but watch as Alabama takes the hit

while FSU will fight tooth and nail for less of a hit. Oh, also, Alabama also self reported. It is like all these other schools are just trying to make a mockery out of FSU’s trying to weasel out of the punishment for the cheating scandal.

It sure seems simple: you break the rules you vacate the wins.
In the coverage of the schools other than FSU they barely mention the coach.
Whereas for FSU it’s portrayed as taking wins from Bowden.

Breaking News: Penn State and Joe Paterno to vacate 383 wins

Penn State University self reported they provided athletes free helmets to use during games at the request of head coach Joe Paterno. Paterno responded, “I focused so hard on making sure these kids got a good education, I didn’t want it to get knocked out of them on the field. I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to, but if that’s the rule, well, that’s the rule. How many did you say? 383 wins? Aww, geez, guys, you’re killing me here. Ah well, we’ve had some heckuva teams, and I really enjoyed coaching them.”

Bobby Bowden, the second all time winningest coach with 382 wins, one fewer than Paterno, was unable to be reached for comment as he is currently busy appealing the ruling by the NCAA that he must vacate 14 wins due to a widespread academic scandal involving 60 university athletes, many of whom were football players, cheating in an online music class.

they're supposedly not losing any scholarships, just have to vacate the wins

and seriously, who cares about past wins, other than Bowden/FSU and Paterno/PSU (though I suppose schools at the top of all time wins lists might care a bit, currently Michigan, Texas, ND, Nebraska, OSU, PSU, Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee, USC)
