A little harsh
And he is entitled to his beliefs even though we know we will have players ready to step up on the D-Line.
But at least he made solid points without saying “OMG THEIR COACH IS OLD AND TEAM GETS IN TROUBLE.” I have no problem with people expressing their opinions about us if they actually think it through. But at the same time I will refuse to agree with it.
And I think we can all agree that we are a little nervous about our secondary and offensive line against the good teams like Ohio State. But here’s to Clark proving them wrong.
And yes, it is funny that he is counting one of our losses to be against Michigan. That part was far-fetched.
The d-line will not be a weakness, and who in the Big Ten will actually have a passing game?
Michigan? True freshman or a terrible walk-on. Michigan State? New starter. Northwestern? Kafka’s more of a runner. Ohio State? Pryor’s got a way to go and so do his receivers. Iowa? Probably, but I don’t think it’s going to be that impressive. Minnesota? Again, probably. Weber and Decker are both back. Illinois? Benn is going to embarass us. Indiana? Um, no.
And I really don’t think the offensive line’s going to be that bad, and after Iowa they’ve got a long time to get ready for Ohio State.

I have previously requested (and I don't have the skill to do it justice myself, or I'd try)
a photoshop of Crawford with a top hat and monocle. And something of quality, not thrown together in five minutes (no offense to your fast first attempts Rambler, normally when you have time, like maybe ten minutes, you live up to your Workingman’s Photoshopper title instead of "Jagged edged, unproportional Zug head pasted on [insert item of awesomeness here]).
“Jagged edged, unproportional Zug head pasted on [insert item of awesomeness here]” is the definiton of a Workingman’s Photoshop.
And, BTW, I’m working on the Crawford photo. Just got to find some good pics…

My first impression:
Looks more like a pirate, add a parrot on his shoulder, and you have a random, but funny representation of Crawford.
Half-assed indeed.
I think the top hat could be more prominant
(and perhaps the abe-lincoln blue/green top hat?)
As for the monocle: I think having his bandana/doo-rag on makes it hard to make the monocle obvious.

Anyhow, bennies are the visitors, usually from NY, who come “down the shore” in the summer in their IROCs and BWMs with their Rick Astley blasting and act like they own the place. They clog traffic, clog the grocery stores wandering around lost, talk loud on their cellphones while in restaurants, telling all their friends what a great time they’re having “down the shore” – how drunk they got last night, how they’re gonna hit the beach early tomorrow and get real tan. It gets real old after about 2 weeks and the locals start counting down the days when Labor Day arrives and life returns to normal. Actually, “Go home Benny” is a very common thing heard being yelled from car windows as they drive around lost or “checking out the chicks”. In case you care, BENNY comes from “Bayonne, Elizabeth, Newark, New York” – the label that was on the luggage when they used to come down on the train.
So much for no rant, huh? This is nothing – wait til late August!

Ok - fine
I’m ok with this so long as they apply the same logic to Ohio State. They are 7th in returning starts on O-line, have a worse (and very young) QB, no proven RB, and they lose their stars at WR, LB, and CB.
Something tells me they’ll use the “but they’re Ohio State” line and somehow they’ll be picked to be awesome. Whatever.
Here’s another point: this logic would mean we should have been awesome in 2007 with all our stars and a good O-line. Except we had QB14. So let’s not pretend O-lines automatically win you games without a competant QB in the backfield.

It's been driving me nuts as well
All the experts are quick to point out how much talent PSU lost, but are completely ignoring the fact that OSU was hit just as bad(if not worse) by graduation and players leaving for the NFL. At least we returned some of our stars. Unfortunately what we have to accept is that OSU gets the benefit of doubt in the rankings that we no longer get. OSU’s recent history has been strong (6 BCS bowls in 7 years and only falling below 10 wins once in that span) and the pollsters look at that and assume that they’ll just continue that success this year (without anything to really support that prediction). Meanwhile, PSU is just 4 seasons removed from an awful 5 year stretch and while we’ve had two great seasons since then, the other two years have been decent but not anything special. Now, there was a time back in the eighties and nineties when we got the benefit of the doubt, and maybe if we build on last season and continue to finish in the top ten consistently, we can get that kind of respect again.
the kind of respect we got in 1968, 1969, 1973, and 1994?
by The JuggerNitt on Jun 8, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions
The 60's and 70's we were probably less respected than we are now
Yeah, we were disrespected in 94, but I feel like we were more respected in the 90’s than we are today. Around that time we were pretty much a preseason top 10 team most years. Plus 94 had as much to do with getting burned by the whole “poor Tom Osborne has never won a national title” attitude that the MSM took on.
So let’s not pretend O-lines automatically win you games without a competant QB in the backfield.
Which is why I’m not worried about UM even though, like, this.
I'm sick of reading articles about how Michigan is definitely going to turn things around this year
because DickRod always wins in his second year. I looked up his coaching record, and yeah he did go 9-4 in his second year at WVU, but at Glenville State he went 4-5-1 in his second year and at Salem, he only couched one year. So I guess if he turned 1/3 of the teams he coached at around in his second year, that’s the same as always.
So it's 50/50
they might be good, he might quit. Neither would suprise me all that much.
At Michigan is tough, even if we’re better (see 2007, and save the Morelli crucifixtion).

