Will anyone come to Penn State's defense?
For a long long while now, Penn State fans have swallowed the hard facts that the 2009 football schedule leaves a lot to be desired. It sucks, in fact. No it's not entirely our fault, but I'm not really one for excuses; I'll take the lumps as they lie. However-- why is all of the talk on these boards about us not winning a national championship? When I think back in the history of College Football, I see a certain theme repeating itself... A non-BCS team from the west (Boise State, Utah, TCU) have a ridiculous record over some quality opponents. In some cases, the teams even go undefeated only to hear, "I think they should be given a shot to prove they're the best team in the land... but actually... it's the Bowl Conference Series Championship and they aren't from one of those conferences... besides they won't beat Oklahoma or Alabama anyway."
And of course, we all know how those turn out. My question is this. Why does Penn State, who plays in a BCS Conference get an automatic denial to a BCS championship game if they are undefeated? I honestly, really, don't see a way that they can be denied if they are one of two undefeated teams at the end of this season.
Thoughts? Sorry if this sounds like it's just a replay from before, but I just don't understand why everyone is writing off national championship automatically.

Thats a good question...
It’s one thing to tell a non-BCS team that they cant come to the party because they’re not in one of the golden conferences. They’re in effect saying “Silly non-BCS school, trix the crystal football is for kids the big boys from the golden conferences only”.
Its entirely another thing to tell a team from one of the BCS conferences that even though they’re one of the only two undefeated teams in the BCS conferences, they don’t get to play in the MNC because some people don’t think they ‘deserve’ it. In that case they’re saying “Lets admit this whole National Championship thing is a farce and entirely ignore anything that happens on the field between September and December and just crown the two MNC game teams in August.”

Umm..
what’s that saying about counting your chickens before they hatch? We don’t even know if we will get past Illinois at Memorial Stadium yet. If the situation that a BCS team actually does goes undefeated, voters will be hard pressed not to put them into the title game as long as there aren’t 2 other BCS undefeated teams. Let’s talk about that when Penn State gets past @Illinois, Ohio State, @Michigan, first.
looking ahead
Is something we can’t afford to do. Regardless of what the media may think of the Big Ten, we know better to think that just because we are the best team on paper, teams are going to roll over for us. It doesn’t work that way.
Yes our non-conference schedule is weak ( a lot of teams are doing it) but we still have to get through the Big Ten.
I’ll think national title when I’m flying to LA in January…until then,

I dont think the meat of the matter...
was complaining already about PSU getting kept out of the MNC. I think it was more about the thought process that leads to statements like ‘OMG look at that schedule, they shouldn’t be allowed to sniff the MNC game EVA!!’
If I remember to take my blue shaded glasses off and insert any other BCS team (West Virginia, Maryland, FSU) in the same situation, going undefeated and getting excluded from the MNC game, I would find that equally hard to believe. Admittedly, not something I would think about in July however if not for my blue tinted shades.

The thing I try to remember
is that, first and foremost, big ten bashing is in style. Just how it goes right now. I think the reason is two-fold
1) For fans they have had to for so long deal with inferiority to b10 teams on the field and an attitude to match it. The history of snobbery in this conference is probably credited to some more than others (cough cough Michigan). Regardless of whether the on field greatness is actually gone or not, they still see huge stadiums, great game day experiences, devoted fan bases, big TV dollars and on and on and on. So the fan side sees perceived blood in the water and latches on.
2) Media. You want lots of attention for a news story? Fire up the fan bases at these 11 schools. Well, we’re one of the top dogs in b10 now, and so the target is us, for better and for worse.
Correct me if I'm wrong, Adam
But what I think you’re saying is that the majority of people seem to be hedging their bets. Most people on here are reluctant to even whisper the words National Championship, let alone look ahead to one. I, however, am with you in believing that some sort of arrogance and excitement is needed.
That being said, I’m not saying we’re a shoe-in for the title game. I definitely realize that our only realistic shot at the MNC is to go undefeated. However, I don’t think there is anything wrong with bragging about your team and predicting a championship run. The FanPosts here are replete with bragging stories about recruits (see Newsome, Kevin, 2010 squad, entire) and past events (see Championships in the 80’s, Rambler’s daily boner pic of a current/former PSU player). Further, there are many posts dedicated to either directly making fun of other teams (DickRod, O$U) or taking pot shots at certain players/coaches (Wannstache, Laura). Why can’t this sort of attitude transition into some MNC talk?
At the end of the day, I’m going to root for time exactly the same in July as I do in October…with a fervor reserved for MNC runs. If a loss occurs, a loss occurs, and we can cheer for the Rose Bowl (Part One) and Big 10 championship. Until that happens though, I’m out for one thing only. "JoePa's final undefeated decade team"
you know he’s going undefeated in 2011, too, right?

