Sooo, for those who can stomach recruiting updates this early in the year... Maryland DT Anthony Ferguson (Not Ego Ferguson) is set to make his decision this Sunday, and its down to PSU and Iowa. I like our chances, but mostly because I would never understand why someone would choose Iowa period... In other news, Corey Brown (Pa. RB, Cardinal O'Hara) has narrowed his list to 10 and PSU made the cut.... K I'm done now...

Seriously
I think everyone, myself included, is looking for anything to dull the pain of the offseason.
I know...
at least Mike said he doesn’t post too much of irecruiting news on here, because its silly to follow around 17 year olds and write about their every move. He’s right, but the news is the only thing that gets me through the offseason. I would love to at least see a weekly or every other week piece on what moves we’re making, who’s been offered and such. I get that from Audibles but I feel like people would appreciate it on here as well.
I was out in the trenches, which enables me to paint such a powerful picture, like Apocalypse Now.-Cormega
Also...
Nittanynetwork.com, an espn affiliate or something, has really good recruiting info. About as close as you can get without paying for it with one of the big sites.
I was out in the trenches, which enables me to paint such a powerful picture, like Apocalypse Now.-Cormega
It's a mixed bag, really.
None of us really like covering recruiting, for a variety of reasons. We always put up a post when somebody commits, obviously. Could we do a semi-regular feature about outstanding offers and other updates? Yeah, I guess. But those types of things are so murky when it comes to actual facts (Does the kid have an offer? Verbal? Written? Drawn in the dirt?). Then it’s a slippery slope into, “well, Player X ”http://nittanynetwork.com/index.php?option=com_jfusion&Itemid=3&thread=300" >narrowed his list down to 10 schools, and we’re one of them!" territory. And while we’ve done one or two of those types of stories (Forcier’s recruitment rings a bell), I’ll sooner shoot myself in the face before writing another one.
I’d agree that we could do a little more with respect to recruiting, but between you and me and the internet, each of us is so busy with jobs / family / trying to have a life that recruiting news is pretty low on the priority list. And by “low,” I mean “not on the list at all.” But we’ll take it under advisement. Promise.

recruiting news
is a vague, sick little enterprise I’d rather not see this site get mixed up in. You guys do the perfect amount of it, which is to basically ignore it until a kid commits.
While I know BSD’ers are then likely to go to other sites for their information, it’s probably better anyway — simply because in recruiting there’s really no substance in any of these stories. You guys come away smelling like roses bacon when you keep at arms length from all the hype and speculation. Let those other sites handle the twisted business of stalking young boys.
On the other hand, I do really like the kind of analysis you guys do of the depth chart, what positions we need to go after, what pressing issues we’ll face in 4 years based on our personel.

who's doing what?
My predictions:
you – starting a family
me – jobs (only because I don’t have to try to have a life, thank you very much, and starting a family…we’re a long way off from that
internet – trying to have a life (if the internet is trying to become alive like Johnny 5 in Short Circuit, then good. On the other hand, if it is trying to become Skynet, then BAD BAD BAD. On the other hand I suppose you could just be referring to the usual people on the internet, then yes, finding a life = good)

Personally, I believe Penn State is the team to beat for the following Rivals.com-rated four-star prospects: quarterback Barry Brunetti from University School in Memphis, Tenn., offensive lineman Khamrone Kolb (6-6, 300) from Lake Braddock High School in Burke, Va., tight end Kevin Halpea (6-4, 235) from North Hunterdon Regional High School in Annandale, N.J., defensive lineman Kyle Baublitz Central York High School in York, Pa., defensive lineman Sharrif Floyd from George Washington High School in Philadelphia, defensive end/linebacker Dakota Royer from Manheim Central High School in Manheim, Pa., linebacker Khairi Fortt from King & Low Heywood Thomas High School in Stamford, Conn., athlete Alex Kenney from State College, Pa., and fullback/linebacker Zach Zwinak from Linganore High School in Frederick, Md.

nice
I know it’s arbitrary, but it goes against the trend where PSU verbals usually slip in the ratings once they’ve given their decision. If Shariff Floyd comes our way (I really hope he does) we could be looking at 3 5-star prospects in the class and a boat-load of 4-stars. May be on of the best classes ever.

I don't know the siren rules
Does becoming a 5 star player mean that your siren for being a 4 star recruit is null and void and you need another one?
Also, I know it means nothing, but look at our “score” compared to other schools on Scout. We’re #7 right now already, and we’ve only had 5 commits (just for comparison U$C is 10th with 7 commits). I’m really looking forward to seeing this class take shape.

Scout Rankings
5 Recruits, all within the Scout 300, with 8ish more months before LOI day? This is shaping up to be a damn good class, and with the class we just brought in, the next few years promise to be quite good. A BSD MNC class trip in the future?
With all of this good news, can anyone let me know who/when is next? I was looking at this list and was wondering who we have a good/reasonable/no shot at, and if anyone had any news on when decisions would be made.

