Scirrotto Blows "Cover" On PSU Secondary

Well it sounds Like Anthony Scirrotto is having a tough time adjusting to the game in the NFL.  No, he says it's not the speed of the game that bothers him (thank god he played in the b10, if it were the Ess Eee Speed he would have to adjust to how slow the NFL is).

Scirrotto is having trouble with the mental aspect of the game.  In his own words, "we were pretty basic at Penn State."  You don't say.  Backpaddling fast and hard at every snap is "pretty basic?"  You don't say.

someone needs to learn some reading comprehension skills before posting

since first off I see zero criticism of Scirrotto in the post, nor in the article, and the only “negative” thing is basically a direct quote by Scirrotto himself that the schemes he learned while at PSU were very basic, and far below what is expected in the NFL.

Not sure if you are young, or old, but this was the first “shitty” comment I saw in this thread so far. Next time before you call someone stupid, sit down for a second, re-read what got you so riled up, and think, “perhaps I am the one making a mistake here”

I agree with Jnitt on this one

PSUinBOSSton isn’t saying anything different than most of us here have already- PSU plays a pretty basic defensive scheme with our DB’s. I, for one, would like to some different schemes. I’ve heard about this defensive tactic called man-to-man and would like for PSU to give it a try.

I think....

you might be misreading his intent (or I am just giving him the benefit of the doubt). The post isn’t really “dogging” on Scirotto, its focused more on the simplistic cover defenses run by PSU. This is a complaint I think the majority of us have expressed in about the PSU secondary in the past couple of years.

Well

the intent of the peice was to talk about how Anthony Scirroto got drafted to play baseball. The part about the simplistic defense was one sentance to paragraphs from the bottom.

Next to scheduling, and playing Pitt, our simplistic zone coverages is another topic I wish would just go away.

Understand why they do what they do. Accept that they will continue to do it. Like it or don’t. That’s it and that’s all.

O'RLY?

Don’t you think they’re going to work a little harder to disguise their coverages and introduce new wrinkles into the system? You can’t seriously be suggesting that after USC chewed us up and spat us out that we’re going continue running the same exact schemes. Joe said himself they got out-coached. That game was an epic embarassment of our program, and Joe. We haven’t lost a bowl game by that much since 1997. We hadn’t lost our bowl game as a top ten ranked team since 1985.

“that’s it and that’s all”? To suggest that is to say that Joe is content beating up mediocre teams and then getting blown out by a team with a good passing attack. We’re not abandoning the Cover 3 but certainly the coaches are going to take a good hard look at how they execute the system.

I think

the biggest thing is that it was working to an extent. At least with royster chewing up yards on first down. Both he and Landolt go down in the same quarter, and USC get’s to attack a tired defense. The DE lack of depth showed. At that point we needed an adjustment. We didn’t make it until too late.

I agree it chews up Joe, and he knows just as well as we all do that there is not great depth at DE. So I do think you’ll see plenty of new wrinkles to disguise coverages, but you can’t throw a green secondary right into a Cover 1 man defense.

Schemes

you scheme to fit the personal. just like on offense you do this on defense… last year we didn’t have the DB’s to play man in the secondary. they were all solid DB’s but not the type that are going be phyosical at the line and then be able to run with at wideout… thus we play zone… the last time i can remember anyone playing man was JKing and i believe he was just going man-on-man with the opposing teams best reciever… with the crop of DB’s coming in, i can see us playing some more man in the secondary over the next few years…

by WETSU on Jul 21, 2009 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, really.

You and I are people watching college football on television. Penn State runs zone coverages pretty much exclusively. If you don’t like it, that’s fine, but it isn’t going to change. You are just complaining about it. If there is one thing I know for certain, it’s that Joe Paterno doesn’t give one flying shit what you and I think.

My point is that it’s exhausting listening to person after person talk about how Penn State should switch up it’s coverages more, presenting it like man to man and press coverages are something that are coaches are somehow unaware of. They are aware of them, and they repeatedly decide not to use them. My request is that you should try and understand why, then deal with it, accepting it as part of the coaching philosophy of a guy most people around here believe walks on water.

If you think the USC game is going to bring about some sort of epic change in our defensive philosophy….I think you’ll wind up disappointed. I mean Notre Dame absolutley ate our defense alive in 2006, did the defensive philosophy change? No, and that game was five times more embarrassing than the USC game was.

Two semi-related points

1. It’s not unreasonable to want our defensive coaching staff to mix things up in terms of coverages, because any sophisticated passing offense can pick it apart.

2. It’s completely unreasonable to expect anything to actually change.

I know that’s basically re-stating what you wrote, but…yeah.

In all fairness

It is teams with sophisticated passing offenses and senior quarterbacks that play well. Purdue’s passing offense is prety sophisticated, but we beat them pretty regularly, and our defensive philosophy is a huge reason why. It compels college kids to execute, and unless that college kid winds up being a first round draft pick with about 12 months, it generally works.

