July Recruiting Thread Is BACK!

The last one died a cruel fate before it's time, may this one live on forever!

Star-divide

This is a lot of 4-stars:

COMMITTED/UNSIGNED Pos Stars Ht Wt 40 RR Video Enrolled Hometown

Ricketts was given 4-stars after not being rated, Dieffenbach also gets a bump.  Graham is still mysteriously un-rated.  It's not like these ratings mean a damn thing anyway.

How many schollies left?

Assuming Norwood grayshirts, what number are we looking at? And simply because I’m lazy and don’t want to pull up Mike or dawson’s posts about the subject, what positions are we still looking for?

by Jeff Junstrom on Jul 3, 2009 10:21 AM EDT reply actions

The number I keep seeing is 18

And we already have 10-11 depending on whether Norwood will count for next year’s class. I think it’s fair to count Fortt, Kenney, Royer, and Bolden as being part of that remaining 7-8 scholarships. Apparently, we’ve backed off WR Stills from California. Haplea

There’s a kid named Williams from somewhere in VA, he’s a safety. I think we’re on him now, not sure if/when he visits. Bill Kurelic from Nittany Network thinks we have a good shot with TE Haplea.

RB Lattimore and DT Floyd are still out there, and we’d make room for them regardless of the numbers. They’re not making decisions anytime soon. DE Olanlyan and DE Easley are huge needs, though I think we’re out of it for Easley.

Floyd

There’s an ESPN recruiting article here (at the bottom) that says that it’s either us or UNC for Floyd right now. Unfortunately it also says he’s going to that Friday Night Lights camp, so Florida could attempt to sway him. I’ve also heard it’s down to us and UNC for Fortt as well. I know UNC has been getting some great commits and classes the past few years, but I like our chances with both of them. (even though Fortt is probably with us) So I would think PSU has a really great chance to land Floyd right now, at least in comparison to the chances that we get a commitment from Lattimore, which honestly would be a complete shocker for me.

My posts wouldn't help

because I didn’t know the answer either. However, I think RUTS got it right. Scout has an eligibility tracker here, which says with seniors alone (assuming we don’t lose someone early to the draft…Bowman you’re on notice), we’ll free up 18 schollies after this year. Not sure if it’s 100% accurate, but it’s the only real source I can find.

My Favorite Part

I know we are filling the off season, but my favorite part of recruiting is hearing who Joe is excited about at the after signing day press conference.

I remember a few years ago he was asked who excited him in the class. Well, he talked about a no-hype barely 2 star recruit with PSU connections. A basketball player (when does he not mention this?) who was a great athlete and would be a “darn good football player” (guessing that was an actual quote).

Well, a few years later and sure enough Drew Astorino has turned into a nice safety who has plenty of experience because he worked his way onto the field amidst a veteran secondary. Say what you will about our secondary not being great, but I think Astorino can play and I’m excited to see him grow as a player.

Now comes my question, who do BSDers think would be Joe’s favorite recruit in this class would be (committed or high on PSU)?

Feel free to just pick the best basketball player . . .

by PSUinBOSSton on Jul 3, 2009 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

I've got a question

Bear with me, this might take a second to relate to PSU.

I’m a college swimmer, and swim teams have a lot fewer scholarships to hand out than football teams. In fact most teams don’t have enough (full) scholarships to fill their rosters. What they do is split up scholarships, giving (for example) 16 kids half rides instead of 8 kids full rides. The kids then, if they’re good students, can pick up academic scholarships and still go to school at very little (if any) cost to themselves.

The reason that I ask is that Hailes recently mentioned in an interview (here) that his grades and SATs are really good. So does PSU need to give him a full ride, or could he share one with, say Kenny, and pick up some academic money too? Kenny’s dad is a PSU professor and colleges usually offer discounts, if not completely free tuition to professor’s kids (it’s a benefit like dental insurance) so Kenny might not need the full scholarship either. All this would mean that we can potentially pick up even a few more recruits, provided some of them are smart, which it seems like they are.

Or maybe I’m way off base…

by hobroblin187 on Jul 3, 2009 12:21 PM EDT reply actions

It's my understanding

That even a half scholarship would count against the scholarship limit of 85. So giving them each a half scholarship would not prevent them from counting as 2 scholarships against the limit.

I think . . .

by PSUinBOSSton on Jul 3, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

DIA vs DIAA

All scholarships in DI-A are considered full, while you can split them up in DI-AA and DII (beacuase of the fewer allowed).

