NLC New Season Ticket Point Cut-Off

For those who are waiting to see if they are getting new season tickets, I checked my online credit card statement today and found a charge from Penn State for what should be season tickets.  I have 65 lifetime points so that should give everyone an idea of where they sit in the quest for tickets.

Who knows, maybe this is the year the cut-off drops down instead of going up.  I think it was somewhere around 52 points last year.

renewals

Saw that renewals were at 97% (99% renewal last year), so it should likely drop, but I doubt by very far. Season tix waiting list should still be in place again this year.

My friend's dad

has had checks cashed, but then refunded because he didn’t meet certain cutoffs (for away game single tickets…he actually has season tickets). It really pissed us off, too, cuz we then didn’t look for tickets, and even turned down offers of face value that some people had given us, and by the time we found out we weren’t getting the tix, the prices were ridiculous. I don’t know why they do it that way, but from my experience, them cashing checks isn’t an indicator that you are getting the tix.

by The JuggerNitt on Jun 22, 2009 12:27 PM EDT reply actions

Wow, Curley is looking for any chance to make a buck

Cashes everyone’s check, no matter what level, and gains interest for a month, then sends refunds to those who are below the cutoff.

by Screen Name 20 on Jun 22, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Or

the NLC could simply be cashing the checks to make sure that they’re good and there’s no insufficient funds before awarding Season Tix to one member over another whose check is good. Just a thought.

by RNF18 on Jun 23, 2009 8:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd tend to go with Screen Name's thought

since if they were “checking to make sure there were enough funds” they could just award the tickets as soon as they see the check is cashed, which obviously didn’t happen. There are a lot of businesses that make money off of interest of money that they don’t really “own” and will be giving back eventually. Just think about mail in rebates, where yes, they make money off of people who never send them in in the first place, but they also make a few months interest on the “rebate” money from the time you pay full price for whatever, until the time (6-8 weeks later) that they send you the check and you cash it. On individual purchases it isn’t a ton of money, but for every rebate ever processed, that $ adds up.

52 last year

The cut off was 52 points last year and renewals are around 97% I figure it will take 47-50 this year. I know I have 61 and am hoping to get my second set of 2 back that I gave up last year. Trying to plan ahead for this Alabama series.

So...

If I have 8 now (since I just joined along with an Alumni Association lifetime membership) and make the minimum donations (as a poor law school graduate) until I can afford more, I should be able to get season tickets around the time Notre Dame joins the Big Ten?

by Jeff Junstrom on Jun 22, 2009 6:06 PM EDT reply actions

if you are a graduate with the lifetime Alumni membership, that gets you 15 points right off the bat

and then 2 points for every year you are a member of the NLC, and 1 point for every $50. The most “efficient” way to get points is to just make the minimum payment (3 points for $50, opposed to 4 points for $100, or 5 points for $150, etc.), but it’ll take forever to get enough points that way. That’s the route I’ve been taking, but I almost wonder if I should just “donate” the $2000 or so to get up into the 60s range, since I seem to be spending about $4-600 over face value on tickets each year (and then I’d have a second set of tickets as well, which would save my friends about that much as well).

Of course that would all be dependent on actually HAVING $2000 extra to spend, instead of having no money

We were in the low 40's

last year and made a run at the previous cutoff (52) and ended up with 56…of course we did this before the economy blew up

I am a graduate and AA lifetime member

and I did NOT get 15 off the bat. I got 8, but I forget what the allocation was.

Just Looked

at the NLC page that describes the points, and I see where your post about 15 points comes in, but they have not put my AA membership 10 point bonus on yet. Will that happen eventually, or do I need to raise hell to someone?

by Jeff Junstrom on Jun 23, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

lifetime AA member

You have to call the NLC and inform them that you are a lifetime AA member and they’ll add the points to your account. I don’t think it happens automatically.

by Laaaaazzz on Jun 23, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

They did mine automatically

but it took a while before it showed up (I think until the second year I was a member) it just showed me as having 0 points)

by The JuggerNitt on Jun 23, 2009 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Your LIfe Membership has to be fully paid

So if your on the $20 a month for two years plan, it doesn’t kick in until you’ve paid off.

