At this point...

…I like Jay so I wish he (in interviews) would stop referring to JoePa as “Joe” and start referring to him as “Dad”.

Just for the reaction from the Pennlive types, et al.

Jay

is really starting to grow on me. At first I could take or leave him, but I believe he is developing and maturing into a great assitant coach. He is also a great recruiter. I think one day years from now he will coach PSU.

Incredible how things end up.

We were ready to have Jay’s head after QB14, and it turned out QB14 was uncoachable by PRO coaches. There was a post from about this time last year that got Jay a lot of flak because he was “blogging” on an Obama website (which btw gave everyone their own space to blog, so it was nothing special), when he should have been coaching the QBs. People were calling for his head on a platter, or his resignation. Turned out, we were more than fine at QB. Like first team all-big ten fine.

Also I think its great

that Clark is being like a “big brother” for Kevin Newsome, showing him the ropes, mentoring him. Similiar to what M-Rob was for Clark

by GoingDeep on Jul 24, 2009 9:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think that goes hand-in-hand with the “family” aspect of our program which pays dividends. Coxson is also being mentored by a former PSU receiver who attended the same highschool, meanwhile there are several players who’ve graduated and continued to make an impact on the players’ lives like Bowman/Arrington etc.

it’s great to think that Clark will continue mentoring Newsome even after graduation and maybe also Bolden/Jones as well.

That's one of the infinite amount of reasons why I love PSU so much

I wonder how many starters/former players from other top schools mentor their incoming freshman players like our players do. It’s what makes that place so damn special. The love for bring glory to dear old state transcends indivudualism, and instead instills that sense of family, fraternity, and belonging in everyone that goes to and is touched by that place.

Chad Henne

Wasn’t one of Henne’s biggest gripes about picking Michigan over Penn State that he went the same HS as Kerry Collins but never felt as if Collins reached out to him? I have a vague recollection about something like that.

The story was always that Henne didn't like Jay or his coaching style

but after the successes of Robinson and Clark, I don’t know if I really believe that rumor anymore.

Thought this was funny...
Obviously, Derek Moye is a guy because of his height and speed who’s exciting.

When I first read it, I thought Jay was saying Moye’s height and speed was what made him a guy.

Any recommendations for the LSAT?

I’m taking it at UP the morning of the Iowa game. I’m hoping it’ll be a win win day for me.

by RNF18 on Jul 24, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I took the LSAT the morning of the home game against Minnesota in Willard during the ’05 season. A couple thoughts:

Obviously, it is not easy to take the LSAT on a Football Saturday. Focusing on the exam is going to be hard, do what you have to do ahead of time to make peace with that fact. A particular thing that was distracting to me is the fact that about a hundred million kids at PSU take the LSAT, and a lot of them probably aren’t really taking law school too seriously. You have to just focus on your own efforts and not compare yourself in any regards to what people around you are doing/saying/etc.

The biggest recommendation I can give is to make sure you have somewhere quiet to sleep the night before the exam. Getting a hotel room in SC is probably out of the question, but if you have a friend who’s apartment is definitely going to be quieter than yours, maybe you should look into crashing there. The night before my test my neighbors at 120 E Fairmount had a party til 4 in the morning, played “Gold Digger” on repeat (legitimately I stopped counting at 20) and the bass was thumping through the concrete wall. Hey, I like to party, so I never thought before how loud our apartment was at night. But then you realize it too late.

Sucks that you have probably the most outgoing/crazy environment in the nation to try and seclude yourself and focus. But just plan on it being tough ahead of time and do what you gotta do.

I had a handle of Jack Daniels waiting for me when I got out, it was a beautiful sunny day, and the team won. And I ended up doing very well on the LSAT. So win win is definitely possible.

Oh and...

Avoid law school at all costs. I told you so.

by rbz14 on Jul 24, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I concur on all points...

Also, running through a bunch of past LSATs in the weeks before the exam (there are books full of these available) easily added 10+ points to my score. I don’t know if it’ll work for you, but it worked for me.

by WorldBFat on Jul 24, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know little of the LSAT other

than it is a standardized test. Every standardized test I’ve ever taken has contained more information than most people ever could hope to know.

So the next best thing to knowin everything is to have a good test taking strategy. Know what to spend your time on, what to skip, etc. Personally, the single most helpful prep tool for me was practice exams. Take them, re-take them and take them again. A lot of the crap you forgot about from studying will be remembered simply by taking the practice exams repeatedly. And time yourself every time.

by rahpsu92 on Jul 24, 2009 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The LSAT is nothing but logic games and reading comprehension.

So strategy is everything, yes. Taking the practice exams boosted my score because I knew how the questions would be worded and how to pace myself. You should see your practice scores go up once you take a few just because you are able to pace yourself into answering as many questions as possible.

by WorldBFat on Jul 24, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I never plan to take the LSATs

But I think I improved my scores on every other major test I have had to take by looking at past exams. Unless there was major formatting changes of course.

Usually, if you have a decent enough grasp on the knowledge, getting to know the patterns of a standardized test is clutch.

Too country quote from Jay

“a friend of mine raises hunting dogs and he’d tell you, ‘Until you can get them out there in the field and shoot the gun, you don’t know how they’re going to react.’ Sometimes, you take the dog out and you shoot the gun and the dog comes back and hides behind you. Sometimes you shoot the gun and the dog goes off and chases the rabbit. We’ll find out.”

I think I’m really starting to like this guy.

Is it just me or is Jay displaying his father's gift for hilarious witty comments?
Well, now that Daryll weighs 372 pounds, I don’t know if we’ll be able to do anything with him running.

Then:

I said to Joe, ‘Hey, he had his hip done in October and competed for the British Open. You got yours in November. Time for you to step up. Guys are making you look bad. Lance Armstrong’s back on the bike and he’s 37. Some guy out in Oregon, an 81-year-old guy, he did a NASCAR race.’ I said, ’You’re slacking. You’re just coaching.’ And he kind of laughed and said, ‘You know, you’re right. I’ll have to pick it up.’

Also, loved the quote about Joe not caring about how well we finished ranking wise in terms of statistics:

Joe came in after last season in a staff meeting and guys are talking about, ‘Well, we ranked here defensively, we ranked here in this, we ranked here in that.’ And Joe said, ‘Hey, look guys, we lost two games and that’s all I’m worried about. I’ve never been a coach who’s been content going 11-1.’ He said, ‘I want to win them all. I want to win the national championship. That’s the one that we should talk about.

Cool interview.
