Nitt Picks is Slow Out of the Gate This Morning

Ok lots of stuff for you today. Let's just get to it without the sugar coating.

Cory Giger points out in the Altoona Mirror that Evan Royster has an outside chance of setting two distinctions this season.

Evan Royster is on pace to leave Penn State holding two noteworthy distinctions, one relating to the other.

Royster has a chance to not just set, but to blow away the Nittany Lions' career rushing record. The redshirt junior tailback has gained 1,749 yards his first two seasons and needs only 1,650 yards over the next two years to surpass Curt Warner's mark of 3,398.

The other distinction? Royster might end up owning one of the school's most prestigious records yet may go down as one of the most underrated players in program history.

As I pointed out in the running back breakdown in We Are Penn State 2009, Royster has an outside chance of breaking the school's career rushing mark if he can top 1,650 yards this season. And if he doesn't pass the mark this year he will certainly pass it next year. Giger is correct that it's unbelievable Royster hasn't gotten more publicity than he has to date. A big reason for that is the fact Royster was overshadowed last season by players like Beanie Wells, P.J. Hill, and Shonn Greene. The other problem was the talent that surrounded him in the Spread HD and the bumps and bruises that limited his carries. When you only carry the ball 12-15 times per game it's hard to dominate the highlight reel of the game.

Star-divide

Giger also pointed out this weekend that there may be some changes on the offensive line.

Starters: Sr. Dennis Landolt (6-4, 303) said he moved to LT this summer; that means So. DeOn'tae Pannell (6-5, 313), the projected starter there, would move to RT; nothing is finalized, however, though it would make sense to have the more experienced Landolt protecting QB Daryll Clark's blindside.

This is something to keep an eye on, but don't take it too seriously at this point. Coaches often juggle positions in the offseason to cross train players and see what they have to work with. The important thing is they settle on a lineup when camp starts and stick with it to develop the right chemistry. If we see a different starting lineup against Syracuse than we see against Akron, it might be time to hit the panic button in regards to the offensive line.

More Evidence Mark Dantonio is a Jerk

If you recall, around the time Robert Bolden committed to Penn State there was a lot of commotion about Michigan State shutting the door on him a week or two before then. Nobody really had a good explanation at the time, but MSU blog Jolly Green Giants offers one now.

In reality, Robert Bolden was looking to wear the #1 jersey at Michigan State. Now, there would usually be no issue with a pretty simple request. However, Mark Dantonio’s policy would state that a player has to earn the #1 jersey with All-Big Ten selection.

I don't know. I find it hard to believe even Dantonio could turn his back on a top ten quarterback over a jersey number issue. Doesn't really affect anything, but it's a curious piece of information to discuss.

This Week In Schadenfreude

Ohio State kicked off their fall camp this weekend, but as opening days go it was pretty much a downer. This from Eleven Warriors.

Unfortunately, all anyone wanted to talk about were the players not at camp. Rumored academic casualties Ray Small and Robert Rose did not report, but the biggest news of the day was the surprise announcement that Tyler Moeller was in the hospital.

Moeller and Small are expected to be major contributors this fall. Small may not make the grade in the class room while Moeller is is dealing with a potential season or career ending head injury.

And our friends in Ann Arbor are quick to point out it is they who dump their girlfriends and not the other way around. MGoBlog offers this commentary on the information released about the departure of quarterback Justin Feagin.

Feagin was a last-minute addition to Michigan's first class under Rodriguez when it became clear that Rodriguez wasn't likely to acquire a higher-rated quarterback recruit. He did not work out, obviously. The Freep article dryly notes that Feagin "struggled to learn the playbook" mere paragraphs after describing Feagin's extensive marijuana habit.

The onfield impact of Feagin's departure remains nil; the off-field stuff… well, at least when a Michigan player violates team rules he actually violates them. Woo spin!

Royster

He could leave after this year if he projects high enough. I hope he doesn’t because I’d like to get one more year for Dukes and the other young backs to develop but I agree that he is vastly underrated and could go down as one of the greatest backs in PSU history.

Leaving

I’m worried about that as well. I believe he’s hinted at possibly leaving if he does well this year. I’d love for him to stay and break the record, as well as get national attention and respect for how great of a back he is. So I have mixed feelings about this season for him. I want him to, and think he’ll have an incredible year this season. With the passing game likely to drop a little, he’s going to be utilized more this season than he’s needed to in the past. But at the same time, that fantastic season will likely lead to his leaving.

Well

Dude is online to graduate this school year anyway. He’s a senior, he’ll have his degree and I love seeing Royster on the field but if he has a good year, I can say farewell and good luck in the NFL with no hard feelings.

Re: Dantonio

I think he’s a prick, but I doubt the entire reason they stopped going after Bolden was because of the #1 jersey. First off, didn’t they get their first choice in QB, and didn’t they only want 1 QB this year? (though I’d imagine they could have found a schollie if Bolden REALLY wanted to go).

On the other hand, if Bolden was adamant about wearing the #1 jersey before earning it (which I think is a fine tradition to start), and said something along the lines of “if I don’t get to wear #1 then I’m not coming,” then all the power to MSU for cooling on the kid. I find it hard to believe Bolden would say such a thing, though.

