Nitt Picks Is Hip To Your Jive, Son

It's flashy, It's cool, It's SOCIAL MEDIA!
It's the bee's knees. Yesterday the Penn State Athletic Department "went social", and to prove how ahead of the curve they really are, they announced it with a press release:
Penn State Football's video website - www.GOPSF.com - will introduce a major social networking component when it re-launches Monday at noon. The popular video vault, which features more than 100 videos, originally launched in spring of 2006 had become a destination site for football fans and recruits.
It's also aggregating relevant twitter feeds, promoting Flikr photos and bringing you totally awesome teasers of The Penn State Football Story like this photo:

That's a family shot that includes Ollie Ogbu. I have no idea which one is him. (Apparent bio coming with trailer here.)
Jokes aside, the upgrade is actually a pretty nice one, and although content is light, the foundation is solid and I hope they devote more resources to it.
What's interesting is that they appear to be harnessing the power of user generated content, allowing it to flow freely and with energy rather than demanding is be protected, hidden, and the stuff of RIAA lawsuits.
Homecoming, 2010? We've got your breaking news, via SOCIAL MEDIA WOOO:

Quitters. Joe Posnanski, who I've been skipping over lately as a result of an increase in card trick videos, became his insightful self again with this comment:
Reporter: "Well, at least you have to be proud that your team didn’t quit."
Kansas State coach Bill Snyder: "They don’t let you quit."
I’ve long wondered what it really means for a team to "quit." You hear people say it all the time. This team quit. That coach needs to go because his team quit. The other team lost but they never quit. And all that. The problem is the word, "quit." It connotes a certain unfathomable image … of Roberto Duran turning his back and walking away during the Sugar Ray Leonard fight, of a tennis player tanking points when the set looks lost, of a golfer picking up his ball and disqualifying himself.
I don't really know where I'm going with. He spends the rest of the post backing off his skepticism, although I wish he wouldn't have.
It ends up being a kind of lame excuse, most of the time, and not something that adds any insight despite there being undeniable validity to the point that motivation can contribute to success.
But it matters so much in college football. The Greatest Player Ever staged a heroic 4th quarter drive against a once #8 Wisconsin just a week before Penn State rolled over them (with their band back, to boot!) because they had mailed it in. The perception is so easy to play up, but the reality of it is impossible to really measure. It's all just kind of funny, I guess.
The good 'ol days. Remember when we read a paragraph like this almost daily?
"That's not fair," said Sam Haulman, president of CATV, which serves Danville, Lewisburg, Milton and Watsontown. "It would require a rate increase and not enough customers want it for the cost to be absorbed by all."
For the 800th time: it's not fair that I have to pay for the Oxygen channel. That argument is stupid. The war is lost, cable providers. You're Lt. Hiroo Onoda, and the longer you stay on that island the more batsh*t crazy everyone is going to think you are.
But alas it doesn't look good, at least not yet, for those of you who are stuck with Service Electric Cablevision or CATV.

Am i the only one who finds gopsf.com to be awful to browse through? The videos dont always work, and different web pages have trouble loading. They need a professional web devoloper to redo that site. It looks bad.
It's clunky, for sure,
but I’m happy they are making an effort at substantive content. I agree, though, the actual tech side could use some work.

Behind The Music
Has anyone ever seen the Behind the Music about R.V.W.? Wow, so awesome! Apparantly, at one point, he claims that Suge Knight hung him from a hotel balcony by his ankles, which he later contradicts by denying the whole thing in the same episode. And of course there is his infamous explanation on the glaring differences between “Ice Ice Baby” and “Under Pressure.” Man, that show was so great!

Yeah, too much with card tricks and posts on the Royals lately. But, he’s still one of the best out there. I thought the post about quitting was very good. It’s true, teams don’t necessarily “quit”, they just get to a point where they realize it doesn’t really matter what they do.
post on the Royals
He’s a baseball writer who’s lived in Kansas City since 1993. You should be proud he still writes instead of stabbing himself with a pen sometime before two Royals outfielders collided on a routine out and sometime after Ken Harvey was the Royals All-star selection.
The point on the 2009 Royals and quitting is very poignant. Fans of the Royals thought they had put it together, that they would be somewhere in the 80-85 win range, that it would be entertaining ball if not championship baseball—but they’re on pace for another last place finish. After almost two decades of this, I think the fans are just starting to quit. The investment just hasn’t paid off, and a great baseball city is at its end.
It's sad really
The Royals, Reds, Orioles, and Pirates were once the class of baseball. Now they are among the worst franchises in sports.

