here…rest Bowman.
We should still kick and punt efficiently too.
