The Herd
Not sure who listens, but Colin Cowherd just bashed us (rightfully so) for our OOC schedule. Its so frustrating that we are going to be hearing this all season long, especially the longer we go undefeated. Whats worse is that we do this in basketball as well. Why we cant just schedule real teams is beyond me. They dont even have to be THAT good. A middle of the pack Big East team would be better than the crap we keep scheduling.

It feels like we've heard this a thousand times before...
and the sad part is, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I have already come to grips with the fact that a 1 loss Alabama, Florida, USC, or even Oklahoma is going to get a BCS title shot before us, even if we are undefeated. I can get over that for now… but I could do without the constant bashing of our OOC schedule. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, it’s not our fault Syracuse shat out on us.
I guess it’s just a good thing that today is the one day this week that I didn’t listen to The Herd.

+1, and yes.
My brother called me today all excited that Cowherd was going to say something inflammatory about PSU, which rather obviously was going to be about the schedule. So CC ranted for a minute or three about how embarrassing it is and that he’d never put PSU in the national championship game even if they were 12-0. Well, no shit. Either would I. Either would anyone else with a brain unless there was some serious multi-loss carnage at the top of the polls, or unless PSU had one of those 1994 years where they were just kicking the crap out of every single opponent by 30+ points (which isn’t going to happen anyway).
In other words, Colin Cowherd ranted like a lunatic for three minutes and the nation (including PSU fans) yawned. Big deal.

And I must say...
I’m rather proud of the reactions I’ve seen (both here and elsewhere) from PSU fans about the schedule, not that it’s really defensible, anyway. If PSU goes 12-0, unless the Big Ten improves in a major, unforeseen way this season, they probably shouldn’t be a top-two team when BCS time rolls around.
But if MSU and Michigan beat Notre Dame, and Ohio State beats USC, etc., maybe it’ll get interesting for whoever ends up winning the conference.
(I don’t really see any undefeated Big Ten teams out there, btw.)

As for our schedule
Even if Syracuse and Temple and Akron went undefeated, we would still get no respect because of the strength of their conferences… I know it’s not going to happen, but I’m sure we’d hear something to the affect of:
“There’s no way they could have known when they scheduled them how good they were going to be.”
but when WE say
“There’s no way we could have known when we scheduled them how bad they were going to be.”
we’re still stupid. I hate it.

2009 Texas Longhorns schedule:
Ul-Monroe
at Wyoming
UTEP
Central Florida
LOLCFN says: “To be fair, Texas tried to put together a decent non-conference schedule but didn’t get many breaks.”
2009 Penn State schedule:
Akron
Syracuse
Temple
Eastern Illinois
LOLCFN says: “The non-conference slate is a jaw-dropping embarrassment for a superpower playing Akron, Syracuse, Temple and Eastern Illinois.”

Does anyone else
think that maybe we get ragged on for our OOC schedule because we don’t beat up on teams like USC, Texas, or Florida does? I mean, if we were consistently winning by 50 or 60 points against these cupcakes I just feel like we would be talked about differently. But alas, this is one of the reasons why I love our Nittany Lions. They’ll go out there and play they’re “Success with Honor” brand of football. And when it starts to get out of hand, the second team will come in, and continue to dominate.
I can deal with the smack talk I guess, because it only makes the arrival of the season even better (if that’s even possible).

Didn't help last season
It always bothered me that that was never mentioned. Its one thing to squeak by Temple its another to stomp on them 45-3, same for Costal Carolina (66-10), Syracuse (55-13), and the team we DID ABSOLUTELY NOT EVER PLAY AND DID NOT AT ALL ALMOST WIN THE PAC10 (45-14).
Even with a soft big 10 last year we won 6 of the 8 games by 2 touchdowns or more…still no mention of margin of victory even when those dreaded s*y!e p@i^ts were talked about.