I mean even 2005
I think Michigan was 3-3 that year, and we had the chance to give them their first losing record that deep in a season in some ridiculously long time. Meanwhile we were 6-0, and suffered our only loss at their hands, in their friggen stadium (with their friggen refs, too, apparently).

That has to be one of the most painful games I've ever watched
mainly for the bullshit that went on, and for :02s. This is excluding a great deal of 2006/07 obviously. Maybe 2nd to this previous season’s loss, when I was desperately hoping to see DWill (and all the seniors for that matter who faced to heartbreaking in 2005) rewarded with a MNC run for the faith he showed in our program, and the prominence he’s helped restore it to.
ehh
1. We ain’t Clemson. They always suck. Frankly, their tradition is that every year people think that they are going to be good, and then they figure out a way to suck. And that’s every year. When it comes to Clemson, believe it when you see it, and not one second before.
2. If you count the tight end position as on the offensive line, we return half our offensive line. If you don’t we return 40% of it. One of the returning starters is going to be first team all Big Ten. None of our projected starters are freshman or sophmores. Barring injury we’re fine on the offensive line.
3. LInebackers? Yeah, Lee and Bowman. They may be our best one two at linebacker ever.
4. D-Line? You can keep god, in Larry Johnson Sr I trust.
5. Secondary? Same as always. Lots of catchs, yards and complaining.
The only place we take a substantial step backward is at wide out. How that affects the line and DC17 is the question, and in my mind the only serious one.

I'm with Jesse
What’s wrong in saying they’ll take a step back? It’s not that I don’t trust them or think they’re going to be good, but we just lost 3 of the all-time wr leaders at Penn State…you most likely aren’t going replace that.
by Screen Name 20 on Jun 9, 2009 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions
That wasn't his argument
He argued that the losses on the offensive line were more important. Technically, he’s correct. Except, I think that the fact that we are returning two guys and that we’re not looking for contibution out of any freshman or sophomores makes the offensive line issue a bit of a red herring.
Turnover is expected, it’s when you don’t have anybody in the wings is where you get in trouble. I am way more worried about the replacements at wide-out than I am on the line. Notwithstanding that, jtothep is right.
"I honestly think the "Spread HD" is going to work pretty well, and we’ll be just fine this year". - 8-27-2008
Ok, gotcha
Then I’m agreeing with him. Although we aren’t looking for any major contribution from Fr/So, we still have to worry about the cohesion of the OL…it all starts up front. It basically took all of 2007 for our line to turn into a great group and carry that over to 2008.

It is hard, since predicting Penn State this year, they could easily go through a large range of "records"
I see them as a probably a 10-2 team, but could almost as easily see them 11-1 or 9-3, and not that far off from 12-0 or 8-4. There are a bunch of “what ifs” on the team, but for each specific player the basement isn’t that low. It is just that if every one of our (small) question marks only performs at their basement level, then that question mark will become very big.
There’s also the issue that people are just looking at returning starters without realizing that most of them had a lot of playing time last year, just didn’t happen to be on the field for the first series, and that a lot of these younger guys are potentially better athletes than the guys they are replacing. I almost find it laughable that people would question our defensive front 7. I understand the criticism of our WRs and secondary, but don’t see that being a big problem through pretty much our entire schedule. Our Offensive Line is probalby our second biggest weakness, but it looks like we’ll have enough real game experience before we face anyone of consequence.
I think most people will agree that the game against Iowa will likely predict how the rest of the season will go. If we struggle hard against them (and god forbid lose) then that could torpedo our confidence and season, but if we treat them like we treated every other team on our schedule from last year (other than OSU and USC) then we have 1 roadblock to a 12-0 regular season.
People keep doing this similar analysis of Penn State for next year, but it doesn’t seem that they’re doing the same analysis for other teams, who have all lost just as much, if not more than we have (except appaently have more “experienced” offensive lines…I’m sure Indiana’s 84 returning crappy starts are really going to pose a problem for us…)
I’m sure Indiana’s 84 returning crappy starts are really going to pose a problem for us…)
That’s one of the problems in the “returning starts” analysis. When just looking at a # of returning starts, it does nothing to determine the quality of those starters.
by Screen Name 20 on Jun 9, 2009 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions
Just for the hell of it
and to waste some time, I went back to look at returning offensive line starts for PSU this decade. Obviously, there are other factors that determine how well a team will play, so this isn’t the only variable, but in my highlly scientific analysis using this and only this variable, returning offensive line starts does seem to be correlated to our “great” seasons this decade…
Year / Returning Starts / Lost starts
2008 / 88 / 14: Returned 4 starters with at least 12 games starting experience
2005 / 79 / 6: Returned 3 starters with at least 12 games starting experience
2002 / 64 / 15: Returned 3 starters with at least 12 games starting experience
I threw 2002 in there b/c I still feel that was an 11 win team (cough) instant reply (cough). In those other years we returned less than 45 starts and only returned 1 starter with at least a year’s starting experience. In those years we had good seasons (2007, 2008) and bad seasons (2000,2001,2003,2004).
Considering we only have 38 starts and 2 players with 12+ starts returning, are we due for another “good” year? One could argue that we have better players now, and the lack of OL returning starts will be negated by better skill players, and that the only thing kept us from “great” seasons in 2007/2008 was #14.
by Screen Name 20 on Jun 9, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions
I think what will save us the most
is that our O-line will have practically the whole season to get better against slightly increasing competition before we play any tough teams (namely O$U and our bowl opponent). The biggest hurdle (and what I think will be the indicator of how the season turns out) will be the Iowa game in Week 4, since we’re not only have a comparatively novice, potentially incohesive line, but we also face the first “real” team of the season after playing 3 cupcakes.
by The JuggerNitt on Jun 9, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree, Iowa will be the predictor
By the way, other than a stellar defense, are they going to be a threat offensively at all? I know they have a returning QB, but lost their best RB, and from what I remember, there wasn’t all that much of a passing game to speak of, other than questionable pass interference calls and uncalled intentional groundings.
Jewel Hampton will be good, Bryan Baluga is a pancake machine, the tight ends are good when healthy, and the receivers should be okay.
So, Iowa. Same as usual, really.

