What It Means To Be A Penn Stater
Hey guys. I need your help again.
This time I'm writing an article about what it means to be a Penn Stater. For the article I want to pool a bunch of fan reactions and assemble them to kind of give the pulse of Nittany Nation. That's where you all come in.
In two, three, or four sentences give me your opinion about what it means to be a Penn Stater. If you want your quote to be considered you have to keep your answers concise as I don't have room for a dissertation. I'm just looking for quick sound bytes.
I plan on using direct quotes in the article, so if you would like your real name to be used please include it with your comment. I would also like to know your city and state, and if you went to Penn State, what year you graduated. If you're not comfortable using your real name don't give it and I'll just use your BSD alias, but then your friends will never believe it's you, so there.
I need a lot of quotes since they are going to make up the bulk of the article. So please take a moment to participate and don't be afraid to interject a little humor.
So again, what does it mean to you to be a Penn Stater? Include name, location, and year graduated (if applicable).
Thanks.
Thanks for the fanpost! Please do not post any content from a premium site that requires a subscription. Also, if you just want to share a link, quote, or video, please consider using fanshots instead. Thanks.

Penn Staters are all family. But being a Penn Stater ts also about your own family. Die-hard Penn State families have have least 10 members (Gparents, Father-Mother, Aunt-Uncle, Siblings, Cousins, Married Relatives, etc.) in them.
Old School …. this is a quote from Ralph Dorn Hetzel, Tenth president of the Pennsylvania State University, serving from 1927 until 1947.
The Penn State spirit is not measured by vocal capacity, mob violence, or demonstration of emotional unrestraint, but instead “has the quality of unswerving loyalty to the highest ideals and objectives of the College.”
Mob violence?

I honestly think about this a lot.
Being a Penn Stater is a critical part of my identity. I’d say it goes God – family – Penn State… but Penn State is family. I remember asking about the “We are… Penn State” cheer as a child and being told that Penn State isn’t just the football team… it’s all of us; we’re all equally important members of the Penn State family. I truly believe and cherish that.

I live in Chicago where there aren’t a ton of Penn Stater’s and my non-Penn State friends have said more than once that “Penn State is like a cult”. And while I don’t think I was brainwashed, there is definitely something special (albeit unquantifiable) about the Penn State experience that makes us love our alma mater and want to be with other Penn Staters to a greater degree than any other school.

Being a Penn Stater , as a fan, means losing yourself every saturday during the fall, it means waking up on those crisp cool mornings and being a part of something bigger, a group, a team, a nation. It’s learning how to tailgate when you are 7 years old, it’s yelling out in a crowd of strangers WE ARE…and knowing who your friends are by the response you get.

Being a Penn Stater is...
the trees that line the mall on a crisp fall day. It’s eating a grilled sticky (ala mode, of course), at the College Diner at 2 a.m. It’s seeing 55,000 fans screaming “WE ARE” on the east side of Beaver Stadium and then seeing another 55,000 fans screaming “PENN STATE” on the west. It’s actually knowing the God damn words to the alma mater. It’s tailgating and buying a Peachy Paterno at the Creamery. It’s feeding a squirrel and then doing it again. It’s walking past the obelisk at midnight and passing on the myths of its existence to the next generation of students. It’s tradition, its legend, it’s family.

My wife and extended non PSU family think we are all crazy, there is something very special about PSU/State College that unless you been there, you can’t explain.
I only was in State College for 3 years as a student but have been going there since birth for games, I spent most summers there, and a few New Years. I feel more at home there than anywhere else, I lived in NYC/NJ/DC/MD/ and grew up in NEPA…Happy Valley is where my soul is…I love that town.

I’ve been thinking all day of some eloquent way to explain the Penn State mystique, and I can’t think of anything better than that. But then I figured, why bother trying to explain it, just enjoy being a part of it. The one thing that always impresses me about Penn State people is that whenever you meet one, it doesn’t matter where you’re from, or if you’re a doctor or a plumber, or if you’re a Phillies fan or a Mets fan, you’re automatically friends.

Too long (and too cheesy)
When I was a kid, going to the game wasn’t really a privilege; it was never do your homework, or no Penn State game. It was our family time; more like church than a leisure activity. When I was 17 and couldn’t talk to my parents about anything, there was Penn State. It’s the tie that I have with my family, and a larger community beyond that. At the end of the day, the game is just the reason you call your Dad, or your college buddy, but it’s the call, not the football that is what’s important.
I recently got divorced; my Wife was concerned about who would have custody of our son on Easter. I was concerned about who would have him Blue/White Weekend. That just about sums it up for me.

To me being a Penn Stater is all I have ever known. It’s more than just cheering for the Blue and White on Saturdays. It’s about cheering for the Blue and White any day of the week, whatever the event. It’s about cheering for JoePa on Saturdays and then sitting in his library on Sunday. It’s about stepping on the floor of the BJC raising your diamond to the sky. It’s about having thousands of people in your corner and you don’t even know it. Being a Penn State Fan is Important
It’s really freakin important in my life. It’s important to my wife, who married into it and embraces it lovingly. It’s important to my mother, who as a young single woman continued to bring three little boys to games by herself. It was important to my grandfather who played ball for Rip Engle and who sent his daughters to university there. It was important to my Ole Man, who found it one of his favorite places and reasons to party.
And for my brothers and me, being a Penn State fan is deep down at the core of our bond. It means an opportunity to discuss the merits and flaws of the second string left guard or the walk-on safety. It means always having a Shangri-La to retreat to together, a place to enjoy the fun of gathering the fam or the lads for the most excellent tailgating scene in all the land. It means, for even yet another year, getting to watch Joseph Vincent Paterno lead his classy team of blackshoe warriors onto the field. It means appreciating all this and hoping, the Good Zug willing, that our sons or daughters will grow to appreciate and enjoy this same Love and Tradition that we share.

