Not Sure What Could Be Better
World Series Champs-Phillies
Big 10 Champs-Penn State
Super Bowl Champs-Steelers
NIT Champs-Penn State
Stanley Cup Champs-Penguins
Calder Cup Champs-Hershey Bears
Its been a helluva year I'd say. I mean, I'm not a Phillies fan, and I'm sure there are quite a few BSDers who aren't Steeler or Penguin fans, but I think we can all appreciate how cool it is to have 3 of pro sports 4 championships residing in the Commonwealth at the same time. There are 50 states in the union, and I'm not sure a single one of them can claim a year like we've had here in PA in 2008-2009. Soak it in.
Suck it world!

Besides that, the only way it would be better is if Gary Roberts had still been playing for the Pens and if Gary Roberts got into a fight with Hossa.

Just curious
Does anyone here visit the other SBN blogs for the PA teams? Or do you all just use BSD as the defacto PA sports blog?

I occasionally go to Pensburgh, but I usually go to The Pensblog for that sort of stuff. And, regrettably, I’m a Bills/Blue Jays fan, so the other PA blogs don’t affect me.
For what it’s worth, Buffalo Rumblings is a very good blog though.

I keep tabs on things over at The Good Phight (still in lurk-mode there), and Broad Street Bullies (where I’ve made a few postings now). I’ve also checked out Pensburgh a number of times – a lot of good people over there.
I will say this, tho – the professional sports blogs seem much more serious than the college blogs. Not all of them, and not everyone, but it seems like it’s much more focused and less free-wheeling. Of course, my main two college blogs are here and BHGP, so I might have a skewed view of things. :)

Wait until someone on your team gets hurt
we’re holding ground without our leadoff hitter and cleanoff man. Good luck staying within firing range of us without Howard and Rollins. Well, Rollins sucks, so losing him would probably be a good thing.

Lidge is hurt
Eyre is hurt.
Chase, I hate to say, is due his yearly DL stint.
Hamels was hurt.
Myers is done for the year.
So the Phils have had their injuries.
To be honest, its not the injuries that’s hurting your team, its your imbecile manager. Not that I really want him to go because it helps the Phils, but getting rid of Jerry Manuel would be a plus for the Mets. Also, Omar Minaya is to blame for a lot of it too, the sorry lack of depth is his fault.
So cheer up, emo guy, there are 100+ games left this season and anything can happen. I want the best for both teams, it’ll make the end of the year race so much better.

Oh I agree
Jerry Manuel defines the term shit-for-brains. But we’ve been without Delgado and Reyes for over a month. Hamels missed a start or two, Myers isn’t actually good. And Omar, who decided WE DON’T FREAKING NEED A GOOD LEFTY IN THE PEN OUTSIDE OF FELICIANO and Manuel who figures lefty vs lefty must work even though lefties are hitting .500 off that Jap bastard. I hate virtually everyone on the Mets outside of BEltran, Wright, Reyes, Santana, KRod and Maine, and especially everyone who runs the team. It’s a fucking joke of an organization.

Its all good man.
But are you really gonna hate on the Phils who have the second best record in the league even though the starting pitching has been terrible until recently and our beloved closer of last year has sucked and is currently helping by being on the DL?
The Mets when healthy have one of the best lineups in the league, but championships are often won between the ears, and that is where they fall short.
I’m just wondering why anyone who likes the New York Mets feels like they can still talk shit on the Phils at this point. Really? Let alone the fact that since this rivalry has “began” the Phils have 2 division and 1 world series title(s), but also the Phillies have the best record in the National League since Uncle Cholly has became the manager. Only the Red Sox, Yanx and Angels have won more games, and they play in the junior circuit. Just stop please.