Will Greg Paulus Continue To Dominate Big Ten Schools In 2009?
Ok, it’s early and I’m tired, so maybe I’m not getting it. But he can’t even be halfway serious about this, right? “Because with the way Greg Paulus has owned the Big Ten, the Gophers, Lions, and Wildcats have a bit more reason to worry this September.” Give me a break.
Speaking both as a Penn State alum and a current UNC grad student, I CANNOT WAIT to see Greg Paulus get absolutely obliterated by Lee, Bowman, Odrick, Crawford, and whoever else happens to find their way into the Cuse backfield (so pretty much everyone, right?)
Correct Me If I'm Wrong
But aren’t these two completely different sports that we’re talking about here? Also, since when did Syracuse join the Big Ten? What an asinine article.

Also funny
when you’re talking about a basketball player who is best known for diving and flopping all over the court…not exactly qualities you look for in a quarterback.
(I still feel a little guilty linking that b/c of what happened to the kid on the other side of that deal.)

The Hit
I don’t remember. Did they ever determine whether he led with the helmet or not? To me it looks like Robinson tucked in and turned, leaving the kid to ram his head into Robinson’s shoulder. Either way, incredible hit, but sorry it ended the kid’s career.
Yeah, Robinson also asked that it never be used in PSU promo videos(i heard)
Also, it is almost funny watching Robinson after the play, because he kind of goes to pump his fist for making a great play, but realizes he hurt the guy and then just kind of does an awkward arm wave thing.

"Everyone has a plan, until they get punched in the mouth."
The article didn't
affect me as negatively.
Kid was a legit #1 QB 5 years ago. Chooses to chase dream and play basketball for Duke (since he is a flopping, overachieving, athletic white kid – he’s a perfect match). As point guard the guy did have something to do with Duke going 7-1 against Big Ten Teams in BB.
Since he has a year of eligibility left, why not see if he still has what it takes to be a QB. Since Syracuse plays 3 BigTen teams this year, blah blah blah.
I’m less of a Duke hater than at anytime of my life. I’m not letting it blind me from the Paulus story being kind of cool. Great story or not, I would like to see PSU remind him that he hasn’t played football in 4 years.

Should we.......
be proud that Penn State doesn’t let just anyone in even if they are a 4 star recruit or disappointed that we recruited somebody who probably wasn’t going to qualify to begin with ? Being associated with Givens is the kind of stuff that “Paterno is recruiting borderline players and that’s why we have the resurgence in PSU football” articles are made of.

Oh Ferchrissake...
I don’t mean for this to come off like a personal attack, but are you high on crack? The fact that College Football can be the only gateway for kids who are ‘borderline’ to get a college education isn’t a flaw in how Penn State is running their program- it’s one of the things that makes College Football so great.
Remember the big hullabaloo a couple of years ago when somebody (I think it was Fisher DeBerry) made a comment about being limited in the recruits he could pursue, and everybody branded him a racist? JoePa sat down for an interview with John Saunders late that season, and gave the best explanation I think I’ve ever heard- it’s not a question of race or anything like that… it’s a matter of some kids wanting it more than others. A kid who comes from a college-educated home in a nice, quiet suburban neighborhood isn’t necessarily going to be the best player, because he won’t have had to work as hard to get where he is. There have probably been hundreds of kids in Joe’s tenure who were close to not qualifying academically, but Joe wanted to give them a shot to be the first one in their family to go to college and get a degree. Anybody who doesn’t get that must think the whole ‘Molder of Men’ line is just idle words, and their opinion can’t be worth much.

Don't shoot anyone Lee Harvey :)
Let me start by saying the academic standards for football players is low enough to begin with. Coaches shouldn’t be going after guys who are borderline to that standard. My opinion.
I think there is selective perception. If this were a Florida or Alabama recruit there would be people on here ripping Urban Meyer and Nick Saban left and right. Maybe you wouldn’t be, but if you are paying attention to the posts on here over the last 3 years or so, you would see what I am talking about. They wouldn’t be getting the “molder of men” treatment.
I would expect a football team to mirror society from the standpoint of the inverse relationship between crime and education. So when you see a guy not get into the school AND you have people in the media saying that Paterno has been recruiting borderline players (I read this to be academically AND character-wise) then I would argue that Givens not getting into Penn State is potential fuel to the fire.
I understand this isn’t the first time Penn State has recruited somebody borderline academically. That goes without saying. I’m saying that in today’s world, you have to be careful about stuff like this from a PR standpoint. The Penn State fanbase has a reputation for talking about “Success without honor is an unseasoned dish” and “we graduate” and “we play fair” etc. etc. That makes PSU a target in the eyes of others. Nobody cares when a Democrat turns out to be gay because he probably wasn’t helping pass anti-gay legislation. Everybody goes apeshit when the Republican Senator sticks his foot under the airport stall door. That’s all I’m saying.
Go State.

Borderline Academic...
is an entirely different ballgame than borderline criminal. DC17 – borderline academic (had to go to prep school). You want to argue he shouldn’t have been given a shot?
Furthermore, your argument unreasonably links two traits that are quite disimilar. The education/crime inverse is not an intelligence/crime inverse. Its a societal issue resulting from those in high crime areas not recieving educational opportunities. If your argument was questionable character, that is one thing, but not questionable academics.
We are not normal. We are legends.

