That is apparently pre-season Offensive Player Of The Year, not first team arm-punter. Big Ten Media Days kickoff at 10 a.m., coverage on the BTN website.

(Late edit: Yes, after Pryor was announced as the pre-season offensive POY in Chicago, James Laurinaitis was retroactively awarded 32 solo tackles by the statisticians in Columbus, bringing his total to 4,835 for the 2008 season.)

I know

I wear my blue and white glasses all the time, but how Clark, Royster, Bowman, or Odrick don’t occupy either of those awards is beyond me.

The defense is always hard

and so I’ll give a pass there even though there is no way Jones beats out Lee or Bowman for LB awards, but the Pryor thing is beyond words.

Jones is really good.

And Lee/Bowman have their own issues (but they’ll be first-team after the season), but yeah. The Pryor thing is kind of insulting and yet not even remotely surprising.

I agree

you could argue Jones deserves it and I’m fine with that, I just wouldn’t have voted for him because I’m a total homer. But yeah, there is no logical explanation whatsoever for putting Pryor ahead of the guy you just voted 1st team QB based on actual performance like 7 months earlier.

This is F-ing unreal!

But, you know, it harkens back to the 2005 Big 10 Media Days and the way PSU was disrespected and laughed at. Posluszny and MRbo talked about how that stung and how that was a motivator. Look at the results from that season. Perhaps this generates the same motivation. Now, I’m going to go read “Project 17” and “The Sidelined Captain” again to make me feel better. GODAMN!!!! Prior for offensive POY?!?!?! Seriously?!!

by Spats on Jul 27, 2009 10:23 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Um....

We were picked to finish second. I don’t think we’re being laughed at.

by speedomike on Jul 27, 2009 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess I was referring to how we were picked near the bottom in ‘05 and how that team was received when, during Big 10 Media Day, people laughed when Paterno talked about competing for the Big 10 title. That team used it as a motivational tool. Obviously, this isn’t quite the same slap in the face, but it’s got to piss off a guy like Clark, who, despite all the skepticism last season, ended up as 1st team All-Big 10 QB. If he’s looking for some more haters or bulletin board material, he just got it.

by Spats on Jul 27, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think it "pisses off a guy like Clark"

I bet he just smiled and is going to use it as fuel to improve himself as best he can to make sure that he has the last laugh.

Is it MVP or POTY?

Because I guess Pryor as offensive MVP could make a little more sense. Clark and Royster may be better, but being on the same team kind of takes a little of the “valuable” away from each other. Same with Juice and Benn. Pryor doesn’t really have anyone else. Well, besides his corvette.

by speedomike on Jul 27, 2009 10:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Fixed that, thanks.

And you’re right, MVP would make more sense.

Does it really matter?

No matter what the name of the ‘honor’ might be, it still carries the caveat of being preseason. Let whoever wants to hand out meaningless titles do so… it can only help us when Pryor starts to really believe his own hype.

I'm giving my pre-season MAP (Most Awesome Player) award to....*drumroll*

Nate Stupar. He is going to cause 20 fumbles on kickoffs and punts, and make critical blocks to allow for 10 kick/punt returns this year. He will then be rotated into the LB often enough and wow enough people as he sets an NCAA sack record, despite only playing half as many snaps as any starting linebacker in the country.

We will all be sad when he leaves early for the draft, but it will be that happy kind of sad.

I’m watching so……

I’m hoping for some good soundbites from Bielema, he’s one of a kind. Kiss of death

As an OSU fan, I don’t agree with the pick of OSU as the front-runner or Pryor as preseason offensive MVP. Personally, I’d rather be the hunter, rather than the hunted. If we’ve learned anything from the Big Ten media, it’s that these awards are often the kiss of death. Penn State is in the driver’s seat, as far as I’m concerned; plus the Buckeyes have a lot more to prove than the Nittany Lions.

Besides

We should have played Clark in 2007, Jay was right about that. But we had a guy I thought would lose confidence if we played Clark, and I thought that other guy had a just to be a good quarterback, boy, was I wrong about that one.

by PSUinBOSSton on Jul 28, 2009 8:33 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

From my standpoint, I really would feel bad if he had serious confidence or emoutional issues

and would be beyond devastated by being benched, as I don’t put a lot of confidence in myself. But at this point I’ve gotten to the point where I accept, even if I don’t like it, that there are better people than myself, and that I’m never going to be a superstar in life at anything. I’m doomed to mediocrity. But at some point, the coaches need to realize that it’s going to hurt him more by having him playing and getting booed after every horrible pass, sack, fumble, three and out, etc. So it was always the coaches mistake in this issue not to take him out, when even they knew they had someone better ready to take the helm.

But it’s also history now, although I wish we could have had another year with Clark playing (who knows, maybe 2007 would have been much better than it was, but hindsight is 20/20 and there’s not changing what happened now.
