PSU apparently "in the middle now" with Sharrif Floyd

ell apparently Urban Meyer's douche-tastic recruiting techniques have worked somewhat with 5-star DT, Sharrif Floyd.  He said this when asked about PSU:

"They are in the middle now I would say, but I expect them to be in there," he said. "I need to talk to Larry Johnson first. A lot of things have been happening off the field there in recent years and as they keep happening I lose a bit of interest, but they’re certainly not off my list, just down a bit."

While I'm sure these top kids are coached to remain completely neutral in who they are leaning towards, Floyd does say:

"I’ll go anyplace, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s a fit for me. But I want to make it clear I don’t have a leader, I am keeping things open and I’m not close to making a decision."

At least we're actually still in the mix with him, and not off his list, although clearly we've taken a hit thanks to the wonderfully respectfu tactics of Florida recruiting.  Is there a glimmer of hope in all of this?  Hard to find, but for me it's the beginning line of the second half of his quote: "I need to talk to Larry Johnson first."

I don't know what to think with Floyd anymore, I think we had a really great shot with him, but now I'm not so sure.  Part of me almost wants LJ Sr. to have a list ready of Florida's less than stellar legal record to counter what Urban poisoned Floyd with, but I also don't think that's our style of recruiting, nor would I really want us to resort to crapping on the images of other programs (not that Florida isn't already a Jackson Pollack painting of crap in the image department) like other schools have done to us based on a few bad incidents from the past that have been handled already (not to mention the "Joe Paterno is old and will be dead or retiring soon, you don't want to go to PSU" argument).

Sometimes I seem to lose sight of how creepy and dirty a business recruiting can be (especially with the great recruits we've gotten this year).  Stories like the one with Floyd kind of snap that back to reality pretty quickly.

My thoughts

It would be great to get Floyd but I don’t think we need to lower ourselves to the SEC recruiting level in order to get great DL talent. If Floyd’s not objective enough to see that Florida has had off the field problems themselves then it sounds like he’s made up his mind. Kids getting into trouble has nothing do with the staff or the school, it’s a personal decision. If a kid wants to get into trouble he can do it in Gainesville or State College. If Floyd is worried about getting into trouble off the field then he needs to look in the mirror rather than Centre County.

When I woke up

I had a strange feeling I’d be going to BSD to hear bad news about Floyd. But luckily this isn’t as bad as I expected. Talking to LJ Sr. is definitely a ray of hope.

I think

the story I heard is Meyer using the dismissal of Baker and Taylor to his advantage. You have to understand that the way this is going to be spun by the likes of Meyer is “look at what happened with their last big-time DT recruit, he got into a little scuffle that he didn’t even start and was kicked off the team for it, now he’s an undrafted free agent in the NFL instead of a top pick like our guys have been”

We can’t beat up our program or our recruiting when we miss on kids who just want to continue being coddled in college. Many of these kids are treated like celebrities in highschool, can show up to practice late, get into trouble all the time, and everyone looks the other way. Then they look around at schools and places like Florida will continue to coddle them. Look at Percy Harvin as an example, dude failed a drug test before the draft and then showed up to team training camp a few days late. At Florida that stuff was swept under the rug, just like it was for Havin in highschool.

"We hugged as grown men do. It was a great moment. Then, it was business as usual." -- LJ Sr.

by millzners on Aug 18, 2009 11:26 AM EDT reply actions

well, if he dropped PSU based on us disciplining guys

then I honestly wouldn’t want him. If he dropped us because of the “rash of problems” we’ve had, then I just want LJ Sr to go and say, “look, I don’t normally bash on another program, but since players getting into trouble is obviously a concern for you, I feel obligated to let you know that Florida is actually worse off than us. * show Florida’s rap sheet * Now I understand if you don’t come to Penn State for those reasons, but if that is the case, then you should really be taking a closer look at the going ons at Florida, as well”

by The JuggerNitt on Aug 18, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe I'm mistaken...

but I’m pretty sure that if Meyer did mention a specific school other than Floreda when talking to a recruit, it’s a violation of NCAA recruiting rules. LJ Sr. doing the same thing might be fair, but it would be just as much of a violation.

by leeharvey418 on Aug 18, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

That's why I included my point above

I don’t want us to have to resort to being tattle tales for other peoples problems. It’s just not the PSU way of recruiting. If Floyd is going to fall for this BS, let LJ Sr. do his best to convince him that we’ve handled every discipline problem we’ve faced, even if it means dismissing talented players. Let another school trash Florida for us so he realizes he’s been tricked into thinking something that is blown out of proportion.