How's this for a compromise
We’ll have a running Fanpost every month for everyone to contribute recruiting news and links. For June, we’ll use this thread (I’ll probably re-name it to make it a bit more obvious). Now, here’s where you come in. Rec this post in order to bump it into the “Recommended FanPosts” section of the front page. As the month wears on, we’ll have ourselves a nice little recruiting thread.
This way, we’ll have more recruiting news, more community involvement, and your friendly BSD triumvirate won’t have to really wade too far into the recruiting muck. The only rule would be that there’s no copying and pasting from premium articles, because that’s, like, totally not cool.
Deal?

Here's what makes me nervous
I never want to step on the toes of FOS, and so when discussing recruiting on BSD I don’t want to be divulging Premium info. It’s kind of a fine line between hinting and just stealing info.
"From the outside looking in, you cannot understand it. From the inside looking out, you cannot explian it."

We'll work out the details with time...
…as far as what is okay and what isn’t, but the basic groundrules should be fairly obvious. Links to newspaper articles, free Scout/Rivals posts, and other sources like Nittany Network, Recruiting Planet, and ESPN are plentiful. This is not meant to be a place to post premium info (we have a few existing relationships between ourselves and some of the contributors to those sites, and don’t really care to ruin them), and if it turns into that, (1) the comments will be deleted and (2) we just won’t do this anymore. Consider this our little recruiting pilot program. Please police yourselves, thanks.

I'd say
Just don’t copy paste stuff unless it’s from a newspaper article. That way, you can’t divulge premium stuff.
right, the easy way around it is just link to the article, but not say any of the info from it
that way if someone has access, they get the info, otherwise, nada (though it would probably get leaked by someone “commenting”)

Our old recruiting stomping grounds of South Carolina...
(Where we’ve actually had some nice success.)
Duncan (S.C.) Byrnes running back and ESPNU 150 Watch List prospect Marcus Lattimore pared his list of over two dozen scholarship offers to eight schools several days ago and Penn State made the cut.
The star back plans to visit Penn State in late June. When Lattimore arrives in State College, he won’t be alone.
Though the Nittany Lions have not offered a scholarship to Lattimore’s teammate, Nick Jones, they are interested and Jones will visit Penn State with Lattimore.
"I’m going with Marcus to Penn State on June 26-27," Lattimore said. "We are driving up there together. That will be my first time up there."
The 5-foot-9 and 170-pound Jones played wide receiver, running back and quarterback during his junior season. He caught 64 passes for 816 yards. Jones had 13 touchdowns.

SATs
"He tells me pretty much they are going to offer me. He said they are waiting on my SAT score. I just got that back. When I called him and told him I got a 1,100 he was pretty excited. I think I’ll get an offer from them."
Aren’t these tests out of 2400 now? Did they switch back to the old method?
by Jeff Junstrom on Jun 3, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions
When I got into PSU
a couple years ago they said they weren’t considering the writing portion of the SATs. I don’t know if it counts now but I’d imagine that a coach wouldn’t get excited about an 1100 unless the kid had an extremely high GPA to offset that.
"From the outside looking in, you cannot understand it. From the inside looking out, you cannot explian it."
I'd imagine if they were waiting on the SAT scores
they probably weren’t TOO impressed with the GPA.
It used to be 2 sections, math and verbal, with a max of 800 and min of 200 each. Now there are 3 sections, same range. Average is set at 500, and so someone getting an 1100 previously would be just over average. Now a 1500 would be average. An 1100 (assuming he’s talking about all 3 sections) would be eqiuvalent to a 730, which is a pretty low score, but not unheard of for a football player (not sure about a PSU football player, though).

is Marcus Lattimore speaking in the third person?
“I’m going with Marcus to Penn State on June 26-27,” Lattimore said. “We are driving up there together. That will be my first time up there.”
and yes, I’m aware that it was probably just a mistake, and they mant to say “Jones said”

What are the chances
If we offer Jones that we get Lattimore? Didn’t we try this last year with Jenkins and fail? I’m not saying NOT getting Lattimore would be a fail, but if we are “interested” in Jones, does that get us closer?

Huge Prospect Event in NJ This Weekend....
http://www.bwi.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=953645 (Its a free article)
There will be a ton of talent at the Rivals.com Premiere Showcase this weekend. Several PSU committments (Silas Redd, Mike Hull) will be on hand along with several highly rated players PSU is still pursuing (5 star DE J.R. Ferguson, 4/5 star DT Shariff Flloyd, and 4 star TEKevin Haplea). Here’s hoping our guys do some recruiting of their own this weekend….

Not aware of this kid until now…what’s the story on him? The Rivals individual page of him has a bunch of schools in the hunt, but they seem to be in no particular order. Is PSU as the third team listed an omen, or just some Rivals listing method (maybe PSU offered third?)? Also, I noticed he was from Hargrave…isn’t that where Newsome played? Any connections?
