Penn State Lunchtime links
I see some of you have already beat me to some of these in the fanposts, but here are some interesting links for your afternoon reading.
- Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin may have made another secondary NCAA violation. I'm not a big Kiffin fan or supporter, but it seems odd to me that ESPN would film him meeting with a recruit, and then turn around and say Kiffin may have committed a violation in letting them film the meeting.
- UConn is simplifying their uniforms so they are less flashy. "Think Penn State"
- Tomahawk Nation has an excellent (and lengthy) breakdown on the zone blocking scheme.
- Eleven Warriors thinks Daryll Clark should be the #10 top contender for the Heisman this year. He also thinks Terrelle Pryor is the #4 candidate. So I guess that blows his credibility out of the water.
- Ohio State likes to think they own the Fiesta Bowl. Their 4-2 record is pretty good, but as Nittany Whiteout points out, it doesn't compare to Penn State's 6-0 record.
- Finally, is JayPa thinking about running for office?

Pryor may not be a front runner for the Heisman, but if he has the same passing skils as last year he should be a clear front runner for the Ray Guy Award.
Also, regarding Jay in politics, two words: Scott Paterno.

P.S.
We actually played Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl back in ’80. We won big. Good enough for me.

The closer UConn looks like PSU
the closer they’ll look like winners.
And what’s with the “I know, I know…” crap in that Daryll Clark Heisman breakdown?

Thanks for the link, Mike. As for credibility, I’ll refer you to the argument we had last year about whether USC was going to blow you guys out or not.

Pssssh!
One bad quarter determined that game.
As I read about all the expectations you guys are putting on Pryor this year I can’t help but think about a five star quarterback that Penn State fans were crowing about back in 2006. I think he wore #14 or something.

Seriously?
We do try to stay grounded and call the Buckeyes out when they need it, but you’re really comparing Morelli to Pryor? Morelli was a highly rated recruit, but Pryor is one of those guys that only comes along every now and then.
Clark is a great quarterback and had an excellent season last year, but would you be surprised at all if Pryor put up better numbers or had more success this season with a full year under his belt? Not saying it’s going to happen, but at the same time I don’t know how you could be surprised if it does.
by eleventy on Jun 10, 2009 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
A few things
1. At least Penn State showed up against USC.
2. The hype surrounding Pryor is so absurd that if he puts up the same numbers as Clark did last year he’ll get invited to New York City for the Heisman presentation.
3. Pryor is one of those guys that only comes along every now and then. Based on what exactly? His numbers at Jennatte High School? His “breakout performance” (Big Ten Netoworks words not mine) against that rot gut Wisconsin team? Seriously, what is it? You’ve had highly regarded recruits before, what makes this kid so damn special that he gets to be the second coming of Art Schliester?

Was not hurt for the USC game. The Buckeyes stunk i up, but I guess the Lions stunk it up slightly less against the Trojans. Kudos for that.

We did lose Evan Royster in the first quarter, so I guess we both played without our top running backs.

No, Royster > Wells
Look at the ypc last year. Royster led the Big Ten. The only reason Royster didn’t get as much hype is because PSU had so many weapons he didn’t have to carry the ball 25-30 times per game.
Oh, and it took more than a stubbed toe to make Royster sit out.

Hilarious
I don’t even know how to respond to that.
Were the extra weapons you mentioned a possible reason that Royster had such good numbers? Nah, couldn’t be…
And your comment about one bad quarter against USC? 31-7 before the dogs were called off. Look, we all love our teams, but we gotta be able to admit when we get our asses handed to us instead of lamenting one bad quarter.

Dogs called off?
USC’s starters were still in the game. They were too busy trying to make highlight reel hits. Penn State showed a ton of heart. We didn’t pack it in like other teams would have.
tO$U fans still won’t admit they got the shit kicked out of them during the national championship games…“well if we didn’t hurt Ginn during a celebration it would have been a different story.”

dude Royster was our top running back and a fine one at that. I’m not going to look up the stats, but I look forward to his production next year. So yes, it was about the same handicap that the buckeyes had against USC
I’m not defending PSU’s whoopin’ out West, but I rarely hear anyone talking about the loss of Royster in that game, and it was kind of important considering he was our top back and would have helped keep the ball out of dirty sanchez’s hands.