Talking shit?
Rollins is not a OMGWTFLOL TEH AWESOME player. He’s an average shortstop. The fact that he has an MVP trophy is an absolute joke. He’s a low-OBP, decent slugging shortstop whose power numbers are inflated by playing in that joke of a ballpark.
And come on, “between the ears?” David Wright rips a double of Mariano Rivera for what should’ve been a GW RBI and hit .400 each of the last Septembers. Manuel singlehandedly ruined last season for us, and the past 3 days too. If we had even an average manager or GM, we wouldn’t have had a problem winning the past couple pennants.
In 2007, Tom Glavine was 0-5 with a 12 ERA the month of September, and allowed 7 runs that last game of the season. Oh, but the Mets are weak.
In 2008, the bullpen was an absolute joke. They couldn’t hold a lead ever. And we came back from being 10 games back at the all star break to grab the lead. 8-11 over the last 19 games is a hiccup, not a choke. Oh, but the Mets aren’t clutch.
Here’s a newsflash, buddy, there’s no such thing as clutch. When it comes to the 8th inning, no Mets players start wetting their pants. And the Phillies late inning success can be attributed to the fact that they have a decent bullpen and a powerful lineup that hasn’t faced a major injury yet. Oh, but they have heart.
Heart, passion, grit…that’s all bullshit. The Mets don’t lack those three. They lacked a decent Glavine, a respectable bullpen, and a non-retarded manager.
Even so, we won the season series from you last year—not exactly what we were going for but it proves that we’re not AFRAID OF YOU or anything ridiculous like that, and we’re on pace to do the same thing this year. So calm down with your gloating, there’s a long season to go, and once Jerry gets canned, we’ll go rocketing up the standards.
And fuck Luis Castillo.

Hmm, bitter much?
Excuses excuses. More excuses. Pointing out your team’s flaws and saying that is why you lost isn’t an excuse, it is just a reason, a fact.
I’m not gloating, just stating facts.
The Phillies and Mets have been historically pretty awful franchises. Neither are the Yankees or Cardinals or even the Red Sox. Since I have been born, both have won 1 title and lost in another WS, The Phils more recent. Both have had 100 game losing seasons.
But in the real world, recent results have the Phillies winning more games. There is no excuses, nothing subjective, just the bottom line. Wins and losses. If that changes, you can talk, but you can’t right now. There is no way around it.
I have all the respect in the world for players on the field(except maybe Reyes, he rubs me the wrong way) The Mets have a ton of talent, but haven’t pulled through yet. I have never gone up to a Mets fan and screamed “CHOKERS” or anything like that, but if their fans (you) start talking, the old scoreboard rebuttle never fails.
Heres to hoping there is another exciting finish to the season, only hopefully the Mutts can nab the wild card and we can showdown in the NLCS.

See, and here's the thing
When I lose to a team I respect, I can deal with it. When we went head-to-head with the Braves and Larry Jones, as much as I hated those guys, I respected them. They had our number. They were the better team. And most importantly, they didn’t talk shit.
But what I can’t stand is how ESPN and the national sports media paints the Phillies as these scrappy bunch of good guys when the truth is, they’re not. Vic Torino is a bush league player, Cole Hamels and Jimmy Rollins run their mouth, and Rollins is more of a grandstander than Reyes, by a large margin. Nothing against guys like Utley, though I can’t stand how much admiration Howard gets, when he’s really a good not great player.
You’re easily the sanest Phillie fan I know, because most of you people seem to think the Mets lack the grit or the hustle to win. And yes, you did win a World Series. NOBODY IS TRYING TO TAKE THAT AWAY FROM YOU. It’s something I’ve been waiting my whole life for. But what’s so immensely frustrating is that I know we have the pieces to do just that. And because of factors outside anyone’s control—injuries, horrible managing, awful roster construction—the good guys like Wright and Beltran don’t get the chance. That’s the shame of the matter.
by PSUdevon on Jun 13, 2009 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
This is my last comment on the matter.
I don’t want to get much farther into an argument about baseball on BSD. I feel like I have already offended our beloved moderators with this drivel of a shouting match.
You may think Rollins is average, thats fine. I don’t think he is HOF or anything, but he has accomplished much more in his career than Mr. Reyes who is a fine player in his own right.
You can blame your manager and run him out like Randolph. Blame Minaya, blame whatever.
But please please please just be rational. The Phillies have produced in this time we are discussing. They have won a title, and won more games period than the Mets.
And, you started this, so don’t get all defensive. I believe you said “Go F*** Yourself” when nobody else was talking shit about your team. I’m actually a pretty nice guy, you happened to make a very rude statement and others stood up for themselves.

Man
I hate the Mets but I’d take Wright and Santana any day on the Phils.
I think the Mets will be imploded soon, even if Minaya doesn’t lose his job. It’s obvious that the team fails under pressure and new blood is needed. You don’t want a culture of consistent losing to start.

Fine,
I originally defended him, as everyone makes mistakes, and he did stand up and apologize.
So now he headlines a comment with “Go f**k yourself”, and it just bugged me. Kidding or not, I don’t see the need for language like that here, Yes, lots of us use it – but generally only toward a deserving target du jour during our periodic hatefests. Other than that? Rarely.
Yes, I’m old, and probably way too old fashioned, but I see us as mostly above that language. Just the way I feel.