Further, you think OMG Tim Tebow rips us up passing the ball like that. I don’t. The fact is, what it takes to rip up out inferior defensive strategy is so rare it’s like moving because there were three cases of West Nile Virus in the same county as you.

That horizontal passing crap never works against us.

Really, because it never tests the corners and safeties the way a well-executed, traditional passing offense would. We can defend that bubble screen garbage all day.

This sounds stupid and obvious, but if you can keep your QB upright for more than four seconds against PSU, you have a great chance of moving the ball in large chunks. Otherwise, it’s a basic, very good defense. The numbers prove that.

USC tried horizontal crap first

if you’ll recall. They found our defense to be a ton faster than advertised and superb tacklers. We’d have beat Florida last year.

Also

If you can keep your quarterback upright for four seconds, and have a decent quarterback, you can move the ball effectively against any defense.

It helps.

But if the QB absolutely knows where everyone is going to be in the defensive backfield, it’s a hell of a lot easier to make that throw.

Well I wouldn’t expect epic change, and we’re never going to see jamming/press coverage under Bradley. He’s press-phobic for some reason, but more importantly he only recruits kids for the current system, small and fast CB’s. So long as we have a roster full of 5’8" 170 CB’s, we’re not pressing anyone.

The thing I expect to see is better safety play. We’ve already gone out and picked up a bigger, more physical safety in Hodges. By leaning in that direction we hopefully will be more competative against sophisticated passing attacks where the whole play is designed to exploit your safeties, by trying to catch them out of position or mis-matched against a more physical receiver.

I hope Bradley is again in the hotseat over his defensive strategies. In the past 3 seasons we’ve seen some pretty uncharacteristic failures on defense, blowing a huge lead against MSU in 2007, letting USC, Ohio State, and Notre Dame pass at will. All the while we’re top 10 in every defensive category, which means we’re usually very consistent. I’m not sure what the answer is, but he’s the one who has to take responsibility for it.

Tongue in Cheek?

I have defended the cover 3, I don’t think there is anything wrong with, and I think it’s won us plenty of games.

I also like Scirrotto. The article interested me because he is such an amazing athlete with a great potential for pro baseball, and yet he chose to play for Joe Paterno. It’s an article about a true student athlete.

I thought my comments were clearly tongue in cheek (beginning with the SEC comment), but maybe it didn’t come off that way. We talked about the DB schemes in depth recently, and so I thought his comments were apropos of that. With the defending I did of the scheme, his comment seemed to blow me up a little by calling it “basic.”

So sorry it offended your delicate sensibilities.

Sucks how we went 2-11 last year with our shitty defense.

Oh. Right. We didn’t.

Even with basic d, most teams we play can’t beat us. We either shoot ourselves in the foot with shitty, shitty offense (see: 07, 08), or teams with truly NFL caliber players pass over our white DBs (see: SC Rose Bowl). Not too many losses can be laid at the feet of the D, however. Even in that craptacular debacle that was 2004, the D only gave up 168 points all freaking year.

There were many people who believed that Morelli was at fault for the loss, what with the last drive and all.

Come on

How did you pass on this gem

He’s right You’re wrong. Hoyer is the one who threw two picks, and the offense turned all three MSU turnovers into points. Penn State’s Defense didn’t even slow down Michigan State’s offense down in the fourth quarter.
It was a TEAM loss. Anthony Morelli didn’t make a couple of plays at the end, that’s undisputed, but the coaches play calls were dog-shit. But for what it’s worth, he was there at the end doing his best. The Defense had no depth, and was sodomized by Spartans the whole second half because three guys were disrespected while “party walking”. Whatever the fuck that is.

Or this one

Five Star Boy goes 16-35 45.7% completion percentage for 1TD against the 77th ranked pass defense in the country and we are going to blame the defense. Please.

Please what?
Please…cover somebody?
Please… tackle the third sting linebacker running back the pooch kick?
Please…put some pressure on the quarterback?

If I told you this morning that Penn State would have no turnovers, run for 200 yards and score 31 points, would you have guessed [a] Penn State won or [b] Penn State lost?

If we want......

to talk about national perception of Penn State………Scirotto’s comments on the simplicity of the D contribute to the “slow, out of date, old, not getting you to the pro’s, etc, etc, not sexy” national perception of Penn State in general. It goes hand in hand with Deion Sanders talking about how under coached Lydell Sargeant was at Penn State. It also goes hand in hand with the comments by the Cardinals scout about Morelli being severely undercoached. I don’t see these things being written or said about NFL prospects from UF, USC, UT, UGA, Mich., OSU, etc etc.

Having said that, I’m not down on our Coaches at all. They have their philosophy and works way more often than it doesn’t. I was just pointing out that if we wonder why there is all this national “disrespect” for PSU on the field and in conversation with other “powerhouses”, that information like this doesn’t help change that perception.