NLC

Just got off the phone with the NLC. Not like it wil matter for me, as it will only bump me to 18, but they said they do a bulk application of that year’s AA members.

You could gift

highly appreciated stock in lieu of cash. That’s been working out real well for me lately (uh, yeah right).

I take a look at the priority points standings and give as much as I can to try and elbow my way in front of a few people in the range. (Since everybody else looks at the same list this actually does nothing but make me feel like I have some sort of control).

what bugs me whenever I see this list

is there’s almost enough seats for every NLC member to be able to get 4 tickets, and yet I can’t even get 2 (yeah yeah, I know plenty of high donor people have a billion seats, it just frustrates me)

by The JuggerNitt on Jun 23, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's say you

give say $250,050 to achieve the top tier group that currently caters to only 62 individuals. Since you are a first year donor with big points you jump to the front of the line of newbies – so you’ll get tickets. Getting in the stadium is priority one.

But what your big donation does is set you up for the big seat upgrade next year. All is takes is one guy with 50 yd line seats to kick and their family unable to step up with the $$ to buy up to the point level. Who is the guy who gets upgraded bigtime – Mr. $250,050.

by rahpsu92 on Jun 23, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Just to butt in

but chances are, said guy who “kicks it” with 50 yd-line seats will probably be leaving said family with a buttload of cash, so I wouldn’t expect to see those seats open any time soon.

What happened with that 501-1000 point range?

It just jumps to almost 1500 memebers out of nowhere.

by Screen Name 20 on Jun 23, 2009 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

It's the first tier that goes

from a 50 point bracket to 500. I’m guessing that the average donor gives less than $25,000.

Sorry for being young and unknowing in the ways of the alumni

but how do you get a “lifetime Alumni membership”? Is it something I should be looking for now, even though I haven’t graduated, or is it only for graduates?

by dawsonPSU10 on Jun 23, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

you get alumni lifetime membership

by giving them $600. I don’t think you have to have graduated from PSU. What is nice is that you can get on a payment plan ($30 / month auto-deducted) and get the 10 points credited before you’re officially paid in full. It is worth less points than just giving the money directly to the NLC but it comes with the added bonus of being a life member of the alumni association.

by PSiriUs on Jun 23, 2009 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

NLC points

I’m pretty sure you don’t get the NLC points until you complete the payments to the Alumni Association (if you are doing the installment plan). At least that’s how it was for me (though perhaps I was eligible earlier and just didn’t get the NLC points).

by Laaaaazzz on Jun 24, 2009 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

actually

I’m 100% certain that I got the points before I finished the payments (as I don’t finish them until October of this year and the points have been listed on my account since I started the plan). You just need to be persuasive in your conversations with them.

by PSiriUs on Jun 24, 2009 6:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Graduates

As far as I know, it is only for graduates, but I could be way off. Of course, the word “Alumni” in “Alumni Association” is pretty self explanatory. That being said, I don’t think I had to prove alumni-ship when I got mine, but they might cross-reference when they sell the memberships. Again, I have no idea, mine was a gift from my alumni father.

by Jeff Junstrom on Jun 23, 2009 10:12 PM EDT up reply actions

just have attended? I’m not sure one way or another.

The Alum Assoc must be killing

their long term cash flow with all the discounted lifetime memberships becasue I recently received an offer to become a “contributing lifetime member”. You get all the benefits of your current membership that was paid in full 15 yrs ago, but you now have the privelege of belonging to a select group that is still sending checks to PSU. lol, yeah, I just sorta tossed that one into the trash can

Though I think it does contribute towards scholarship funds or something, which is nice and all, but my credit card is my priority right now.

I did always wonder why they discount the lifetime membership so much, though (I think I got mine for $400, though it was my graduation present from my dad).

by The JuggerNitt on Jun 24, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I was married

when I graduated (I was 21) and we got the family deal for $750 for both of us to be lifetime. We got the 15 points as soon as we started to make the payments. I graduated in 2002 and I got season tixs in 2003 when we were real bad so there was no points total to worry about.