Smells fishy

So let’s say Bolden insisted on wearing the #1 jersey. And let’s say Dantonio told him to take a hike.

If it meant that much to Bolden I have to think he gave Joe Paterno the same request. And I have to think Paterno told the kid either a) earn it or b) it’s already taken but we’ll see. Unless he had a come to Jesus moment after Dantonio slammed the door and he didn’t bring it up with Paterno. But I can’t imagine Paterno promised any kid a jersey number. Especially #1, which lately has been reserved for a cornerback. I can’t recall any kid ever wearing the #1 jersey before Anwar Phillips.

The thing that's great about Dantonio

Is that he handles pressure and conflict like a 12-year-old. As much as I think Mike Hart was a bit of a prick, a grown man has not place getting into a spat of words with him. The time-out thing was classic, plain view spite in the face of the inevitable, and this smells of simply making up an excuse instead of accepting reality.

yeah, that's why I said I find it hard to believe Bolden would be so adamant about a jersey number

and then decide to go to a team that emphasizes team-first as much as, or more than, any other program.

I was just trying to point out that if it was about the jersey, and Dantonio stuck to his guns in trying to establish a new tradition, I don’t see anything wrong with that.

Again, I mainly thought the reason MSU cooled on Bolden was that they already got their desired QB, and only wanted to get 1 this year.

From what I recall at the time

There was some stink about Bolden’s father wanted a job with the university in exchange for his son’s services and that’s why Dantonio told him to take a hike. It was just message board chatter so TIFWIW. It’s reasonable that he wouldn’t put the same demand on PSU unless he was willing to move to PA.

man I really hope none of this is true

or if it is, that PSU is far enough away from daddy that we don’t repeat a similar experience with a QB and his high maintenance father

there was a post in comments on a story on cnnsi that alluded to his Dad getting a job at PSU. I pretty much ignored it because it was negative and in the “Joe is old” mold

Dantonio is a jerk – remember when he called a meaningless timeout with 4 seconds left to prolong the game so fans would have to stand in the cold longer to see PSU bring the championship out on the field (a moment that hadn’t happened up to that point at Beaver Stadium). Asked after the game about it and he mumbled some mumbo jumbo about how he wanted a 3rd string QB to get some time or something.

I also heard he will not let anyone wear #4

until they shoot themselves in the leg outside of a bar.

The validity of this rumor will probably remain unknown until he comes to Penn State and wears #6 or #17 similar to the rumor a couple years ago that they would no longer play zombie nation because the stadium could not habdle it structurally.

I know it's easy to pile on RichRod, and people do sometimes unfairly

But that Feagin thing is bad, bad news. They recruited a guy who was a known drug dealer and had a plain view rap sheet. Not something you can really wash away as bad luck, oversight or even bad character evaluation.

the question is

What are they going to do about it?

They picked the guy afterall, it’s not like they can act legitimately surprised. And to turn around and fire the guy now is even more commical, b/c honestly all of his shananigans have been par for the course.

Furthermore, imagine for a moment that this season goes poorly, say 5-7, and it leads to RichRod being fired. What do they do with the recruits RichRod has brought in? What do they tell the kids who are at that point in their 2nd HC change? Do they stick with the wierd run-option spread RichRod is using, or do they let the new HC decide on the system? What if they go back to the pro/NFL system?

All of these questions lead me to believe that RichRod is not going anywhere. I think UM is stuck with this guy for a while.

He came in with such soft support...

kind of like W on Iraq. 95% of the country “supported” it, with a sold 50% of them ready to bail on that support at the first sign of trouble. And so it goes with RichRod.

The Michigan people are trying to put a brave face on it, but they have to hate this guy. He has got to do something in the league (7 or 8 wins) to save his job, or I think he has to beat either Penn State or Ohio State.

Basicly

He can’t lose to Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State for a second year in a row. No chance. Also, before somebody says Penn State doesn’t matter in this equation, Gary Moeller got fired after losing to Penn State twice in a row.

but at what cost?

If they let him go after this season they have basically nuked the football program. sure they have talent, but every regime change is going to shake loose a bunch of kids, plus the unsigned recruits are subjec to flee, not to mention the fact that whoever comes in is going to have a mess even w/out a mass exodus. I just think the program is too fragile right now. I would be shocked if UM let Richy go even if he goes 3-9 again.

What's the cost of keeping him?

It’s a fair assumption that RichRod will get Michigan competitive again. But that’s only an assumption.

He was good at WVU, which has much lower recruiting standards, and much less competition. RichRod may have thought, and a lot of his backers certainly thought, that “Hi I’m Rich Rodriguez and I Coach Michigan” would pretty much be their recruiting tactic. It hasn’t worked nearly as well as they expected.

I still don’t think it’s the most likely outcome, but RichRod not turning it around is certainly a possibility at this point. Think of it this way, RichRod is not the coach of the same Michigan team those folks followed since 1968.

Dantonio and the #1 jersey looks to be all rumor

If you found it hard to believe, that’s probably because it was mostly rumor, as discussed by this thread at Spartan Tailgate:

Robert Bolden Discussion Thread

Regardless, as a heads up, I think using the word “evidence” in your header is a bit misleading considering none of the evidence is really concrete. I can’t disprove that rumor, but nothing I’ve read has convinced me that they’re validity in it.
