BSD Play List 2009
It's the off season, and as I tried to think of things to keep us entertained until Akron, I thought it'd be nice for us all to put together a BSD certified play list for this coming season. I'm going to list some obvious ones, and yinz can post you're favorites in the comments, and vwa-la, a play list. What pumps you up? What takes you back? Put it down.
-Hey Baby/4-2-4-Yeah...this version doesn't sound remotely like the version sung at the stadium with the Blue Band, but if you're at home, far away from you're brethren, its better than nothing.
-Have You Ever Seen The Rain?/CCR-I'm not sure if I've ever heard a song sung louder by the Beaver Stadium crowd than this one at the Illinois/Whiteout game last year. It was such a hit that they played it twice!
-Sweet Caroline/Neil Diamond-I've always thought of this one as more of a Red Sox hit, but...we all know the words, so it has my blessing.
-In the Air Tonight/Phil Collins-This has always been a "big game" song for me. It seems like they always play it during warm-ups of night games. Does anyone know why? Edubacate me.
-Livin' On a Prayer/Bon Jovi-Ahhh...dramatic key changes.
-Zombie Nation-Whether your a fan or not, Ohio State '05 forever linked this song and Penn State. I feared for my life after the defensive sequence in the first half that ended with the Lowry pick that was returned to the Buckeye 2. They played it after every play, and the crowd got more and more jacked until the stands we're going up and down 6 inches at a time.
Your turn!

gotta start gamedays off with bang:
‘Thunderstruck’ by AC/DC – the live version has a great build-up to an intense finish. It’s a great song to open the first beer of the day to.
that song is tainted in my mind
as MSU uses it as a “pump-up” song where on the video screen the Spartan statue comes alive and slices in half the logo of the visiting team.

though the drinking game IS fun
(everyone stand in a circle, and every time “Thunderstruck” is said, the next person in line has to keep drinking until the next “Thunderstruck” when it moves to the next person, repeat.)

I loved In the Air Tonight
when they played that at the Illinois game, I was on the verge of losing it, I’d been at the stadium in the rain for 12 hours, and that came on and suddenly, I was pumped.
Also, they always play Africa by Toto in the pregames. And Horse with No Name.
NittanyWhiteOut.com. Arguably the second best Penn State blog I know of.
I hate Toto
but that song is so goddamn addictive I had to put it on my iPod, even if it is the stupidest song ever
I always like it when they play the fight song, but I guess they don’t do that anymore.
Fine.
White and Nerdy by Weird Al Yankovic. A tribute to our white linebackers of doom.
DO YOU HAVE PRIDE, DANNY?
I love Weird Al
He was all I used to listen to as a kid until I discovered The Beatles, then the power of Rock and Roll possessed me.
PSU Sounds 2009
I actually do this exact thing every year. I call it PSU Sounds ’09. Any and all music you hear on gameday I throw on the cd, whether it be piped in music or the blue band. Plus if I get the audio for any sweet pumpup videos or the like, I throw those on their too. My friends and I love it. (As he sees this post he is probably laughing).
Here is my list for this year’s cd:
1 classic ABC theme music
2 Let it Rock
3 Put On For Your City – Young Jeezy
4 cowbell commercial
5 In the air tonight
6 Percussion Entranace – from zombienationpsu
7 Lion Fan Fare and Downfield
8 Almamatter
9 Floating lions drill
10 PSU Rock n roll
11 Parade Order from Alamo bowl
12 Penn State version of Dance to the music (rose bowl pep rally)
13 Boo gonk
14 Blue Band 7 Nation Army (from thon)
15 song 2 – the blur
16 Penn State Blue Band – hot boyz

