Around SBN: Identifying The 19th-Best Team In Baseball

Articles like this one I find annoying because they convey a completely different tone than similar pieces geared towards Penn State. Poor Urban is a tough disciplinarian, but kids will be kids. A kid being a kid is smoking in your apartment, drinking underage, and getting into a drunken fight. Pulling an AK-47 out of the trunk of your car and firing it into the air is in a whole different category. At Florida, Chris Bell would still be on the team.

As has been said before

We got the OTL special because it was news that we had lots of trouble. It just simply is NOT news that some of these other schools have trouble, it is the same old song and dance for them. Bama on suspension? get out of here, no way! It is kind of annoying, but I’ll take the positive spin that we are held to a higher standard.

Think of it like this, if the Pope is caught smoking pot, that is big news. If Snoop Dogg is caught smoking pot…well no one cares. Not a great analogy, but the general idea is in there somewhere.

Black Shoes. Basic Blues. No Name. All Game.

You'll be the first......

and last person to compare the Pope to Snoop Dog! Don’t venture out in a lightening storm!

though I doubt anyone ever thought

that we’d have a Pope who was part of the Hitler Youth, either.

DO YOU HAVE PRIDE, DANNY?

The story goes...

he was forced (?) to join. Maybe like we are forced to play Eastern Illinois!

by PaJoe on Jul 6, 2009 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

not saying he wasn't forced to, since I think all boys were required

doesn’t mean he wasn’t in it, though.

Besides, I don’t think the Pope smoking up would be that bad, anyway.

has that happened? if so, who would that be?

I’m not trying to be confrontational, just curious if this was what you meant, or if there was another instance of this.

By the way (and I’m not sure when they started issuing birth certificates, so this number could be much bigger), there were at least 8 presidents without US birth certificates ;-)

+1 for Veracity & Citation

I'll take him anyday..........

Pulling an AK-47 out of the trunk of your car and firing it into the air is in a whole different category. At Florida, Chris Bell would still be on the team.

You mean like beating up a cop and not getting kicked off the team ? That kind of category. PSU isn’t the only program where there is more to the story than the headlines read.

Penn State is the last school that needs to be pointing out other teams issues.

I’ll stand by my unabashed disdain for Florida fans, but I’ll stand up for their football program and Urban Meyer. I’d take him in Happy Valley anyday. They graduate, UF is a great school, 2 NCs in 3 years (probably about to be 3 in 4), Meyer does what he says he is going to do………I mean for God sakes he’s from Ashtabula, Ohio which is basically in Northwestern Pennsylvania. I’m making a generalization here, but I don’t think the PSU fanbase has too much of an understanding of how Meyer operates. The UF program isn’t your Steve Spurrier Gators. JMHO.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say with the Rashard Casey situation

you mean that seeing the headline “football player beats up cop, but not kicked off team” is misleading, because he didn’t actually just beat up a cop, and the cop was actually harassing him?

I’m not really sure in what circumstances you can be firing an AK-47 into the air that wouldn’t make it a bad thing. First off, who in the world even keeps a loaded AK-47 in their car, and then decides for any reason it is a good idea to fire it into the air?

I’m not saying that Meyer had any idea that Wilson owned an AK-47, but once he found out that A) he had one, and B) was willing to fire it randomly in the air…of course it could have been as “innocent” as certain players firing arrows into an apartment wall.

by The JuggerNitt on Jul 7, 2009 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

What I was saying..........

is that almost regardless of the crime, Meyer is going to wait to for the information to come in much like Paterno did with Casey. You can’t get wrapped around the axle about Meyer and his players when he is doing the same thing you laud Paterno for. Perhaps your arrow firing comparison is more fair.

Well, educate us then, dude

We’re not a bunch of deaf ears here, and you’ve easily got the street cred.

Just how does Urban Meyer operate?

See letsgopsu's post below.

That pretty much sums up how Meyer operates. You don’t get Tim Tebow because you are a scumbag.

I thought Tebow was sent by His Father to take the rest of Florida's sins upon Himself

so that they may be saved (and win a few National Championships and Heisman Trophies…and get with some really hot girls)

My issue is with the media slant, not Urban. He seems like a fine man. He is doing exactly what Joepa does, waiting to hear the full story, giving second, sometimes third chances, then cutting ties when it becomes clear kid is not worthy of the faith he has put in them. Urban is dealing the best he can, but Joepa, he is old, lost control of the program, blah blah.