All I'm saying is
past performance is often an indicator of future results. #14 taught me that through a long and painful two year lesson.
Last year I saw throws that looked more like punts, running out of bounds to avoid contact, immaturity, a divided team, and a whole lot of attitude.
Maybe Pryor has improved a lot and I’m wrong. But I’ll believe it when I see it.

Fair Enough
We’re all holding out hope that he improves his passing as well. But it’s also the little things like mastering the playbook, picking up reads better, developing a better rapport with his receivers. That all comes with experience (typically).

I know it's true, and one of them will win
but for god sake, pick someone that actually deserves the award. Congrats on throwing 5000 yards in a season against teams with no defenses, Mr. Big12 QB. And honestly, if there is such a thing as Satan, or some other dark force in the universe, and he/she/it offers me the assurance that Tebow will now fail and lose every game/award forevermore so we’ll never have to hear about how great he is, and the zOMG GO GATOR ESSS EEEE CEEE SPEEEED, in exchange for my soul, I’m really going to seriously consider it.

As others have pointed out
I’ve seen nothing (other than a decent performance against MSU, and the bowl game wasn’t TERRIBLE) to show me that Pryor isn’t the opposite of Morelli in skills, but the same in potential. We all thought he’d be the second coming (I mean c’mon, he was one of the best QB recruits we’d ever had), and he turned into the “don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out” guy. Pryor has the “unknown, potential upside” still on his side, while we already realized what happened with Morelli, but in interviews I’ve seen Pryor give, he shows way too many striking similarities to how Morelli handled himself.
The only thing I know about Pryor which makes me somewhat think he will work out is the quote that he told Sweatervest to bench him if he did poorly in one of the games, but it is hard to tell if he really meant that, or was trying to act “tougher” than he is.
I really am rooting for Pryor (not against PSU, obviously), though, because if he looks good, then the Big 10 looks good, and we need that.

btw, while searching for this pic again I found this, which says so much without words

“Sure, Todd, I’ll pose for a picture with you, but I’m not going to act like I enjoy it, or even look into the camera for that matter. Oh, and by the way, this is the only way you’re going to be seen for your senior season: with me in front of you. Poppa Sweatervest assured me I’d get the starting spot over you anyway when I signed on and got my sweet ‘Vette. What? You haven’t taken the picture yet? Well hurry the hell up. You know what, I can’t wait for your slow ass, I’m going to start walking away now, so take the picture quick before I’m out of frame if you really want me in the shot, I think I see some coaches that haven’t stroked my ego today yet and told me how many Heisman’s I’m going to win.”

like he did last year after some bad plays he made. I wonder how things would have gone down if we didn’t have Shipley to smack him back in line. Hopefully this year he embraces the leadership role.

The zone blocking article
is a great read.
Although it does make me worry a little about our line when Alex Gibbs stresses that chemistry and experience are absolutely crucial. With the turnover we have, and judging from past seasons, we may have a good line this year which strengthens as the year progresses, but not a great line until next year.

PSU doesn’t have the starts be a good line dummy! Everyone knows the only thing that matters is the number of starts on the line in the prior year! Nothing else! Ever!

I’m not saying it is, just saying that with all the turnover it’s gonna take a while before we see a fine tuned OL, which may lead to some setbacks this year.

as I said in the other post about this
we have basically until November before we need our line to play great. Sure we have that little matchup in week 4, but it is a home game, and I don’t think we’ll need a GREAT line to beat the fucktards, just a good enough line, which we will hopefully have. Also, it isn’t like the “new” guys have been sitting on the bench the whole time twiddling their thumbs previous years, but I do recognize that starting is still more meaningful than subbing.