Being a Penn Stater
Being a Penn Stater means learning to do things the right way, even if it is the hard way, and then naming the library after the person who taught you that lesson. It means keeping your head up high and wearing blue and white even following crushing defeats (possibly because those are the only colors you bother to own). It means that just like in real life there are no names on our jerseys, that the best way to succeed is to work as a team, and that you will always be a part of one of the biggest, proudest, and most fiercely loyal teams in the country. It means just what it says: We Are Penn State!

I'll give it a shot.
Being a Penn Stater means you became a part of a bigger family, with a matriarch/patriarch you’ve probably never met, yet you know JoePa and SuePa about as well as your own family. It means the color red, Panthers, and Seminoles make you angry. It means you’ve had your own pitcher of Yuengling at the Phyrst, made friends over Canyon Pizza at 230 am, and stayed at least one night in East Halls (for one reason or another). It means you’ve made friends so close, it’s hard to imagine how you lived without them. It means you’ve got a backlog of 150 years of alumni that would be willing to help you get a job, get to a game, or even just feed you as you wander trying to find a tailgate. It’s a family, it’s possibly a cult, but you always know that it’s where you belong.

Pride...
is my one word answer. Since a lion is PSU’s mascot, it seems appropriate.
While we each represent the university through our actions, our athletic teams are more visible than most of us and their tradition of honorable success is what sets Nittany Lions apart.
We, more than any other school’s alums & fans, use that honorable success as a central rally cry. It brings us together. It’s why BSD has more posters than the other 10 Big10 blogs combined. It’s why you can be 3000 miles away from UPark and can yell We ARE and you’ll get PENN STATE in return rather than blank, open mouthed stares.

I love that you have multiple rooms that are blue and white in your house. When I started college, I wanted to redo my bedroom (which at that point, I was 18 years old and still had the sky baby boy blue color from when I was a baby with the same cars and trucks ceiling border wall paper), so I chose a dark PSU blue (the ceiling and the trim around the windows were already white), and my mother was freaking out about having a room in the house painted a dark color.

Being a Penn Stater
means that all your good stories start, this one time at Penn State…
Being a Penn Stater means.....
being a ten year old in front of grandma’s tiny black and white television watching Marino and Pitt go down 48-14! And to this day……………the obsession continues!

Being a Penn Stater means….
Feeling sick to your stomach every fall Saturday prior to kickoff, going anywhere and finding family, and looking into your closet and seeing nothing but blue shirts…

What it means
Being a Penn Stater means trying to describe why it makes you so happy to see another car with Penn State paraphernalia. It means explaining why sometimes you might beep your horn to greet the person in the other car. Even in Pennsylvania. Even on Route 322.
there's someone that lives somewhat near me in East Lansing
that has PA plates and PSU stickers that I see on occasion on the way to campus. I always try to honk at her and wave her down, but she never looks around.

My wife now
Growls the lion roar whenever she sees a magnet or PSU license plate here or in Virginia.
When I say to a kid, ‘Hey, get ready to get knocked on your rear end,’ I also tell him, ‘Learn. Learn why you got knocked on your rear end.
I prefer
for this to occur on the highway, so I don’t have to try to turn the wheel past my washington monument if you know what I mean. wink, wink.

"From the outside looking in, you cannot understand it. From the inside looking out, you cannot explian it."
maybe you are talking about me?
I just graduated from law school at MSU this May and drive a Penn State blue car with PA plates and lots of PSU stickers. I’m a horrible driver, so it makes sense I didn’t look around when someone was honking at me. :)
What it means to be a Penn Stater:
It means smiling anytime you hear or see something Penn State related.

Then how the hell did you end up a Yankees fan??

grew up in northeast Jersey until I was 12/13
and my dad still has season tix. Wasn’t much of a fan of anything other than baseball until I moved to PA, so that’s why the rest of my alliegances are with Philly teams.

Ah ok
I understand that. I was just hoping you didn’t become a Yankees fan because the Phils sucked so much in the 90s. Then, that would suck.

hmm
I might know who that is. I know an attractive young woman thats a undergrad from PSU that works and lives in East Lansing.
Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.
Being a Penn Stater
means that once you step foot on campus, you and your family become Penn Staters. My family had no ties to Penn State when I chose to go, but once I was there, the blue and white bled through them, especially my old man (may he rest in peace).

What it means to be a Penn Stater
For me, being a Penn Stater means being THE prime example of college sports fans to the rest of the universe. Ok, maybe I exaggerate a bit, but Penn Staters have stuck by their teams through the ups and downs, the good and the bad, on and off the field and court. There aren’t a lot of other fan communities out there that have accomplished that.
