Interesting Recruiting Developments
Michigan State picked up a QB commit today when Joe Boisture switched his verbal from Boston College to the Spartans.
Now, Penn State wasn't recruiting Boisture, so who cares right? Wrong. Penn State is recruiting the Rivals #6 quarterback Robert Bolden, who had listed Penn State and Michigan State in his final two.
The word is that Dantonio only planned to take one QB in this class. So there's a good chance the door is closed in East Lansing. Bolden will be visiting Penn State this weekend, and there is a high posibility we may get his commitment. That will give us two of the top ten rated quarterbacks in the country in this class with Bolden and Paul Jones.
This would easily give Penn State the best quarterback recruiting class in the country. Did you ever think you would see the day when the top quarterbacks in the country were competing to play for Jay Paterno?

I was just gonna post something about this
I also saw that Bolden liked Oregon as well, I’m not sure how much though.
We could potentially get him and Hailes this weekend, that is exciting. I don’t follow recruiting hard, but getting new recruits is exciting to me, especially with the siren and all.

Everyone says they like Oregon
I think it’s required from all recruits these days. How many of them actually go there?

Jaypa should call it the “Spread Beaver”.

Too many cooks in the kitchen?
Not to be negative, but If we have Newsome, Jones, and Bolden in the roster, what are the chances that all 3 of them stay with the team? Sounds like a Devlin situation to me….

the Devlin situation didn't turn out so bad, now, did it.
Especially when you consider that Devlin transferring actually opened up the doors for Newsome to come. While I don’t like players transferring, this is a “good” type of transfer at the program (mainly, the guy in front of him is so good, that there’s no reason staying to compete). USC has this “problem” by the metric assload, and they don’t seem to be suffering too much.
So yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised to see either PJ or Bolden transfer sometime down the road, but if we have success with Clark this year, the New Awesome for the 3 or 4 years he is here, and then either Jones or Bolden, then the next crop of QBs will be like, “oh, PSU has been developing QBs lately, and it looks like a spot just opened up”

I've been thinking
We’d be best off redshirting Jones (and Bolden if we get him) to get an extra year of separation, although I don’t know if these blue chip guys would be crazy about the idea of redshirting. I still would pretty much expect either Jones or Bolden to transfer if they lose the starting job to the other one.

from scouting sites
and let’s be honest, it’s all a crap shoot, but here’s the analysis:
Bolden is a more developed passer, but PJ as more upside — meaning he’s got the potential to be amazing but is very, very raw right now.
So assuming (big assumption*) we sign both these kids, PJ is the likely candidate for RS. Bolden would be Newsome’s primary backup next year. Newsome probably be the shit and when he graduates in 4 years (2012 seniorseason) we’ll be left with Bolden who’s got 1 year left and PJ who’s got two. However that ends up working out, we’re still in awesome shape.
*I"m one of those ’it’s too good to be true’ Penn Staters, and this all seems way too good to be true. Count me as skeptical about signing both these kids.

Are we recruiting Sith lords or Quarterbacks?
Can it be both? Does anybody have a premium rivals subscription? Who is the top dual threat sith lord in this years recruiting class?

The top dual threat sith lord is Robert Bolden
PJ Jones is 4th rated Pro Style QB….
and it can’t be both since many kids thnk they are going pro since they’ve been told this since freshman year

I'm seriously (but cautiously) giddy right now
I can’t believe how well we’re doing, and how great things are looking, even if we don’t get Bolden. But for us (Pennsylvania State University) to pull two top QBs in one class, along with all of these other great recruits in the same year? It’s almost inconceivable. I’m still getting over the fact that we have more top offensive recruits than we do defensive ones!
Even better, and I get excited thinking about this, and I don’t know much about offensive plays, so this is a question from me, could we be possibly looking at a potential 2QB system for the future, or is that far too “new-school” for us? With Devlin, yes, we had a 2 star QB come out of nowhere and be a superstar, forcing Devlin to leave early (in what really was, like it or not, the best decision for him and his career, so I wish him all the best sincerely), but we’ve never had a situation like this with so much potential talent and depth under center. Newsome, Jones, and Bolden are all mobile QBs, all almost DC-17-esque and all great prospects for running the Spread HD. Any thoughts, or am I just letting excitement get the better of me?
My only fear is pissing one Newsome or Jones off by taking another QB, but again, I don’t really histories and trends of recruiting multiples people for the same position (like USC does with every position only to have kids never see a snap who were five stars).

