Offseason Time Killing: Improving the Music
So, I've had the idea for a while to throw together a long playlist of songs that could/should be played at Beaver Stadium. I do this only because, at this point, blaring music over the speakers rather than letting the Blue Band do their thing is just a reality we have to live with. If I have to live with it, at least it can be good, or at least not repetitive- if I have to hear "Song #2" 8,000 times a game again, I may turn homicidal.
A few notes before starting:
-Any song included here can be used by the PA system OR the Blue Band, I really don't care which.
-If you can destroy this blog by having too many hyperlinks, I very well might- I'm going to link to any videos of the mentioned songs, in case you don't know the songs/would like a nice day of youtubing music.
-I'm breaking the songs into categories, just to make sure my point in including the songs is somewhat obvious...being that if I explained each song, it may take years to read this.
-I'm not including songs that they already play. Because they already play them, you see.
-I realize we've already got one FanPost devoted to this, but I was half done...Sorry for overloading on the music, Mike/RUTS/Kevin
Things for Pre-Game
"Welcome Home" by Coheed and Cambria; "Man in the Box" by Alice in Chains; "Killer Tofu" by The Beets (why the hell not?); "Luno" by Bloc Party (also, the remix might be better, and the Youtube of it kinda sucks); "The Game" by Common; "Thunderhorse" by Dethklok (Yes.); "The Gauntlet" by Dropkick Murphys; "Less Talk, More Rokk" by Freezepop; "Geek Stink Breath" by Green Day; "(Gotta Get Some Action) Now!" by The Hellacopters (also, this); "Return the Favour" by The Hives (actually, 90% of their catalogue fits); "Holy Diver" by...Killswitch Engage; "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes; "Knights of Cydonia" by Muse; "Stickin' In My Eye" by NOFX; You're Gonna Go Far Kid" by The Offspring; "Steady As She Goes" by The Raconteurs; "List of Demands" by Saul Williams; "Bad Reputation" by The .45s; "Goin Out West" by Tom Waits; "Ruby Soho" by Rancid; "Kickstart My Heart" by Motley Crue; Everything Rage Against the Machine has ever made; "Sandstorm" by Darude (That's right- play the song, don't let it build and play a roar); and I include this with much shame.
Instrumentalish stuff for Stadium Videos
"Metal Gear May Cry"; "Panic Song" by Green Day; "Seven Notes in Black"; "Mortal Kombat".
Songs that are somehow related to rainy weather
"No Rain" by Blind Melon; "November Rain" by G'nR; "Here Comes the Rain Again" by The Eurythmics; "Make It Rain" by Fat Joe (I'll be honest, I just want to see the reaction to this getting played); "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" by Garbage.
A few more thoughts for when it snows...
Anything by Snow Patrol, and, of course, "Informer" by Snow.
Possibilities for Sing Alongs so we can let the Red Sox keep "Sweet Caroline" and try to be somewhat original
"Hey Jude" by The Beatles; "Long Time" by Boston; "Everlong" by Foo Fighters; "Leaving Town" by Dexter Freebish; "Take Me Home Tonight" by Eddie Money; "Hey Jealousy" by Gin Blossoms; "Lola" by The Kinks; "Army" by Ben Folds (radio edit!), and something I doubt would get approval, but would fit wonderfully, "Beer" by Reel Big Fish.
So, those are my humble suggestions to the playlist, but I know I don't know all when it comes to music- there's definitely room for improvement in the weather sections. Thoughts? If you have any additions, I could add them to the list, and we could get a master list of music going. Hey, the offseason is long. Zug help us.

Seriously Fugi, I had this half done, and really didn’t want to waste all that time of hyperlinking. My apologies.

As far as RBF songs go
The GMason band played Take on Me and it was beautiful. I wish we had a band as pimptacious.

haha, Lola
Great song, and I’m sure like, “Have You Ever Seen The Rain?”, 90% of the people know the song, but I’m not sure we want 109,000 people singing about getting seduced by a tranny, as funny as that might be.

can we all just agree
that there’s no need for the ‘living on a prayer’ by Bon Jovi? Every time that song comes on I am filled with rage at the suggestion that the team is ‘living on a prayer’.

Does anyone actually know why that became a Penn State anthem? I end up smiling whenever I hear it because it reminds me of Dear Old State, but I’ve never known why that always got thrown in there.

Anthem?
Fight song, Alma mater, and the Nittany lion are the only “anthems” I know of that we currently use.