Also, if you are a student member of the NLC or Alumni or whatever it is, you get 1 NLC point for every $25 you donate, so if you can get your dad or grandma or someone to give you a few extra bucks for your birthday or something you can earn points faster that way. I know I had a few from that.

tickets

I called today and confirmed – 65 points got me in the door in section NHU.

by PSiriUs on Jun 22, 2009 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

eh, nosebleed section, ouch

actually I kid, I’ve only been up there once, but you see the field really well and get great perspective of the action. Although, I imagine you’d probably freeze your balls off in November, and it’s probably not as much fun as being in the bowl since there are fewer people.

by dawsonPSU10 on Jun 23, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I've sat up there

before with friends and didn’t think it was so bad. No sun in your face like East or South and a good view of the field. Plus I’d rather have nosebleeds than continue scalping and scrounging for seats.

by PSiriUs on Jun 23, 2009 10:14 PM EDT up reply actions

No sun is a huge plus

My dad’s seats were on the ten yd-line 2/3 of the way up the side of the bowl to the luxury boxes, and the sun was a bitch.

It’s also a great view of the valley from up there. And like I said you get a great perspective of the field from up there, almost a videogame-esque view of the field.

by dawsonPSU10 on Jun 23, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

um, I think you have it backwards

the North seats face south, which is where the sun typically is, especially in late november noon games.

But yeah, ever since I’ve graduated, the only seats I ever get are in the North Upper or South Upper. They aren’t a terrible view (I actually like being up high enough that I can see the plays develop and such, and my favorite seats are midway up in the corner…which just happens to be the student section :-p ). What I don’t like about the South Upper, though, is you are above the band and student section, so you don’t really hear them that well.

My guess

The points cutoff will end up being in the low 40’s this season — a dip from last year, but still leaving thousands of potential buyers out in the cold.

by Laaaaazzz on Jun 23, 2009 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

All this talk has me excited about
Since the NLC site is completely void of any ticket information (here's an idea - put a calendar or tix info of any kind on the site so the phone lines don't burn up this time of year), I too called the ticket office.

I put in for a seat upgrade (like that’ll happen) and am hopeful. Details will not be available until late July. Tickets expect to be mailed late July/early August.

by rahpsu92 on Jun 23, 2009 2:21 PM EDT reply actions

Assuming 40 gets you in the door

what point total gets you out of the nosebleeds? Not that there is a bad seat in the house (except maybe in the Michigan section, which is where I had to watch that game last year…but it was bad because I heard so much bitching, not bad because I got to point and laugh at all those dbags, except my fiancee).

Let’s say I get my tickets in a couple of years once I amass the requisite points. Let’s further assume that I am sucking hind tit and will be the last person in the door. I assume that the season ticket policy, rationally, gives priority seating to the higher point holders, thereby giving me the highest seat in the middle of the endzone. What is the upgrade policy, and how long, estimated, until I can move either around to the 50, or down to the first level?

by Jeff Junstrom on Jun 23, 2009 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

It's all about timing, and $$$$

I timed my application just right prior to the 2005 season and got tickets on the West Side with a preference request on my first application for season tix. We were down in 2004 so I got what I wanted because I timed it just right.

Other than that scenario playing out again(hope it never does), you have to get above 500 points in order to request a seat change at this point.

by RNF18 on Jun 23, 2009 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

So

What youre saying is that it is entirely based on timing and availability of seats? Let’s say that when I amass enough points, 20 season tickets open up all over the stadium. Will I randomly be given two tickets (assuming I ask for two) of those 20 open seats, or will the people ahead of me get first choice of the seats, and I will be able to choose from whatever is left?

by Jeff Junstrom on Jun 23, 2009 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

When the time comes

What they will do is start you off in the North or the South. That doesn’t mean that you’re stuck there though. What you’ll want to do is select a preference if you want to sit somewhere else. Then what the NLC will do is look at the amount of openings in that section and all of the requests for that section. They will award the open seats to the people with the most points that requested that section.

Once you get tickets, the NLC will keep you in that section forever unless you request a seat change and even then you’ll have to have enough points to qualify for the seat change as I indicated above. That’s why the process is about timing and money.

by RNF18 on Jun 24, 2009 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Seat Upgrade Form...

you can’t handpick your seats, but can choose a preferred area to ugrade to, if available. And while it is generally accepted that you need 500 points to upgrade, turn in the form anyway and hope your timing is right. You can always turn the seats down and stay where you are.