You make a good point with the tuition of players who’s parents work at the school. I don’t know the answer, but I’d be willing to bet that once the kid plays it counts towards the total limit regardless of if he gets money or not. Otherwise, it creates a huge loophole that schools could hire parents of prospective student-athletes a year or two in advance to avoid having to burn a scholarship.

Here is how USC apparently does it...

Not sure if this is across the board or just for basketball or what, i swear I saw a piece where they discussed a USC football player as well, but i imagine NCAA D1 scholarships are similar for most sports.

Very cool to look at

Especially since those are rivals rankings. If we landed all of the pretty much sure commits plus three or four of the good shot commits we’d have 10-12 four star players, on rivals no less! Pretty incredible given as how they usually don’t give much credit to our recruits.

by dawsonPSU10 on Jul 3, 2009 12:44 PM EDT reply actions

10-12 Four Star

for now. Once they commit, I believe it is Rivals company policy (I think it’s in the Mission Statement) to reduce each PSU commit’s star ranking by 2. You can’t argue with company policy.

Wow, I can't believe I hadn't watched anything from him before

The second play they show (although there are similar ones later) he must be carrying 5 guys with him, and he still manages to break through and run thirty yards for the TD. The video ESPN has from our camp right below that one is pretty impressive as well.

Not rescind

just stop talking to him mostly. I think he really wants to play RB in college so that might keep PSU from being high on his list.

Really?

I am by no means am an expert or have any knowledge about scholarships, or subscribe to recruiting sites, etc. but looking at Scout’s eligibility page they show a total of 18 freed up schollies after this season with seniors alone (and hopefully we wont be losing a certain superstar junior LB to the NFL until after the 2010 season).

Now, like I said I have no idea if that is accurate or not, or what our actual schollie opening # is, but assuming 18 is accurate, and Levi Norwood gray shirts, we currently have 7 spots left. Just looking above at millzner’s chart above:

For the recruits I’ve read the most about and their interest in PSU:
3 almost certain commits: Kenney, Fortt, and Royer. Total spots left: 4
1 we will most likely get: Floyd (down to UNC and PSU from what I’ve read). Total left: 3 left

From millzner’s link from below to the free Scout forecast for commits :
Their editors believe the following (%ages based on the four editors preditcions, not statistics):

Dominique Easley (DE): 25% said PSU, 75% UF
Kevin Haplea (TE): 100% said PSU, so just hypothetical: Total left: 2
Robbie Havenstein (OL/DL): 75% said Maryland, 25% UVA
Khamrone Kolb (OT): 50% UNC, 50% PSU
C.J. Olaniyan (DE/TE): 25% PSU, 75% MSU
Kenny Stills (WR): 25% PSU, 50% UF, 25% USC
Marcus Lattimore (RB): 0% PSU
and finally Zach Zwinak: 25% PSU, 75% VT

Again, totally just thrown together using current resources and info I’ve read on things, but according to this we’d have 2 schollies left for this class, and even though they have Zwinak going to VT, according to this unofficial, sloppily made, and half-assed analysis, we would still have room to take Zwinak. Although psuphiman80 pointed out something I did not know in that Zwinak wants to play RB in college, so our depth might scare him away anyway.

And just as a warning, I probably have the official scholarships remaining # wrong and I’ve probably left someone out of this comment I’ve thrown together in 20 minutes, so please feel free to add on/correct anything stupid I’ve omitted or said.

Just thinking about this right now

1) It’s a long way til Feb and for as long as I’ve been following recruiting the Fearless Forecast has always been late or nonexistent. These predictions are from June despite the fact that they came out in July and recruiting is fluid.

2) It would seem that the staff doesn’t hold Zwinak in the same regard as Floyd and Lattimore. Those are two guys who will have scholarships open almost regardless of the situation. If some of the CA kids prove that they have genuine interest in PSU or if the staff wants to get another pure DE, Zwinak could be the odd man out.

other fun stuff

So apparently I have some insight into the recruiting world now, based on someone I know. I’ve been debating whether or not to even post any of this b/c it’s all kind of cliche, but to someone like me it’s really interesting to know someone who experiences these things first-hand. Here’s some highlights:

Bradley is instantly likeable as a coach and recruiter, he has a straight-froward, sometimes blunt but honest style about his recruiting and that translates extremely well to kids.

The coaches at Pitt come off like sleazy used-car-salesmen.