The link........
is education and crime. Not intelligence and crime. Academic issues don’t imply a lack of intelligence necessarily, but the they DO imply, by definition, being uneducated or undereducated and there IS an inverse relationship between “education” and “crime”. That isn’t debateable. It doesn’t matter if you come from a high crime area or not, if you aren’t taking advantage of the educational opptys you are being afforded you are more likely to be in trouble. This is a whole other converation.
I don’t have a problem with DC 17. I don’t think he is the norm and I would hope that Penn State or any other college for that matter, would not make a habit out of recruiting guys that statistically are likely to fail.
Eric Watters Atlanta, Ga.

Nice...
So it’s only white legacy kids from Downingtown who Penn State should be recruiting? …and we shouldn’t touch the black kid from an economically-troubled area like Youngstown, just because he’s ‘statistically more likely’ to fail?
I’m going to stop before I say something I’ll regret later.

I haven't interjected race.......
at all. I have no idea where you are coming from. In fact, I think I plainly said I have NO problem with DC 17.
This is a prime example of why race relations in this country blow. You take something and turn it into what you want it to say. When I was referring to statistics and failing, I was referring to anyone who barely qualifies academically. Not black guys who barely qualify.
Eric Watters Atlanta, Ga.
"If you hear Ric Flair is in town......WOOOOO........you KNOW things are takin' place".

I'm talking about the wonderfully vague term: "statistics"
In one breath you say:
I don’t have a problem with DC 17.
…and in the next:
I don’t think he is the norm and I would hope that Penn State or any other college for that matter, would not make a habit out of recruiting guys that statistically are likely to fail.
I don’t feel like chasing numbers, but I’m guessing that the odds of a kid from a blue-collar family in an economically-depressed area like western Pennsylvania / eastern Ohio even graduating from high school are lower than those of a kid from Chester county who has at least one parent who has a college degree. Throw in the statistical trends that go along with race, and I’d bet the odds of somebody like Clark succeeding get even longer still. You’re saying that no D-1A school should look at a kid from that situation if he’s academically marginal, just because he’s more likely to fail according to some statistical model.
Everybody deserves a shot to make something of their life. Givens had one with Penn State, and apparently made the decision that he wanted something else more. I wish him well, but that doesn’t mean we should throw up our hands and say that every kid from that same situation isn’t worth giving a chance.

Clark went to Prep School
If GIvens had gone to prep school and subsequently been admitted, I doubt Eric would have a problem with it.
I am unaware that Givens had any sort of “questionable background” besides the fact that from all accounts he got a shitty high school education. Much like Daryll Clark.
Getting a shitty High School education is a problem, one that’s compounded, not helped by letting them in school. Wouldn’t you agree that sends the “academics are not important” message?

I saw the link. I do read for comprehension, but thanks.
The leap that you were making in your post was that education = intelligence/or academic prowess (i.e., people with academic issues are more likely to be criminals). This is where I respectfully disagree. The statistics you cite (or the ones you appear to cite) are most certainly skewed by the geopolitical landscape I noted above. I simply thought you were making a sweeping generalization that incorrectly linked two distinctly different traits, character and academics and called you on it.
Its not worth continuing the discussion, but I tend to lean towards the side of JoePa on this one. He’s turned around more troubled kids than I have.

Joe and "troubled" kids.
Some of our all time greats were “troubled” kids. Even though i put “troubled” in quotes because it could mean many things, whatever. It is all about perspective.
Clark and Enis went to the same prep school. Bobby Engram stole a radio. Kerry Collins was a drunk. Joe and Sue would take kids into their home to help them study and stay on the straight and narrow. I trust Joe’s judgement like many others here.
Most of these guys turned out to be quite fine citizens and football players after a rough patch or start to adulthood. I think they would all agree Joe had a large hand in making that happen.
This was an unfortunate situation, but Mr. Givens still gets an education and gets to play football, just not at PSU. The details are hazy but I feel like this is just not as big of a deal as it seems. Maybe I am too passive. I just would need really good proof before I believe this kid was lied to by Joe in any way.

Big difference between academic issues and character issues.
For starters, academic issues are easy to gauge: you have grades and test scores. Character issues are very difficult to gauge: kids are young, in specific environments they won’t be in in college (good and bad), etc.
I don’t have any problem with recruiting kids with grade issues as long as they are taken care of i.e. DC17, and as long as the focus is on graduating and not just keeping them afloat while they are useful to the football team. Paterno’s graduation record is stellar, and that’s part of why I’m okay with this.
The OTL thing was a character accusation, that we were taking on fightin’ drinkin’ trouble makers, and we weren’t before, and that the coaches knew they were doing this. This was obviously bullshit.