I can think of very few nights out where I didn’t hear that song, and when I asked, as a wide-eyed freshman, I was told it was an anthem…obviously, not to the degree of the things you mentioned.

Ohhhhhhhh - We're Half Way There
they usually play this right before half time. I think it has more to do being half way to victory than livining on a prayer.

I'm in college, and I didn't know half of those songs
So you’re not alone, there. Although, I’d have to disagree with any country music being played in the Beav. Both because I hate country music, and that would not help any image of us being “too country”. We may have a country history, but our modern football history was born in the age of rock and roll.

FWIW, “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky” is a country song, I think, just being covered by a punk band.

I don't know if anyone did it before he did
but Johnny Cash did (Ghost) Riders in the Sky. However, I honestly consider Cash more folky than country, despite which section his music is put in at stores.

Ram Jam -Black Betty
Somewhere I Belong -Linkin Park
Oh What a Night -Four Seasons played after the 2005 Ohio State Game ( Never forget it)
Welcome to the Jungle Guns N Roses
We need more Enter Sandman Metallica and Possibly Unchained Van Halen at least the beginning of the song.
How do we get the Blue band to record a new CD with their newer additions to what they play at the games? I listen to the 2 I have quite often. A little 7 Nation Army by the Blue Band would go a long way !!!!!!

On a dark Pennlive forum, dumbasses everywhere
Warm smell of talkbackers, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There he stood in the doorway;
I heard Pryor crying
And I was thinking to myself,
this could be heaven or this could be hell
Then he lit up a candle and he showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say…
Welcome to Black Shoe Diaries
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at Black Shoe Diaries
Any time of year, Graham Zug posts are here
His mind is Cornley-related, he got the big recommends
He knows a lot of pretty, pretty girls that they say sound hot
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget
So I called up the captain,
please bring me Ed Hightower
He said, we haven’t had that spirit here since Cornley smashed his ass
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say…
Welcome to Black Shoe Diaries
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at Black Shoe Diaries
What a nice surprise, bring some more bacon
Mirrors on the ceiling,
S.O.A.‘s unamused
And he said we are all just prisoners here, of our own device
And in the master’s grotto,
Fugi gathered for the feast
He stabbed it with his steely knife,
But he just can’t kill Curley
Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
relax, said the night man,
We are programmed to receive.
He can ask for help anytime he likes,
But Rambler’s photoshops will never be good!

I would wonder about playing Enter Sandman being a VA resident and having friends at VA Tech I could see us getting a lot of heat if that was to be played!
Some other good songs:
Hell’s Bells By AC DC
For Whom the Bell Tolls by Metallica
Fuel by Metallica
Black Betty
Gotta stay with some Journey Don’t Stop Believing just for fun and to remind of the good days and make it fun!

god, yes, they are obsessed with Journey, especially Don't Stop Believing
almost as much as Jersey is obsessed with Bon Jovi or Bruce.
And of course the “born and raised in SOUTH DETROIT” is yelled louder than any other part of the song in bars.

Journey makes me want to
stick a red hot poker in my eye to make the pain of Steve Perry’s voice go away.
I am embarrased everytime I hear Living on a Prayer played in Beaver Stadium.
Sweet Caroline and every other song “owned” by another team needs to be avoided unless we want to look like someone’s little brother.
Votech plays the hell out of Enter Sandman and The Badgers are known for Jump Around.

Jump Around
I hate it when they play that after a big play. I just don’t like the song and it ruins my mood after something good happens. I agree, Sweet Caroline needs to be replaced, Sox already do that and everyone knows it. Zombie Nation has to stay, it gets everyone pumped up and going.
Maybe they could fit in “In the air tonight” by Phil Collins (last 2 minutes-ish) or “The art of losing” by American Hi-Fi, fast paced song, pumps me up when I listen to it and includes the words “Hey ho let’s go I’m gonna start a riot”. I’d say it would be accepted pretty quickly.

Sing alongs.
“Take Me Home Tonight” would be perfect for a sing along if you ask me. However, I am partial to anything Reel Big Fish, Everlong is one of the best songs ever written, and I seem to have a weakness for the Gin Blossoms. So I could see getting rowdy to any of those songs.
Also, if we want to pump up 110,000 people we could always just try and get them to play the video of D. Butler before the 08 OSU game. Radio edit of course.

Ole’ is is a ready made crowd sing along.
Although they are a New Brunswick band I couldn’t find any liks to Rutgers playing their music during games. Nike might have a problem with the end of the first line.