So basically, they're a solid team
but even if some of our offensive fears come true, this will really be a defensive low-scoring battle, with the exception that it won’t be 20 below zero with 20 mph wind gusts in beaver stadium, otherwise we might be overreacting to Iowa.
Lets try to get our hopes up for an offensice explosion.
Do we really need to start predicting a defensive struggle between these teams? I mean they do have a certain history with those types of games*.
- and by ‘those types of games’ I mean an absolute affront to modern day football.
"Even though it was bouncing, I knew it was so soft that it was just going to stay in," Battle said. "Then I ran around like a lunatic."
Trust me
Maybe it’s the kool aid, but I think we’ll beat them this year. We have too much bad history to not make this a vengeance game for the debacles of the past, and I think Clark is going to make sure he motivates this team to somehow repay the fans for last year’s disappointment that I think he thinks he owes us, even if it wasn’t really his fault.
You're Goddamn Right He Owes Us
And so is he. And so does Joe. And Joe owes Pat.
And we all owe Iowa.
There’s a veritable metric assload of debt to be collected in that game.

The more I think about it, the more I think we would have won if we had played Devlin. We came out with a conservative gameplan (excluding the first series). We ran the ball more than any other time that year.
But despite the conservative game plan, similar to ‘07 Michigan, we were in position to win the game. Against Michigan, Morelli missed a wide open Butler in the end zone early in the game and it was all down hill from there. Against Iowa, I think Devlin could have and would have made the plays to win the game that Clark didn’t. I don’t think Devlin would have thrown that last interception.

Not to be cliche, but hindsight is 20/20
I’d take a fully healthy (and just coming off the rush of a game winning score at tOSU) Devlin over concussed DC-17 (minus the fist pump to make it fair). We made mistakes, both players and coaches, and whoever built Kinnick stadium to allow 20 mph winds blow onto the field, it’s partially their fault too. It didn’t happen, we lost, it’s in the past. I say this still remembering the pain of watching and almost punching a hole in my dorm desk over that game, and it will still hurt, just like 2005 did, and every other year that almost was, but there’s nothing that can be done but to get our vengeance this year.
And all we non-football players can do is to be there to make sure Ferentz and their whole god forsaken team know why we are so passionate about our school by screaming our heads off, and helping our team get one step closer to what almost was last year, this year.

yeah, it isn't like we didn't know there were still problems with Clark
considering we had DWill lined up in the Wildcat so often, it was obvious they were protecting Clark from having to run it.
But heck, even the first drive, you could tell things were wrong (the fumble), and plenty of other plays as well. Of course it is a bit hard to tell if it was the concussion, the “trap game” aspect, or the weather, but as I said, the concussion definitely changed our gameplan, so why not just use Devlin?

Wouldn't going to a 2-TE formation bolster the O-line, if necessary?
I believe we have two or three good tight ends. Aren’t those players “work horses” by any measure?
(Seriously, I’d like to know.)
Also, Minnesota and Michigan are overrated in that scenario. (Also, the only Lions who might face Shonn Greene this year are in Detroit.) After Ohio State, Penn State’s toughest games will likely be Michigan State and Northwestern.
June 10 prediction: 10-2, +/- 1.
