Under an overcast sky Thursday morning the final beam for the Mount Nittany Medical Center East Wing expansion was lifted into place, bearing the signatures of close to 200 people.
Among those at the hospital to make the occasion were Joe and Sue Paterno, on hand to announce a $1 million gift for the Foundation for Mount Nittany Medical Center.
Joe Paterno played down the couple’s gift, saying it was a small part of a larger effort by the community to build a better health care system.

Another example of why he's the best
The world is a much better place because of Joe Paterno! He continues to give as much or more than he’s received! WE ARE!!

Eh
Neither of those are within miles of the crap officiating of the Iowa-Penn State game.
Anger toward the refs is best reserved for games where it’s most defensible. Another example would be the “Bielema is a douchebag” game in 2006, where if the officials were at all competent they would’ve blown the second kickoff dead and stopped the clock for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The “Bielema is a douchebag” game was made even worse with Craig James’s halftime comments.
by dmoney350z on Jun 19, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
don't you know?
he actually got the OK from the refs before the game on whether or not he could do it. I wish I could find a link, but a ref was at one of the Wisky practices or something like that, and Bielema asked if such a situation would be allowed by the rules, and the refs said yes.
So instead of just being incompetent (since this is clearly an attempt at abusing the rules, and should have been an unsportsmanlike penalty) they could actually be considered co-conspirators

Perhaps I’m being unduly charitable (an unusual attitude for me to take toward anyone associated with Wisconsin, believe me), but I tend to give him credit for single-handedly convincing the NCAA to get rid of Hated Rule 3.2.5(e). I’m not at all glad the rules had such room for abuse, but to a degree at least I’m glad someone saw the potential and forced them to fix it.
by SpartanDan on Jun 21, 2009 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think he could have achieved the same goal
if he wrote in a letter to the NCAA about a potential loophole. Of course, actions speak louder than words, and the NCAA might have just dismissed a letter like that and say, “no coach would ever be a big enough douce to do that”
by The JuggerNitt on Jun 22, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Here's why PSU was so pissed
LIttle Berttie Belima didn’t invent this.
Penn State claims to have contacted the Big Ten before the season started and asked what would the referees do in this situation; the Big Ten said the likely result would be an unsportsmanlike act penalty would be called, and the referees would put the time back on the clock.
Paterno hasn’t stopped kicking Wisconsin’s ass since.

"Paterno hasn’t stopped kicking Wisconsin’s ass since."
I would honestly be a little bit surprised when or if we lose to Bret Bielema* again.

I wouldn't be surprised........
if after 40+ years of making great money (relative to the average Joe) and modest living (from what I understand) if this isn’t 6 months worth of interest on his investments.
I hope someday I can make even a fraction of this kind of impact on those around me.

Mark May and ESPN deride Paterno's donation.
He’s too old, he should retire, the donation was too slow and not as fast as the SEC, and USC would crush the donation.
Mine as well have Indiana donate the amount because Big Ten universities are the same old tractor pull.
Blah, blah, blah.

Joe makes me proud to be a Penn State Grad.
He exemplifies a life of integrity and generosity that we can all aspire to.

CBS Sports
Someone please send this article to Gregg Doyel at CBS Sports, whose recent article derided Joe Pa as a “selfish old man”. Pretty selfish guy, donating millions to libraries and hospitals, right?

I believe he also donated to the spiritual center/church on campus.
And protecting college students from dangerous drivers.
What a bad, bad man.

Who had the story not long ago about how much Paterno made this past year as HC?
Wasn’t it just not much over a million bucks, or at least under 2M? How many people would give up the majority, or even half of their past year’s salary (and not spend it on a lavish new home or yacht) for a charitable donation. I know Joe has to be loaded after all these years, even with an extremely modest salary, but this sort of selflessness and dedication to both the university and community never ceases to amaze me.
by dawsonPSU10 on Jun 19, 2009 9:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Wow, so 77% of JoePa's salary went into this donation
Not that he doesn’t have butt loads of money from coaching for so long, but still, it’s no small thing that a person gives up 3/4 of their salary to charity. He is an incredible person, and things like this prove how legendary a man he really is.

This?
This is what it means to be a Penn Stater. End of story.

Well
This is what defines who Joe Paterno is. No offense to anyone, but I doubt many of us would donate half of our salary from the past year, even to an extremely worthy cause like this one. Now in terms of the mentality of putting dedication to the University, and community above ourselves, then, yes, that is what it means to be a Penn Stater.

don't we already donate like half our salaries
to the good ole USA (and your local state and city governments)?

JoePa is the man!
He is one of the greatest coaches and an even greater MAN!
I am sure ESPN will do an Outside the Lines on all of Joe Paterno’s millions of dollars worth of charitable contributions he has made over the years.
I hope JoePa coaches for 20 more years!