Well done
Penn Staters belong at Penn State. The problem with a lot of kids is they just don’t know they are Penn Staters yet. -jesse. @ BSD

great
now we’re going to see pictures of people doing whatever is the opposite of shitting the bed (sucking it in? eating food? eating shit? I really don’t want to find out…)

Well
I just don’t understand the attitude of people who say “We can only hope to aim for a Rose Bowl” or “A 2 loss SEC team will probably beat out an undefeated Penn State in a national championship.”
This post was originally intended to mean “Will anyone in the media jump to Penn St’s defense if we go undefeated?” as people have done for Utah, Boise State, etc.
But I think it’s intriguing to see so many Penn State fans jumping to conclusions that we will not make a MNC no matter what. Not that there’s anything wrong with that line of thinking (either through pessimism for the schedule or just not trying to get hopes up).
It’s very safe to say that a 1 or 2 loss Penn State team will not qualify for a MNC appearance, and if that happens fine.
But if it doesn’t… and we do go undefeated… what then?
I mean, really, what else are we going to talk about in the offseason? This?

I'll go you one better:
If there are three undefeated teams from BCS Conferences, and they are Florida, Penn State, and Rutgers, I’m sure the State University of New Jersey will enjoy the Orange Bowl.
The Big East. Still a BCS conference today only because the BCS can’t afford to lose more support.
Fair enough
I was gonna give the original post a Yawn and note that for a guy ’who’s really going places’, this is a subject more than a tad recycled. But you’ve semi-defended yourselt here with a bacon dress (what the hell is she doing in pic2?)
Still, if we’re filling offseason space & time, I’d like to think we can drum up coverage more interesting/entertaining/original.

hm,
maybe it’s because I’ve been staring into SOA’s dreamy smile, but I haven’t seen anyone on this site try to offer rationale for a national championship since our schedule sucks so bad. That’s all I was trying to do with something that had a little history and fact behind it.
And I figured if things went south I had the bacon dress as a backup.
She very obviously is tasting herself in pic 2, just to prove that her dress tastes better.
"And I figured if things went south I had the bacon dress as a backup."
That’s good planning. We could all learn from this. It’s good to have a bacon dress in your back pocket. Could also be the salve on a terrible first date:
Boy: how’s your salad?
Girl: good
Boy: how bout this weather we’ve been having?
Girl: [crickets]
Boy: wanna try on this bacon dress?
Girl: let’s go!

ok take two
she’s licking the bacon-y goodness off her arm that was left as a residue when she put the dress on that morning and slid it up her arms? maybe?
/I don’t know where I was going with that either
Take three:
She’s checking the time.
If you gotta floss...

"Red, it took me sixteen years to get here. You play me, and I'll give ya the best I got."
WITH THEIR ONLY BEING 59 DAYS 24 MINUTES AND 37 SECONDS UNTIL
kickoff, I know we’re all getting antzy for things to get going. But, haven’t we learned anything from last year? We all thought that if we left Columbus undefeated we were going to Miami, and what happened two weeks later? I think we’re going to be in the running for the B10 title and the Rose Bowl. But we have to play one game at a time. And the last time I looked, Akron was the first game. Forget what’s going on below the Mason Dixon Line in the land that time forgot. You take care of your own business.
Personally, with having to break in three new people on the OL, plus new WR’s (I’m not worried about the secondary; after the Rose Bowl, plus that last drive against Iowa, anything is an improvement!), the soft schedule might allow them to get their feet wet and gain some confidence, and then move on to bigger and better things. Think 2005.
"and what happened two weeks later?"
Pat Devlin replaced Clark after the first possession, and, in classic John Shaffer “game manager” fashion, led the Nittany Lions to a close-but-not-so-close victory. We then crushed Indiana and Michigan State, before getting giving up 500 yards passing in a 49-35 loss to Oklahoma. If only Royster hadn’t hurt his ankle in the 1st quarter. If only…

Can Oklahoma win a BCS game?
I thought that wasn’t allowed, like three teams from the same conference.
That’s what made it so much worse. I don’t know if I’ll ever get over it.

How the hell would we have lost to OK even despite our secondary?
Our front seven would have eaten them alive.
Dude
I’m trying to convince myself that we would have lost so those shitbags in Iowa will stop bragging about stopping us from getting another title.

At least they are equally
good at stopping themselves from winning much of anything, save wrestling – and I have a feeling they’ll have PSU-envy there in the near future too.
One man doing the work of 100's for the good of 1000's
I think this post should just take Penn State out of it
and say, “Will anyone come to the defense of an undefeated BCS conference team who is potentially going to get snubbed from the National Championship Game because people don’t like the opponnets on the schedule?”
It is a fair debate, and I don’t really see it as putting the cart before the horse, since it is a purely speculative “what if” situation.
I mean heck, what if there are 8 undefeated teams this year? An equally interesting debate on what should be done.
how about no undefeated BCS teams, but seven 1-loss teams making up the top rankings?
basically the same situation.
And yes, there were 2 undefeated mid-majors, but apparently the BCS doesn’t care about them anyway.

Good point
But I think it might be harder to ignore if they were all undefeated. They were kind of able to hide behind the “well if you wanted a shot you should have won all your games” which is tantamount to bullshit when there are no undefeateds, but they used it anyway.

yup
similar to how LSU jumped Kansas, when LSU had 2 losses and Kansas had 1 (though LSU won the SEC while Kansas didn’t even play in their championship game)

The problem isnt our OOC schedule, it's the big ten
As evidenced by the fact that Texas Tech was able to leapfrog us last year despite having a far worse OOC schedule.
I dont think OUr OOC schedule matters, if anyone from the Big ten goes undefeated they are going to left out of the MNC game….. The exception being Ohio State, who scheduled the premier program in the country.
