Most popular, If not Historic Penn State number

Not sure if i can start this or not, maybe i need some help, but the other day i saw people were talking about the most popular number in the NFL or wherever, but it led me to think, in Penn State history, whats the most popular/historic number?    32?  31?  22? 25? 7? 1? 2?   there's been a lot of players with each number!  what number has the most?   maybe someone can help me out, or maybe its a lost cause, anyways, i just had a bunch of captain and cokes to celebrate our #1 party school ranking!!!  WE ARE!!!!

To clarify

Do you mean the most frequently used/most common? Or do you mean the “most historic”.

If the first, then I’m sure they all average out over time. I mean, there’s 85 scholarship players + walkons, so most numbers are taken every year.

Aye

If it’s historic, or most panache, it’s far and away #31. Aint no other number comes close to standing toe to toe with these three:

Shane Conlan
Andre Collins
Paul Posluszny

Just go ahead and bring me some other names and see if you don’t get one of these:

Most historic

Like, how many famous people have worn #2 and how many wore 31 and so on. i’m watching the 1998, 300 and counting DVD and chaffie fields was #2 and so was D will, and there was a #5 linebacker and a #31. Travis Forney was #14 though… haha but so was John Schaffer :)

32? 14?

The easy choices would be #32: Blair Thomas, Matt Suhey, Ki-Jana Carter, Bryan Scott

and #14: Todd Blackledge, Chuck Fusina, John Shaffer, Wally Richardson

Morelli wasn’t the only quarterback to wear that number. Sheesh.

31 may not have been the most popular frequecy wise, but

It just feels right to me. I grew up watching the 87 Fiesta Bowl tape over and over, Shane Conlan firmly entrenched in my mind, then went to school with Puz. So at least for me, 31 would certainly qualify.

31, 32

I gotta go with 31 and 32. Way too many infuencial players have worn those numbers on Offense and Defense. Look at the history of them.

Have to

go with 3 for my whiteout jersey. I’ve made some serious noise wearing that bad boy, probably responsible for as many wins as any player or coach.

Numbers

I always liked it how the year after who is really good in a number gratuates they seem to almost go out of their way to give it to some scrub the next season. Almost like they are directly trying to keep any one number from becoming to recognizable.

Also helps with the merchandising...

if your 3 or 31 or 55 is now worn by a walk-on. Replace it with the hot number du jour and hide your trusty lucky number in the back of the closet until it is properly represented.

Interesting fact

Did you know they didn’t use single digit numbers until the 1980s?

Doesnt always happen.

I remember when I got my Zack Mills #7. He graduated and Justin King took it. Then after he took Zamaitis’ #1 Scirrotto took it. Im not even going to mention Devlin since he left but you get my drift.

Not that he's done anything yet

but Newsome is also rocking the 12 right now.

Seriously

right now, at best, he’s the back-up quarterback. Until he does somehing on the field, he’s just some scrub freshman. I was actually really suprised that they let him take #12.

It'll be pretty hard coming up with a #1 number

since some have a few VERY exceptional users, while some have a long line of really good users, etc. Could probably come up with a top 5 or so, though.

for me I’d say 31, 32, 14, 12, then maybe 24 (but there are so many other good candidates)

I was going with #5 as well

but for 2,000+ completely different reasons (including 327 in one game!) that came my freshman year.

QB14 isn’t listed under the 14 jersey either.

Looks like they haven't "updated" it for a couple of years!

Also, I did what most of the other goofballs on BSD did, I went through every number! UGH! Otherwise, it’s an awsome site!

Interesting, if you want to make your own mark at Penn State, wear number 92. Nobody of any importance has worn this (at least up till the last update).

Second interesting thing (and I have been chastized by King Rambler several times for bringing up politics on this site!), Hugh Rodham, Hillary Clinton’s bro wore number 69! I didn’t know he was a PSU alum, let alone a football player!

Wiki listed him as a backup QB even though he wore #69. I know back in those days, numbers meant different things (I mean football things) than they do now. During the 50’s and 60’s, almost all of our QB’s wore numbers in the 20’s.
