Game of the past you'd most like to attend [Poll UPDATE!]
Got this idea from behindthesteelcurtain, but I thought it would be an interesting topic considering PSU's rich football history.
If you could attend only 1 Penn State football game from any year, which one would you choose?
I could already think of some common answers, but let's see what we could come up with. Pick a game and give a brief summary of why you chose that one (for some of the younger guys, we don't remember everything surrounding some of the bigger games in PSU's past, so this could also serve as a PSU history lesson). If we get a couple good answers, I'll throw up a poll, because we know that no BSD FanPost is complete without one
UPDATE! UPDATE! Poll added based on people's comments:
Thanks for the fanpost! Please do not post any content from a premium site that requires a subscription. Also, if you just want to share a link consider using fanshots instead. Thanks.

1983 Sugar Bowl
Gets the nod over the 1987 Fiesta Bowl because I don’t think I could watch that game on a first run basis again, and 1981 Pitt because it was for the National Title.
That and it’s in New Orleans. Partying after the National Title on Bourban Street would kick six different kinds of ass.

1962 Regular Season game against Syracuse
If I had the chance I’d love to see the game as it once was-with platoon football, rah-rah cheerleading, and single bar helmets. This game-which everyone can read a summary in the 2009 edition of We Are Penn State magazine-sounds like it was an amazing game to boot.

Others by decade
-2005 Regular Season Game vs Ohio State
-1994 Regular Season Game vs Ohio State
-1986 Regular Season Game at Alabama
-1974 Orange Bowl
-1959 Liberty Bowl
-A game from the 1947 season. Maybe the 75-0 win against Fordham in New York City. Hey, at least it’s NYC in the late ’40s.

Was that the one
Where Jim Brown and Lenny Moore went toe-to-toe for four quarters on offense and defense? That would have been a monster game to witness.

My bad, it was the 1955 game.
I don’t know where I got my sources. Bad me.
In that case, I’ll go with the 1955 Syracuse game and the 1969 Orange Bowl.

I was at the 69 Orange Bowl
while the ending was great…a big let down, then the flag and a new play and Bobby Campbell running in the two point conversion, going down onto the field…that was great. It wasn’t that much of a game. We dominated but couldn’t put Kansas away. It was 58 minutes of dull, mistake filled, frustrating football….then two minutes of fantastic individual and team efforts by both the offense and defense.
Just a side note, two of our most hated FB programs tOSU (then #1) and USC (#2) played for the “MNC” in the 1969 Rose Bowl that was over before the Orange Bowl started.

2005 whiteout
It was the perfect storm rolling through Happy Valley. OSU had national title hopes and a roster that included players like Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Jr, and Santonio Holmes. PSU was equally matched and featured MikeRob, Dwill, and everyone’s favorite, Poz. I think the atmosphere around this game would never be matched, from the student section whiteout, to the 108+ thousand fans, to the zombie nation playing every other play, everything I heard about this game made me want to be there instead of watching it on TV. The game delivered too, a tough, nail-biting 17-10 Penn State win. But I think the most important thing about this game was that it served as a segway from the tough years of the early 2000s, to what we have now

Agreed
I totally agree with you on this one. It was a great game and the atmosphere was electric. Downtown State College was nuts and was one of the most thrilling times I had up at Dear Old State. When Tamba put Troy on his head I thought my heart was going to jump out of my chest. I also liked the guerilla White-Out that went on, it just seemed so spontaneous and you could tell that there was something in the air that weekend. Aside from the excitement that this game provided, it also served as a symbolic purpose in letting the nation (and us, really) know that Penn State was back as a serious threat.

i still get goosebumps
remembering that game. came back from a month in new orleans cleaning up katrina and rita that friday night, made it to the game just beside myself that the dark years seemed over. and you’re right about the electricity—the whole game. crazy time, probably one of my fondest memories. one of those games that i’ll eventually see on espn classic or something and say, yeah, i was there. i was part of that. and it was great.

1982 Nebraska game
Penn State as normal not ranked what they deserved, played Big Red in Happy Valley, got a lead — let it go, and with with 1:18 left drove down the field and after the sideline call (known as “McClosky’s Corner”) where the tight end caught the ball around the end zone and very close to out of bounds [on the wrong side] … Kirk Bowman (known as Stone Hands) caught his second touchdown pass of the game to snatch victory. Downtown State College was such a buzz that night, even a better feeling than the 2005 OSU game… We Are….

cited that game as the reason they wouldn’t “let” us share the title in 1994, saying it cost them a national championship since they would have been undefeated without that game. Glad we got a national championship out of that year. Oh, and since no one else did it. PENN STATE

Trivial Fact
Bob Dylan played a concert with Phil Lesch (of the Grateful Dead) that night at the BJC. Not even Dylan and the Dead could save that night.
That was set up to be one of the greatest days I ever had at Penn State, and it wound up being one of the most disappointing days of my entire life.

