Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Wannstedt has a monstrous challenge recruiting against schools such as Penn State and Ohio State, where the gameday atmospheres dwarf what you'll see at Heinz Field.

"That's what we fight against with the whole Big Ten," Wannstedt said. "There's nothing we can do about that. The whole Big Ten, they use that as a major recruiting tool. As we get better, we'll fill the house."

As we get better, we’ll fill the house.

Hell, they probably didn’t even sell out back in ’81 during the regular season before they got blasted by Penn State.

I was cruising over on Pitt Blather

He posted about their QB deficiencies for the fall. He got 40 comments…..14 commenters changed the subject to basketball. (About 75% of his posts are about basketball anyway!) They really don’t care about football at Pitt anymore!

Of course, I guess BSD gets off the topic when we talk about Bacon, Booze or Babes (or hunks for those of you that like to oogle the manly types)!

And, as for Pitt becoming basketball-oriented at the expense of the football team...

…Well, yeah, why do you think they destroyed old Pitt Stadium, built a basketball arena on top of it, and sent the football team over to Heinz?

They destroyed Pitt Stadium

because it was an armpit. However, Pitt will never be relevant playing in a rented stadium…even if they are across the hall from the Stillers. They eventually would need an on-campus facility….and that probably will never happen since there is no space (unless you go to Panther Hollow) and no $$$. (Empty, gold seats don’t make much revenue).

So they are doomed to try to make it as a B-Ball school.

RE: armpit

I know, I know. But there’s still some kind of symbolism in destroying the on-campus footbal stadium so they could build a fancy new on-campus basketball arena.

However, I agree with your comment.

Taking the team off campus ripped the soul out of Oakland.

Oakland is a neat place. If you hang out there enough you can start to get a feel for how fun it would have been for a football game. Obviously, it would be different than Penn State. You wouldn’t tailgate so much as go to bars and the like. But imagine for a second that East Halls was built on top of the Rathskellar, and Beaver Stadium was on Old Main lawn. Which is kind of like how it was set up for Pitt football before Heinz Field.

I ask you because I don't know myself

Is there room anywhere on the Pitt campus to build a football stadium?

There is a little "valley" that cuts through Oakland...aptly named Panther Hollow.

There has been some discussion that might be a great place for the Patheroos. However, it’s hard for me to believe that would be practical. It would take oodles of $$$ to prep the site, let alone build a 15,000 seat stadium there.

It is an interesting concept. It would sit down there like the old stadium in Morgantown. Oakland was always a hopping place on a Saturday afternoon after a PITT game.

I guess you’re right about the fancy thing… But as much as I hate to admit, I go to pitt for grad school now, and their arena is nothing compared to the BJC.
