Anybody involved with recreation, law, venues, can realize how frustrating it can be to satisfy all the needs and requirements of the ADA. Very few venues offer what is described in this article, and its an impossibility honestly at any main venue. It will be very interesting to see how this pans out, because this will definitely affect us.

True Story

During the 2007 season, my Dad’s season tickets were behind a few hearing impaired people, who must also have had season tix since we saw them more than once. I don’t know if it was the father or his son that was deaf (there was also another family member who may also have been deaf, I don’t remember that clearly. They seemed to enjoy every game just fine without subtitles on the big screen, although, I could see where that would help when a penalty is announced or something along those lines.

Zebras

Can’t they just follow the zebras signals when they make the penalty call?

Not everyone can

1. See the zebras, or;
2. interpret what the signals mean

by dawsonPSU10 on Aug 1, 2009 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

valid point on not being able to see the zebras

but not on being able to interpret what they mean.

It isn’t society’s responsibility to coddle you. If you have a disability where you can’t hear the penalty announced, then you should take it upon yourself to learn how to interpret the refs. Besides, it is good for anyone to know, as you get the penalty information quite a bit faster (and heck, more accurately, as the announcers sometimes mess it up anyway)

I agree with you

I know I don’t want subtitles on the big screen, however, someone is always going to disagree with that, especially someone who doesn’t know what the signals mean and needs it to be spelled out for them. Honestly, it’s probably naive to think this, but I don’t expect that to ever happen at PSU. I think 90% of the people in the stadium, if not more, know what those signals mean, just by being a PSU football fan. Again, I’m probably naive, but I would guess that we have less of the non-graduate fans than schools like tOSU or USC (and not that all non-alum fans are a bad thing). So I could see it being a much bigger issue at tOSU, where you have good number of non-alums coming to see a game, who may not have a tOSU or a football background.

honestly

it’s not too difficult to just be more informative on the scoreboard, especially now with that wrap around one they just installed.

maybe instead of some of the junk they put up there (silly animation, pump up videos for the volleyball team), be more active in putting up penalty calls, player’s names, just stuff that everyone wants to know not just hearing impaired.

Tthere’s often times during big games when everyone’s looking around like WTF was that, what just happened, what was that penalty? CAN I GET A REPLAY?!?!
SERIOUSLY SHOW A FRICKIN REPLAY!!

Anyway, yeah.

We just lost 15 yards?

F*ck it, who cares, I’m going for one of those delicious Berks hot dogs.

pretty certain

its big10 policy to not allow replays of plays under review.

Is it just me

or did they still do it last year anyway when there was a questionable play? Maybe the plays weren’t under review, idk.

by dawsonPSU10 on Aug 2, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would find that incrediably annoying

I cant stand closed captioning because I can’t look away. I HAVE to keep reading. Its a personal discipline problem, but annoying none the less.

Also, Is there room to caption everything on the scoreboard? I cant think of a place to put captions at beaver stadium. Even those ribbon boards would be severely hampered by the captioning requirement.

"...because I can't look away."

I have the same affliction. Closed captioning would really undermine my live experience.

i can assure you:

tim curley and gang are watching this very closely. it may mean less advertising, and may create a new position up in the booth to do captioning/etc.

Can I sue OSU also?

I went to the game last year, and was offended that they were announcing things. I can’t follow the game at all when I hear people announcing things.

Seriously, how can someone not follow a game without the announcers? Have you never been to a sports bar where all but one of the TVs are on mute (and it always seems the game you are actually interested in is on mute). Especially at a game, though, where all the pertinent information is up on the scoreboard (time, downs, yardline, yards to go) and you can watch the refs to see any penalty information.

I also love the “unspecified damages”. I’m gonna bet he’s suing for quite a bit more than he spent on any tickets/travel arrangements.

Honestly, it's probably harder to follow a game WITH the announcers, as we all know

or at least less painful to watch. Aside from the occasional Herbie word of wisdom/reason, or a hilarious Musburger tangent, the announcers often suck and make you wish you could just watch the game with sound, but no one talking you through the blatantly obvious or off-topic BS that they usually do.

Really?

They don’t do this already? Close captioning is a no brainer.

At the game?

Unless they did something like turn the light ribbon into a giant ticker, this seems like it would be next to impossible.

PIrates do it.

So do the Steelers.

In fact, the Pirates go so far as to transcribe the lyrics of Carmina Burnia, which are in latin.

If I recall, I think Pitt does too.

Where do they do it?

Is it on the jumbotron, or do they have something like our fantabulous light ribbon?

The Pirates have a dedicated spot for it on the Jumbotron

I believe the Steelers do as well

The ADA has become a joke,

and no has the guts to stand up to some of these whiny “You must cater to me!” hustlers.

Case in point: Mr. Vincent Sabino. Dude, I’m sorry you have a hearing problem, but why is it everyone else’s responsibility to make your experience the same as everyone else’s? You’re not the same as everyone else.

This sentence is ludicrous: "When I go to a game, I’m never able to follow the game," said Vincent Sabino. "It takes away from being a fan." Vinny, if you can’t follow a game without being told everything you just saw with your own two eyes, you’re not a fan. Or even close. You’re an attention whore.

This is rich: “So what kinds of captioning would Sabino like to see? Captioning, it turns out, for everything from referee calls to song lyrics.” That’s right – a deaf guy needs to read the lyrics of a song he can’t even hear being sung. Bullshit.

Vinny, just cut to the chase, will ya? Wait – what’s this? “He also seeks an unspecified amount of compensatory damages”.

Wow – never saw that one coming.

Thanks, Vince. You’re an embarassment to every hearing-impaired person that makes an effort, and every handicapped person that doesn’t sit around with their hand out. Not enough for you, Sir Vince, to make a stand on principle. YOU want the coin. How admirable.

Yes, yes – as RUTS will attest, I’m an evil conservative doucheabag. Fine. I’m just sick of moochers, crybabies and scam-asses. Every government-run program that’s started with good intentions, inevitably bloats out to try to be everything to everyone.

K. Rant over. Fire at will.