Yay, more schedule bashing!
Must be a slow sports news day for Coward. I told a guy at work that this horse will be beaten to death before the season even kicks off. The way people are bitching about it and pointing at PSU, it’s like no other major program has ever scheduled such a crappy OOC slate. Whatever…
Scheduling side note: Being that I’m in Va Tech territory, I keep hearing these rumblings of a rumor that VT and PSU are batting around the idea of doing a kickoff classic at Soldier Field or in DC next year. Has anybody on the PSU side of things caught wind of this rumor? I told the Chokies that it’s unlikely we’d agree to such a game considering we’re already putting a freshman QB out against Ala-frickin-zOMGsofast-Saban-bama next season, but I’m curious if there is any validity to this deal. It would be awesome, and would definitely shut people up with regards to OOC scheduling.

Not sure where in DC
The people I talk to don’t have a lot of details. Again, this may be pure hype from the Tech folks, which is why I’m trying to confirm it from our side. Their schedule next year looks as miserable as ours does this year, and I think they are in desperation mode. It could just be one of those rumors that all started with a blog post where somebody said “hey, maybe PSU would be an awesome fit on next year’s schedule” and it could have easily snowballed into “Hey, Tech and PSU are trying to work something out!”
One guy I work with still swears that Tech tried to schedule PSU a few years ago but we wouldn’t do it. These folks will trip all over any rumor that catches fire. I still clown that dude over KNew.

Whats funny about this
is that its almost as though the MSM is picking a fight and no one cares. Its like this is the conversation that happens:
Media: PSU Schedule is embarrasing
PSU Fan: Yea it is
Media: No, like, really embarrasing
PSU Fan: I know its disgusting
Media: No but like its so embarrasing that if you go 12-0 you shouldnt play in the championship
PSU Fan: I totally agree
Its strange. Its almost as if, they have a quota that they must insult at least one B10 member every day, and Ohio State has USC so you cant kill them, and yesterday they talked about Iowa’s off field troubles, so today harp on our OOC schedule again, Lather, Rinse, Repeat and so forth.
This quota is so bad, sometimes they even ironically kill Northwestern’s OOC schedule, and in the same breath use Northwestern as a reason that the B10 In-Conference schedule is so poor.

IF we were to absolutely dominate
in ALL of our conference games (NO close calls, OTs, etc.), then I could possibly see that. It could come down to if tOSU blows it again against U$C though, or somehow the rest of the conference (that we play at least) decides not to suck. Even if we completely kick ass, including ruining Pryor’s lolHeismanRun by embarrassing tOSU, and go 12-0, it’s probably not going to happen, and even if the planets aligned and that did happen, we’d still get ragged on, and most likely not make it because of our OOC SOS.

Actually
Before Iowa we were less than a hundredth of a point behind Texas Tech, and significantly ahead of Texas and Florida. If we’d have gone undefeated last year, we would have been first in the BCS going into the bowls.
Let’s face it; if we could have made it last year, we could make it any year there aren’t two or more undefeated teams. (That’s how Penn State usually got screwed out of the title game historically: too many undefeated teams for one game.)
by Aaron PSU on Jul 2, 2009 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
this year is significantly harder than last year
the Big 10 looked terrible in their bowls (only 1 win), after everyone was already criticizing the Big 10 for being weak, and wanting to keep PSU out of the title game even if they were undefeated (ie, wanted a 1 loss SEC or Big 12 team to jump us). This year we don’t even have Oregon State to lessen the mockery of our OOC SOS, combined with an even weaker view of the Big 10 (especially since the 2 best teams, OSU and PSU, are considered to be worse than last year with all the position losses).
Mid season rankings don’t matter, it is the end of the regular season poll that matters, and if the voters wanted us out, they very easily could find a reason vote that way (such as “wow, they really won that conference championship game”). Heck, they don’t even need to give a reason. See 1994 with a bunch of votes switching over to Nebraska.
So yeah, I wouldn’t have been surprised (angry yes, but not surprised) if we were jumped last year, and I definitely won’t be surprised if it happens this year.

RE: 19994
Screw Kordell Stewart, screw Westbrook, and screw Michigan for not knocking that ball down. Nebraska may not have jumped us if CU hadn’t been No. 2 and unbeaten when NU beat them (Even though we utterly thrashed No. 21 Ohio State that week.)