2 QB systems don't work...typically
unless each QB has a different set of skills (i.e. Florida had Chris Leak a pocket passer and then Freshman Tim Tebow came in as a change of pace/running QB. If you remember he didn’t really throw all that much.)

…there are all sorts of other possibilities. One of them is out for a year with an injury, gets charged by the D.A. for felony jaywalking, etc. Can’t have too many top-end QB’s.

"New-school"?
I know you’re still an undergrad, but unless you’re Doogie Houser, you should recall Kevin Thompson and Rashard Casey. I believe that was exactly a decade ago. Alright, if you were only 10 years old, you might not remember it. Basically, Thompson was the pocket passer, and Casey was the shifty playmaker. It actually worked pretty well; it was the D that fell apart the last 3 games. Lost them despite scoring 23, 27, and 28 points.
Just don’t forget that Joe has been around long enough that nothing is really new to him. When they started doing fun stuff with MRob in 05, Joe had some quote about running the shotgun against the Carthagenians or something. Basically, there’s really nothing new you can do in football unless you change the rules. When some glitzy team has success with System X, Joe’s detractors say he’s too old and conservative to try System X, and he should retire. In actuality, Joe played and coached System X 62 years ago, and he knows more about it than anyone else alive. He also knows it’s not the best system for his current players, so there’s no way he’ll try it because he knows it won’t work.
/end rant that was not directed against dawson (b/c he’s always positive about the team, so he’s cool). But Joe-detractors can eat it. In fact, they can eat the one that Marian Hossa is still trying to choke down.

Yeah, I don't remember them
My first PSU game memory was watching the 94 (or was it 95?) Rose bowl, because my Dad was there. And I didn’t understand the importance of what I was witnessing at the time (I would have been 7) like I do know. In fact I remember being pretty bored watching the game. My first game in the flesh was when I was in 4th grade and 7 years old (1997 Pitt game), then I believe the next was 6th grade (tOSU 1999). I may have seen them play, but just don’t remember it. The first player I remember my father pointing out to me was Curtis Enis, which would have been the 97 game.
I should have realized nothing’s new to Joe. I was going on a typical PSU offense, which is pretty much all I’ve ever known. Forgive my excited ramblings.

I don't think we have to worry about Newsome
Since it is highly doubtful that Joe would give the starting QB job to a true freshman unless Newsome really sucks for some reason.
So we have (assuming we get both Jones and Boldin):
2009: Clark starter, Newsome backup
2010: Newsome starter, probably Boldin as true freshman backup, with Jones redshirting
2011: Newsome starter, Boldin (probably) or Jones as backup, and the other as “3rd string”
then it depends if Newsome comes back for his senior year
If he does:
2012: Newsome starts, and I could see either Boldin or Jones transferring, depending on how their “battle” goes. Boldin is likely the 2nd string, but who knows, he might transfer so he can have 2 years as a starter)
if they don’t transfer
2013: likely Boldin starts (if he’s still around, this is his senior year), PJ as backup
2014: PJ starts in his senior year.
so it almost seems like the ideal situation is that hopefully PJ develps real well in his redshirt and freshman year, and Boldin either transfers or ideally stays as a backup. This way we can have 2 years for one of them as starter OR for Newsome to transfer and then get 2 years out of Boldin (or 3 years out of PJ)
It is really hard to tell, though, since who knows who will be a star, and who will be a dud, and also who will be content with 3 years as backup, and 1 year of starting.
by The JuggerNitt on Jun 26, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Add Anthony Gonzalez to the mix too
Along with Boldin, we’re also in the hunt for the PA AAAA player of the year. It’s really take your pick with any of those three QBs
by WPIALkid22 on Jun 26, 2009 1:17 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Meh doubt it
Especially if we get Bolden. He really wants to be a QB and PSU sees him more like a safety, which I agree with.
