Half The Battle
Yes, recruiting appears to be going very well. But when recruits become registered college students and the stars assigned by Scout and Rivals disintegrate into dust, always remember that potential is a fickle, fickle bitch.
Even if you can run through class Quad-A competition like Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson.

There was no better way
to start this thread. This photo is literally on my clip board already, but I should have known better.

in the year 2004
we would have looked at this as a promotional poster for the future greatness of Penn State football. I don’t know if such a core part of a football team can undergo any more of a reversal.

Is there any way we can convince Rivals or Scout to use this as their main photo?
or at least as a disclaimer?

2002
That clip reminds me of Bethlehem Catholic from 2002. They rank among the greatest Pennsylvania h.s. football teams that never won anything. All because of Austin Scott, who tore them apart the week after this clip in what was the de facto state championship game.

A good reminder to keep your head, when following recruiting, RUTS
It’s good we’re getting who we want in terms of recruits, but how they pan out, good or bad (be it trouble or EPIC SUCK, etc.) is a totally different story. The one benefit that I do see from this class is that we’re taking in (potentially anyway) multiple highly touted kids. We’re building depth with talent instead of walk-ons (no offense to Little Red). We’ve proven that we have the ability to turn 2 star players into 1st team all-big10 players, so hopefully we can continue to develop high level talent into the same mold, and I have no doubt that we can, despite some failures in the past (which may or may not have been our fault: See Rambler’s first post above).
The one thing I can say about Austin Scott is he may have been better, but he lacked discipline. Remember him taking over when Hunt went down in the Orange Bowl in 05, he looked good, but then he didn’t come back in shape, and he got benched, and rightfully so. He may have had the talent, but I guess attitude is the trump card, especially at PSU. I’m sorry his career ended the way it did, especially since it damaged his image to have a career in the pros (even though that didn’t work out. The wikipedia quote from the Browns coach said, “he had trouble grasping the offense and lacked a will to achieve”), but he wasn’t cut out to make it at PSU.

Austin had 90% of his yards on one drive against Florida State
Whatever our coaches saw on that drive, Mickey Andrews fixed it pretty quickly.

Umm, no offense to Zug?

Zug was actually recruited by us, but refused the scholarship
he wanted to walk on for the challenge, so I don’t consider him a true walk-on. Plus the very notion of the phrase “walk-on” is an insult to his power.

Recruiting is half the battle. And if Knowing is also half the battle, then why isn’t Antonio Logan-El our starting LT this year?

i envoke my previous fanpost
the only 4 or 5 star kid on offense from the last 5 years that has done anything, ANYTHING for us is DWill. The rest were complete and total disasters.

You're 95% right
There have been a few linemen that have panned out, but your overall point is spot on.

AQ was a four star wasn't he? Wiz has also been an asset.
Some of the WRs were 4 star guys. Granted they weren’t starting or anything, but they haven’t been flops (Powell, Moye).
But yes, the majority have flopped, especially the 5* guys.

Well from what I heard...
Being from a fellow District XI school, he could do no wrong there. They said he was even caught selling drugs small time and didn’t have anything happen. I feel like we are past the point where we have more busts than outstanding players.
There is someone on Scout that has a great quote from Adrian Coxson. It was when he committed and he said he will strive not only to help us win a National Championship but to also be a true student-athlete. For whatever reason I think we have been recruiting a group of guys who are more committed to football than they are to college life and its pitfalls.
Not saying we won’t have future incidents, I just think we are pass the time where they all happen around the same period making it look like the team is a runaway train.

I agree (I think)...
that this class, while full of highly recruited athletes, seems to be full of good citizens. I hope in 4-5 years we can say the same thing and PSU can further distance itself from OTL nonsense.

Hah
That video shows him running against Freedom… I went there. And if that was his senior season I was probably in the band you hear in the background as well. Scott was freakin amazing.

Everyone was sure he would run for 5,000 yards in his PSU career
And after watching his highlights tapes (not only the one above, but the others on YouTube and elsewhere), who could really argue?
You just never know how a kid is going to react to a party school environment.

which is why Tony Hunt remains my favorite PSU player. He came in to a situation where he was backup to the golden boy, and while Scott partied and slacked off, Hunt worked hard. Hunt not only got the starting job, he became one of the all-time great PSU RB’s. If we didn’t have Hunt in that lineup I’m afraid to think how differently things would have gone for us, especially in 2006 when he was the entire offense. I’ll never forget the play against Minny when he had to smash through one our own guys to get into the endzone in a game we barely won in OT.

- Israeli new media company
- object placed in a horse’s mouth to direct the animal
- unit of money in various currencies
- small ethnic group in northern Laos
- Mon-Khmer language spoken by said ethnic group
- excerpt of material from a standup comedian’s repertoire
- remote-controlled space weapon in the fictional Universal Century Technology of the Mobile Suit Gundam anime metaseries
- defunct Taiwanese video game company
- character from the film Tron.