Weis comes off as extremely arogant, he literally drives his fat ass around in a scooter acting like the king of England, and follows a few rated recruits around while he and his staff ignore everyone else.

Especially Fat Charlie driving his fat ass around in a scooter to try to win over recruits (it may sound cruel, but I do not give him any excuses for this, even if his knee was blown out. At least crutch your way over instead of acting like a complete lard-ass. How he recruits players is beyond me, can they really not see what a lazy ass he is and a horrible coach?). Was that at camps he stalks high ranked recruits on his fat-buggy? Or is that his primary source of transportation to visit recruits?

Scout Guesses

Some guys over at scout taking guesses on where kids will commit, formatted in a nice chart.

Synopsis?

All 4 guru’s agree that Bolden, Floyd, Fortt, Haplea, Kenney, and Royer will commit to PSU. That’s not bad right there, I’ll take it.

Based on this it doesn’t look like we’ll end up with Easley, Zwinak, Olaniyan, Stills, or Lattimore… But these are just guesses.

Nice, I like the sound of that

I’m highest on Sharrif Floyd for some reason. He just seems like a vintage LJ kinda dude.

I agree, he should be the one we go after the hardest at this point. He could litterally start next year if he lives up to the hype and with LJ’s coaching the sky’s the limit with this kid.

I was disappointed about Zwinak, he’s a VT legacy but Joe loves his fullbacks and he would be an excellent fit in this offense. He hasn’t decided yet, so keep your fingers crossed.

I may be way off

But don’t a Fullback and the Spread HD mix like cocaine and rollercoasters? I know this is the Big “Mouth Breathing, Coal Mining, Too Country” 10 11, but a fullback just seems like out of context for the Spread HD. Correct me.

by Jeff Junstrom on Jul 8, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Joe Loves Fullbacks

It doesn’t matter what our offense is called, as long as Joe is coach we’re going to have a FB and he’s going to play a roll out there blocking. Joe loves the power I formation on the goal-line, in fact we still call the same goal-line plays as we did in the 70’s.

But to answer your quesiton, the FB is pretty prominant blocking in the Spread HD . Many of Royster’s big runs this year were directly the result of a fantastic block by Lawler and he also did a good job of pass proteciton. Also he had a nice TD against MSU this year, which I was elated over since it was his final homegame.

So yeah, FB’s rock, and if you can get a good one like this kid Zwinak you can do more with the position like dump-off passes (which you see a lot of in NFL/West Coast offenses). Maybe it’s just me, but I think a good FB can be very important part of our offense.

"We hugged as grown men do. It was a great moment. Then, it was business as usual." -- LJ Sr.

by millzners on Jul 8, 2009 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I was almost going to say this

but was to timid to throw that out given how I don’t have much FB experience or knowledge in terms of plays and players. I was trying to figure out if other schools really feature the FB like we do. I love it when Joe gives one to the FB to pound it in for a score, which is why I was kinda convinced that Zwinak would go with us, because I didn’t t think many other schools really use all aspects of their FBs.

by dawsonPSU10 on Jul 8, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

don't worry

I don’t know too much about football either, but one thing I happen to know is Joe’s life-long love-affair with the FB position.

I agree, I’m not sure other schools feature the FB the way we do, in fact I know the other school (VT) most are thinking Zwinak will end up hardly uses them as a ball carrier: Of their 3 FB’s, there is only 1 attempt for 2 yards last year and no TD’s. In 2007 they used them a bit more running and receiving, but still.

He claims its going to be a “nice, relazing visit to hang out and see some of his recruit buddies…” Not saying he’s going to commit… but I dunno what high school recruit makes the trip to PSU just to “hang out”… Would be a great get if we can get him to commit this weekend.

Damn

Haven’t had a blue chipper commit in like, 57 hours or something. What’s wrong with us?

Maybe

He’s pretty much the worst kept secret of the class.

Alex Kenney will be visiting Penn State on Tuesday and would not rule out a commitment to the Nittany Lions.

Um...

Don’t get me wrong…. (Don’t you hate it when someone starts like that? It’s almost like hearing “It’s not you, it’s me…” right before she dumps you.) I’m stoked about this recruiting class but…

What about the defense? Especially our “perceived” weak spot, the secondary?

by yopawdre on Jul 15, 2009 5:47 PM EDT reply actions

We got about 100 DBs last year...