White Stripes - 7 Nation Army
This seems to be the new go to song since we are going to break the stands if we play Zombie Nation too much.
Also….Blur – Song 2
PSU Softball
Going through my library, I picked out a few I'd love to hear
Come Together – Beatles (do they do this one already? Regardless, awesome song)
Hey Joe – Hendrix (not lyrically relevant at all, but it’s got Joe in the title and it kicks ass)
All Along the Watchtower – Hendrix (just sheer awesome)
Born to Run – Springsteen (aka The RollsRoyster Theme song)
Money – Pink Floyd (aka The Curley Song, or Ballad of Our Corporate Partners)
Cry Baby – Janis Joplin (aka Ode to Pryor)
Don’t Fear the Reaper- Blue®Oyster Cult (Who doesn’t need more cowbell?)
Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2 – Floyd (There is no name on my jersey)
Crazy Train – Ozzy (I think they do this one already)
Love Gun – Kiss (Who doesn’t love innuendo?)
Welcome to the Jungle – GnR (again, I think they do this one still)
You Really Got Me – Kinks (a good “we just sacked you” song)
Honky Tonk Women – Stones (Good sing along song)
Baba O’Riley/ Wont Get Fooled Again/ 5:15 – The Who (just great songs)
And pretty much any AC/DC song. Their music sounds increasingly better with added volume, and perfect for stadium speakers. There’s too many to list from them.
"September" - Earth Wind and Fire
I love when they play this during gthe pre-game in the Sep games
"If you let the men in you've got to let the women in. I don't want a bunch of women walking around in my locker room when guys take showers". Joe Paterno
I love that song.
It’s just ftw
"Want a donut go to dunkin donuts, want a linebacker go to Penn State."
- Cris Carter, NFL Draft, 4/25/09
everything by earth wind and fire is ftw.
Black Shoes. Basic Blues. No Name. All Game.
"Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the mouth."
By the way
Who the hell voted cake? Have you ever been to the creamery? Unless we’re talking RUTS’s chocolate peanut butter cake, creamery ice cream wins hands down.
I thought he meant the band.
NittanyWhiteOut.com. Arguably the second best Penn State blog I know of.
I was gonna say the same thing.
Let me know when we build a Cakery on campus (seriously, though, let me know. That sounds delicious. I would definitely go there, then to the Creamerie to get ice cream on top)

I know it's not the image the university wants
but I’m really surprised the food science dept. hasn’t made a brewery science major yet, especially with the rise of the microbrewery. It would be incredibly popular, but again, the university would probably look down on such a program of study, even though it’s entirely relevant to the food science department. Wouldn’t that be awesome though? We’ve got a University Creamery and a butcher shop, and then we’d have a University Brewery too. All we’d need is that cakery, and we’d never have to leave PSU again.
it would actually be a really good opportunity for them to teach responsible drinking
I mean it isn’t like I wasn’t taught (theoretically, on a chalkboard) how to make alcohol in my microbiology class, and heroine and meth in my chemistry classes.

Same here for alcohol in micro, and drugs in organic chemistry
O-chem actually scared me (not just the difficulty of the class) in how easy it is to make drugs. I remember looking at different kinds of drug structures on wikipedia (like opium) and then looking in my textbook, and seeing exactly what reactions I could use to make morphine, heroin or codeine (Of course the major problem associated with making any drug is getting the raw materials. Opium Poppys are something I would assume you don’t just pick up at Home Depot’s garden department). But it was easy to see why so many people are drawn into selling (or making) drugs, it may be high reward and high risk, but it’s also shockingly simple in some cases.
On my first day of o-chem lab my professor told all of us that the reactions we would be doing in class could potentially be used for illicit activities, and he did not want to see any of our faces on the 6 o’clock news.
Actually, they cover brewing in FD SC 413, Science of Plant Foods. You make your own beer/wine/sourdough bread/jelly in the lab.
There probably wouldn’t be enough course work for a major in brewery science, but you could probably talk them into having a brewery science class, if they had the professor for it…I’m not sure if they have a carbohydrate guy that would be up to it though.

In keeping with the....
Zombie tradition, they could play Dragula by Rob Zombie. The words have no relevance to a football game, but neither does Sweet Caroline. It provides a great opportunity to jump up and down in the stand, scream incoherently in unison, and would probably really scare the elderly in the crowd.

I would hate to see rap played
Don’t get me wrong I can listen to it in my car when no one else is around, but I hate hearing it at Beaver stadium. Let’s be honest Beaver stadium is like Mecca for white people (there shouldn’t be anything wrong with that), and the music naturally will reflect the target demographic.
Are you kidding me...
if whitey weren’t out there buying rap music, none of these guys would be multi-platinum.