But the New Orleans thing was heavy on my heart. At that time I was still a Nawlins virgin, and leaving the Orange Bowl after Chafie’s catch, I was high-fiving other PSU fans with chants of ‘see you in Nawlins, see you in Nawlins.’
I never saw them in Nawlins.

rode down to college ave from southgate drive on the hood of a buddy’s car. We were going to have a big party, but people said they didn’t want to come out because of all of that snow. Called my roomates from work and told them maybe we shouldn’t get a keg. They picked up several cases instead . . . it was all gone by halftime. My Dad went to this game with his PSU roommate (still his best friend, and it sounded like a great time
He told me a story about being somewhere in New Orleans (probably a bar before the game, but I don’t remember the details), and this older perfect southerner Georgia couple comes up to my dad and his best friend and asks, “We’ve been wonderin’, what exactly does Nittany mean?”, and my Dad’s roommate without missing a beat says, “It’s an old Indian word that means ‘well hung’.” (Clearly they must have had a few drinks by this point) And the Georgia guy completely buys it, and smiles and says, “Well, I guess we’re all a little Nittany then, aren’t we?” I laughed so hard the first time I heard this story.

Hmm, this is a hard one
the “obvious” one would be the 1987 Fiesta Bowl (or 83 Sugar Bowl), but I’m assuming that I would be who I am NOW going to that game, and would be able to fully appreciate them. At the time of the game I probably didn’t even know what Penn State was, let alone care about college football, though, so I don’t really feel that bad not having been there.
The one game I regret most not going to was the 2005 OSU game. I’ve been to pretty much every “big game” for Penn State (both good and bad, mostly home, but a few of the away ones as well) since 98, and this one I still really regret not getting to (in my defense it was the first big home game since I moved to Michigan, and couldn’t get away for the weekend). This one seems to be one of the most “exciting” games in (at least recent) PSU history, on par, or better than the 2002 Nebraska game.

That’s the 48-14 game.
Growing up in Pittsburgh during a time when this rivalry didn’t exist has made me wish I was able to see just one Pitt-Penn State game. I know all the reasons why we don’t play them now, and I agree with them for the most part, but I still wish I’d been able to experience the rivalry at it’s zenith.

I almost picked this in the poll
My father (a Pittsburgh native his whole life, but a PSU grad, although he did go to Pitt for grad school) went to this game, and the story he told me about it was always one of my favorites to hear, so I’ll relay the story. He went into the stadium and his seat, unfortunately was behind this old Pitt alum. Game starts, Pitt goes up 14-0, and this old alum being a typical Pitt douche, and knowing there are PSU fans around him and starts screaming, “RUN UP THE SCORE! RUN UP THE SCORE!”. Then PSU ties it up, the guy gets pretty quiet. Then PSU starts to make Marino look like a little girl, and we start dominating. So my dad, knowing full well the douche is still in front of him, counters with, “RUN UP THE SCORE! RUN UP THE SCORE!” If I remember right, the Pitt guy left before the game was even over. I would have loved to have seen the heartbreak of #1 Pitt being completely crushed by us.

2002 Nebraska
Was in 10th grade at the time, watching on TV. Knew my college decision after that one was over.
It was all worth it as a sophomore in the 2nd row at OSU 2005. After Tamba’s sack, it wasn’t even cheering, it was a 10-15 row mosh pit.

And I was too.
I’d pick the ‘05 OSU game over the ’02 Nebraska game. The ’05 OSU game was a fight for four quarters, had Williams leaving AJ Hawk in the dust, Tamba putting Troy Smith on his head (why they reviewed that fumble I still don’t know), and Kirk Herbstreit declaring the PSU student section the best in the country. The ‘02 game wasn’t as much of a fight, and once PSU landed the big uppercut (Gardner’s Pick Six), it was just a PSU party the rest of the way.
I’m surprised the ‘94 PSU/Nebraska game hasn’t gotten more votes.

State College was crazy after the 90 ND game
I think it was better than being at the actual game.
A bunch of students broke into the locked Beaver Stadium, ripped out the goal post, carried it up the stands and threw it over the top. Then it was carried through campus to Old Main and eventually to the Paterno house. Most intense Penn State moment of my life!