That being said, if it were me, I probably would print out the laundry list of problems Florida has had to convince this kid that he hasn’t been told the entire truth. Then I wouldn’t just say, “come to PSU” like I’m sure Florida did after they trashed us, I’d say, “Now that I’ve explained what really happened, I’d like you to judge our program based on our emphasis on education standards for excellence.”

what I'd really like to do

is get some nice black pots and mail them down to Meyer.

by The JuggerNitt on Aug 18, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

This has been a little too much with Floyd

The kid is 17 years old, young and impressionable. Let’s just see what happens in the end, LOI day is still six months away. We have two great DTs in Jones and Hailes, Floyd would be great to add but he is not a necessity. We have an outstanding class, we picked up RB/WR/QB/OL/LB blue chippers. I am sure Shariff is a great kid, LJ will talk to him about things, so lets just hope he makes the right decision

by GoingDeep on Aug 18, 2009 5:23 PM EDT reply actions

I don't think anyone's overly angry with Floyd at all (at least I know I'm not)

Obviously I hope he gives us a shot and joins the team, but it is his decision. I think the outrage most of us are expressing is that this kind of trash came from another program (a two time NC winner no less) who had to resort to crapping our image to get this kid to knock us down a few rungs on his leaderboard in an effort to get the kid to commit to them. It’s shameful, and appalling (although not surprising something like this came from Meyer) to go to this level in recruiting when you’re a national power (especially when their program’s crime record is worse than ours). I have no ill will towards Floyd. Young and impressionable yes, so it’s understandable he’d fall for something like this, but it’s not his fault he was spoonfed a load crap to influence his decision.

by dawsonPSU10 on Aug 19, 2009 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I am not blaming Shariff

for anything, it is just the chatter has been so overwhelming on some of the other boards (mainly scout boards) that its teetering on too much. I agree it is shameful that the national champs have to feel so threatened by our recruiting presence that they have to resort to these distasteful tactics.

by GoingDeep on Aug 19, 2009 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I didn't mean you, I thought you were talking about us quite frankly

It’s hard to read message boards like Scout and Rivals for me, they end up turning into online shouting matches over the stupidest things. I’ve looked at posts with a number of comments thinking, “I wonder if anyone has any insight into [whatever topic]”, only to find out that 3/4 of the comments have absolutely nothing to do with the subject, its just an argument that has absolutely no helpful information whatsoever.

First of all, this poor guy. I mean, all he wanted to do was go watch his favorite team play. Now, his photo is all over the internets, popping up in videos, etc. So, I stated to make a list. Here are a few. I don’t want to be the mean bee-otch. He is probably a very nice person.

1. you KNOW he is wearing tube socks. probably with a blue or orange ring. Maybe with sandals.
2, Where is a cooler or some sort of way to carry that awful beer? The only thing that would make NL somewhat palatable is making it very cold. They are in FL. With warm, bad, beer.
3. That belt appears to have studs? (shiver)
4. Guys, that style of tank top is a poor fashion choice for most men. Poz could pull it off though

Perhaps Floyd's concern

is that he already knows that

A lot of things have been happening off the field there in recent years
is all stuff that he knows he probably would do as well. If he needs reassurance that he can do whatever he wants and won’t get kicked off the team, Florida might be a good choice for him. He might want to give FSU a look, too.

What concerns me is...

The recent national media attention we have gotten the past few years. “A lot of things have been happening off the field there in recent years and as they keep happening I lose a bit of interest.”

Every college has issues like this every year, we just got spotlighted because we were supposed to be a pristine program. Do you know how many issues I hear about here in SEC country that never get outside the local town sherrif’s office. This isn’t an issue of our program losing control, it’s about our program being a hot topic for it because if Penn State has these types of problems – what is the world coming too.

We need to make a site, or blog or something, a little more extensive than the fulmer cup that catalogs off field issues for every team in major college football. All these programs have issues – we’re just the current poster child.

From now on, any news I hear about down here will be posted to some extent, but I’d love to have a place we can direct recruits, as fans, to go and judge for themselves just how non-horrible Penn State’s issues are when compared to the country.

Anyone interested in doing this, we’ll need sources from all over for info. I’m tired of hearing how Penn State is losing control.

by MSippiNit on Aug 19, 2009 12:12 PM EDT reply actions

the biggest problem with the Fulmer Cup

is that a team/town that hides the bad behavior of their students/athletes won’t look nearly as bad as they should, but it is impossible to know about everything happening at every school (even Penn State). Heck, there could be programs out there that should have every kid behind bars, but the local cops/DA are huge fans and lack ethics, but we would never know about it. There could also be a school that just never disciplines their kids, while at the same time, a school that is pro-active at disciplining their kids will look like they have more problems, when the opposite may be true.

by The JuggerNitt on Aug 19, 2009 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

And some of those towns probably don't have D-bag DA's

that will relentlessly pursue the high profile football player cases, until the charges are eventually dropped or lessened by the Judge because there’s no evidence against some of them. How much publicity did the Austin Scott case get on ESPN? Does anyone remember them making it front page news when he was acquitted and had whatever potential career he may have had scarred for the rest of his life? (I don’t remember watching ESPN around the time this happened, so I really don’t know)

Not that I advocate our DAs waive charges or be lenient against football players who commit crimes, but this emphasizes the need to get out of office in the fall. The football program has gotten way too much publicity because a ton of the cases against the players are filed as felonies by Madeira, only to have them downgraded to misdemeanors or have all charges dropped when he can’t produce enough evidence for a felony conviction, but which half of those stories do you think gets the most attention: potential felony or downgraded charges because the DA is an ass?