Was A.) probably a tough sell to DB recruits this year after we signed, like 6 last year?, and B.) Having signed so many last year and being a little more limited in the number of Scholarships we could give out this year, there really wasn’t as much of a need for Secondary players this year as some other positions.

DAMMIT

I was off by one second

Just looked it up

6 CBs: Givens, Thomas, Morris, Drake, and Wallace.
3 Safeties: Willis, SOA, and Hodges (Scout has him at WLB, but he’s probably going to play safety for us)

Six?
6 CBs: Givens, Thomas, Morris, Drake, and Wallace.

I don’t think I’m drunk yet, but by my count that’s only five…

The secondary was covered quite well and extensively last class

We took in a ton of DBs/Safetys and WRs (some of whom could probably make the switch to DB) which were our major cause for concern for this season. This year was mainly about QBs, OL and the DL, which we have done magnificently with IMHO. The problem at the moment is not enough DEs since we need to build some depth, but we’ll likely land Royer and we have Baublitz-kreig, so we might be OK.

Ah...

I feel better now. Thanks! (See? It wasn’t you, it WAS me!)

actually

I’ve been disappointed in our defensive haul this year, I was realistically expecting 2 big-time DE recruits. I mean we’ve got a defensive line coach in LJ who could be a headcoach at some other schools and a DC anywhere in the country, he’s a fantastic developer of talent, and we just recently lost 3 DE’s including one to the 11th pick overall. 4 years ago we put Hali in the NFL and he’s doing fantastic. We’re THIN at DE because of all this development of talent. So where the hell are the DE’s? They should be beating down our door as we speak. I’m not even worried about this season, I’m worried about 2010, 2011, etc.

If we’re lucky Olaniyan will realize he’s walking into a golden opportunity the way Newsome was earlier this year.

makes me wonder if we’re looking at the begining of a 3-4 defense installation. Isn’t the first thing to stock up on huge DT’s and a solid mix of LB’s? We’re certainly looking good at DT’s. I just don’t understand how you whiff on DE’s given that’s the one position we’ve been absolutely great at developing and sending to the next level. If you had told me this time 6 months ago we’d have 2 top tier QB’s, and no DE’s I’d have laughed hysterically.

Not gonna happen.

You’ll see more LB’s moved into the Tim Shaw stand-up DE role before you see a switch to a 3-4. Every year, people bring up the 3-4. It ain’t gonna happen.

They’ll try to steal a DE recruit this year, but if not, they’ll load up on ’em next year.

I wonder if they didn’t make it a priority until Maybin registered for the draft and that put them behind the 8-ball so to speak in scouting and handing out offers early. It could also simply be that there just aren’t a ton of stellar DE’s in our recruiting region this year…

Would ending up with...

Baublitz and Royer at DE in this class be considered a disappointment? Both hold lots of offers from BCS Schools. Plus they are both PA top 10 guys which some people view as hyper important.

well in all honesty, yes, that would be a disappointment to me (not saying I’m some recruiting guru). specifically I have not heard flattering things about Royer, and this is from a source who’s played against him and attended the same camps. I hate being negative about any of our recruits (even if they haven’t committed yet), so I’ll just leave it at that. I just think we need a legit DE top tier recruit, not a kid who might project to that position given a bunch of if’s.

no clue about royer myself

and I don’t know your source, but it seems that typically people who compete against “stars” tend to say, “eh, they weren’t that good” so I don’t know how much I’d trust that info.

I feel you on that, a lot of times it’s hard to recognize jealousy vs. legit criticisms. On the other hand they were really impressed by how talented the rest of our recruits were. Especially Bolden, Coxson, and Kenney.

Your source played against ALL of them?

Does he play on some sort of Harlem Globetrotters All-star High School Football Team that just travels around playing HS’s across the country?

the guy was at a couple of the camps at PSU and most of our recruits/commits were there

Sounds like he’ll spend some quality time with Bolden.

that’s awesome. he was a big factor in bringing in Newsome earlier this year. he’s a very likeable and very highly respected guy for the younger QB’s coming out of highschool.

GRR

apparently the Rec system doesn’t know that it is STILL FRIGGEN JULY!!!

Someone might have to make a “July recruiting thread, Part II”

by The JuggerNitt on Jul 17, 2009 12:26 PM EDT reply actions

We might be able to wait

With Royer set to announce on the 30th, it might be a good idea to wait and then update for the “August Recruiting Thread” appropriately. Otherwise, I’m not sure we’ll get too much new info in the next 1.5 weeks.