But your sig reminded me of this skit from Mef n Red’s Blackout album:

I went to a predominantly white college.
And I have predominantly all white friends.
But at night, while all my white friends are asleep,

Its a little old now...
but was big back during the ’07 season. I believe it was used in one of the stadium videos.
Let's Go State
I have issues with...
Livi’n on a Prayer at The Beav. It sounds cool and all, but I’m get bothered by the lyrics. Who do we think we are Indiana?
Put a tarp on that circus! - showtime @ BSD
Ram Jam -Black Betty
Somewhere I Belong -Linkin Park
Oh What a Night -Four Seasons played after the 2005 Ohio State Game ( Never forget it)
Welcome to the Jungle Guns N Roses
We need more Enter Sandman Metallica and Possibly Unchained Van Halen at least the beginning of the song.
How do we get the Blue band to record a new CD with their newer additions to what they play at the games? I listen to the 2 that I have quite often. A little 7 Nation Army by the Blue Band would go a long way !!!!!!
"Believe deep down in your heart that you're destined to do great things." -Joe Paterno
7 Nation Army
I don’t think that would go real well on a CD. During games, they just play the verse over and over (not that there’s much else to the song). The song itself is pretty simple instrumentally, but made a little more complex with Jack White’s voice and lyrics, which would be very difficult to translate into pep band music IMO. If you listen to the song, other than the heavier bridges and slide guitar solos between verses, it’s essentially the same beat and riff for the whole 3-minute song.
But I totally agree, I’d love to have another Blue Band CD, maybe one with “Hey Baby” on it.
7 nation army
Ok maybe a couple bars of it. sort of like the defense Jaws chant version on one of the cd’s. There are some other newer (newer than 1995) blue band songs. I have posed this question in the past and there never seems to be any action on a new cd. Surely the university has the money to get a cd recorded.
"Believe deep down in your heart that you're destined to do great things." -Joe Paterno
I'm not sure where exactly it came from but,
there is definitely a Blue Band version of Hey Baby out there on the internet. My guess it was recorded at one of the Band-a-rama’s a while back.
Let's Go State
Probably
but we’re talking about material for a CD, and the two blue band cds don’t have Hey Baby on them, which would make for easier replay than trying to find a video to play loud through speakers during tailgates.

Yes, know your audience and all that
But really, the music isn’t for the old white people, anyway. They’re not going to like any of the music.
One song I’d love to hear is “Super Bon Bon” by Soul Coughing. It’s menacing but not scary (if we were going for scary, I mean, just cue up some Sepultura or something).
In the singalong genre, I nominate Biz Markie’s version of “Benny and the Jets”. It’s an old song, so the older people would know it, but it’s performed by a 300 pound slurring rapper. FTW. It’s casual and slow, but lets people still scream like idiots. As an added bonus, this was played during dinner at my wedding. For that matter, does anybody walking on this planet not sing along to “Just A Friend” (and dear lord, I love the brunette in that commercial)?
For instrumental purposes, half of the songs on The Go! Team’s first album would be great. Hell, if I wasn’t so lazy, I would’ve made one of those PSU pump-up videos to this song already.
Also, why not lay some tailgating footage over Jack McDuff’s “Hot Barbecue”? Show some happy-fan shots while playing that “It’s Love” song from the Heineken commercial.

You can go very wrong with Golden Girls. I was dating a chick for a few weeks and she said that she was a big GG fan (yes she called it that). I broke down and watched 2 with her and never called her again. It was the longest hour of television I’ve ever endured.

My personal suggestion...
I would like to see the song “Bright Lights, Big City” by MadCap on this list. For 2 reasons.
1st reason, because it genuinely gets me pretty amped, and a mixture of PSU football and this song just seems to fit to me.
2nd reason, because I think that it’s a nice shout out to T.Crier, after being “too country” to be graced by his fumbling presence. So it would obviously work for PSU vs. tO$U.

I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet
but I would LOVE to hear that Blue & White Rapper contestant Ra’s song blared over Beaver Stadium at least once.
I think Kake was the other one I liked.
