Dr.Detroit’s analysis is especially stupid; but very entertaining:
He has two kick returns for TDs in his career. One was against Coastal Carolina and the other is the Illinois video. In the Illinois return he simply runs up the sideline for a TD. That kick return was all about the blocking and required nothing of Williams.
Right, it doesn’t require vision, speed, or quickness to blow by 11 kids and run 90 yards. Williams made it look easy, that doesn’t mean it was easy.
Outside of the two TD returns, he averaged less than 20 yards per return. Does anyone know why his numbers were so bad?
Bad? 20 yards? Does this guy watch football? 20 yards isn’t hiesman worthy, but it’s respectable. I guess this guy wants a kid who averages 50 yards a return? He also had a ton of return yards at the Senior Bowl.
For punt returns, he had 3 TDs and other than that averaged a mediocre 8 yards per return. His senior season he averaged 6 yards per return. Anyone know why his numbers are so bad?
Ok, quick question here: how many yards on a punt return is good? 20? 40? Is this PS3 NCCAF or real life football? When the team you’re facing keys on your punt return game, and does everything possible to avoid him like kicking away from him etc., and he still comes away with 8 yards on average? Yeah, that’s solid.
The punt return against Wisconsin was all about the blocking, Williams goes to the right, sees the wall of blockers then turns upfield for an easy run to the endzone. In his other two punt returns they involved poor tackling and him crossing the field, something that you can’t do in the NFL.
In summary:
1. If you get some good blocks, the TD doesn’t count. You didn’t earn it.
2. If you make someone miss or break a tackle, the TD doesn’t count. That doesn’t happen in the NFL.
3. If you cross the field the TD doesn’t count. That also never happens in the NFL.
4. If you run straight up field, the TD doesn’t count. You made it look too easy.
The stupid. It burns.

I just spent 15 minutes typing out a very detailed rebuttle of why stats are not a good indicator of Williams’ performance, why you can’t just analyze one facet of what Williams did and then compare those stats to kids who’s only role on the field was that facet and then conclude Williams will be a bust.
But I’ve learned that arguing with people like that is like ‘wrestling with a pig. you get covered in shit and the pig will enjoy it’ so I deleted it.

My memory is foggy from studying from exams
But didn’t he have a return for TD against Wisconsin? Or was that just a different play?

yeah, a punt return
it is mentioned in the last “block quote” section that millzner quotes, too, so yeah, even your short term memory is foggy ;-)

I found it funny as well...
So by out running the entire team on numerous occasions it makes him a bad player? To me it almost sounds like he is expecting (probably accurately) that D Will won’t get one block from the stellar Lions his whole career.

Anyone else want to point out
That D-Will was big on getting downfield and blocking on run plays? So many receivers these days feel like that’s not part of their job – if the ball isn’t coming to me, why should I give this play my all? You won’t get that attitude from D-Will, that’s for damn sure.

He's a character guy
On a team that badly needs character guys. He’ll be great up there.

NFL Numbers for Returns and Such...
If you look at average returns for kick-offs in NFL, you’re looking at 20-25 yards as an average per return.. that would put you in the middle of the pack in the NFL. To me, that would probably mean KR averages in NCAA should be 25+ yards per return, using the watered down effect of NCAA football skills to boost your numbers. As for Punt returns, NFL averages at or above 15 yards/return are considered excellent, with middle of the roaders being 8-12 yard averages. I would imagine the NCAA numbers would be similar since you have less room to work with on Punt Returns. Keep in mind also that Touchbacks and fair catches, to my knowledge, do not count against your individual averages