They never got in the Stadium
Once upon a time being in college was allowed to be fun. Rather than have the kids damage the stadium, they simply left a set of practice goalposts on the outside for the kids to play with.
That was a fun day though. No question about it.

I was actually on College Ave when the goalposts arrived at Old Main, so I don’t know where they came from. Your account makes sense, but the story I heard that night was they got them from inside the stadium, and that’s the story I’m sticking with because it makes the whole event even more awesome.
Also, I definitely remember the goal posts being stood upright in front of Old Main, supported by the sea of humanity below, while students climbed them and the crowd sang “Fight on State” and “Hail to the Lion” (long before the days of Zombie Nation).

I vaguely recall that occurring in '97
I think the student tried to get the goal posts hours after the PSU-Ohio State game after Florida lost to LSU and got the Lions back to #1. I also recall that occurring after some random game where they beat Purdue around 1999.
In one instance, they were stopped and didn’t do anything. In the other instance, they grabbed the lacrosse goals and put them on Paterno’s lawn.

Sounds like a great game
But it was 1968. Just sayin’, unless cfbdatawarehouse is wrong.

Out of all the games that you've actually been to
That’s the one you picked. Shit.

I picked 2005 tOSU, and I'll never forgive myself for why I didn't go
My dad had gotten tickets for this game, and I was going to go with him. I was a senior in HS, I hadn’t gotten accepted to PSU yet, but knew when the offer came, there was no way I wasn’t going to be a Lion, I applied to other places simply to appease my parents who wanted me to at least apply to more than one place (side note, I was incredibly depressed when I didn’t get into main campus, but accepted the branch offer anyway).
So then someone in my family comes to the realization that I’m scheduled to take the Zugging SATs that Saturday, and now I can’t go, and my sister takes my place. So not only am I not going to this game, I’m stuck in a classroom taking the SATs for 6 freaking hours. After it was over, I met up with some friends from HS, we went out for lunch, and then hung out at somebody’s house later that night. The SATs must have drained any logical thought I had left, because I had completely forgotten about the game, and didn’t even get to watch it. I’ve regretted a lot of things so far in my 21 years, but this is way up there on the list. So, I would hands down go to this game, finally healing a deep painful wound that’s plagued me for three years. Zug dammit, I hate the SATs.

I would've just rescheduled the SATs

Unfortunately it was already paid for, and the parents would not have let me blow it off.

so
has your sister ever rubbed it in? man, what an awful situation! seriously, when your dad got home, did he ask about how you did on the SAT?
man, they owe you BIG. how could your ’rents not know how pivotal that game was gonna be? history will not remember your performance on that damnable test.

Honestly, the SATs drained so much out of me
I can’t even remember if she said anything to me, and probably wouldn’t have cared at that point. Luckily my dad did get tickets for a second game (granted it was Purdue), so I took two friends of mine up with me, so at least I got to be a part of seeing the PSU redemption unfold that season.
Even worse though, I improved my score by all of about ten points, so me taking it a second time and missing that game was totally pointless.
I think I’m squared away with my parents, they’ve graciously allowed me to use one of their four seats for season tickets the past two years when I wasn’t able to get student tickets.

Great idea for Poll - 1987 Fiesta Bowl wins in my book
This was a great game and unfortunately one I missed. Seeing the Blue and White shut down Vinnie with 5 interceptions in person would have been fantastic!
Go Joe!

Just sayin
In the poll, the 83 sugar bowl and 82 championship game are the same thing.

Unless he meant the Clemson-Nebraska game in the 1982 Orange Bowl
I doubt it though.

Tough choice
between ’81 Pitt, ’87 Fiesta Bowl, ’05 OSU. I would lean toward the Fiesta Bowl.

Which begs the question:
Do you want to see an epic struggle? Or complete smackdown of a historic titan ala Ohio State, USC in 1994?
by Mr. Rosewater on Aug 22, 2009 6:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
IMO
I’d rather watch a defensive battle for a win, a la 13-6, than a complete beat down on the 1994 tOSU scale.
by dawsonPSU10 on Aug 23, 2009 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The problem with the beatdown
When you beat a team 63-14, rather than being impressed with your dominance, the pundits tend to lean toward pointing out how bad of a pretender your opponent must be. All I remember hearing throughout the 1994 season was how easy Penn State’s schedule was.
Imagine going undefeated and beating USC, Ohio State, and Michigan and not being declared the National Champion. But that’s what happened in 1994.

2001 Ohio State
Joe beat the Bear. Historical Game….Bright spot in the “dark years”……Plus I was able to tip back a few for my 30th birthday….
Those kids could have quit in that game, never gave up.

Are you Usain's Uncle?
