Women's Volleyball ranked #1

Penn State women's volleball, the back to back national champions are ranked #1. See the article here from gopsusports.com. The AVCA has ranked them #1 with them getting 52 of 60 first place votes. Other ranked Big Ten teams are Illinois (#10), Minnesota (#11), Michigan (#16) and Purdue (#19). Last year, the team finished 38-0 and they currently have an NCAA record 64 match winning streak.

The team opens up the home schedule on Fri 9/4 against Buffalo, which is the weekend of the Akron football game. They also have games that Sat. If you are in town, check them out.

Coming off a recent Pittsburgh Sports League Summer Volleyball championship, I am pumped for this. 1) Hot 2) Penn State girls in 3) short shorts. Three reasons to love this sport (not to mention all the winning!).

They haven’t lost a match in like two years. I wanna know who the eight fools are that didn’t rank them number one.

It's understandable

We lose three great players in Fawcett, Harmotto, and our libero Roberta Holehouse. We may be able to three-peat but it’s nowhere close to a given. And I’d give us a pretty much zero chance of going undefeated again.

How many gals did they lose after last year?

I don’t doubt we can win another NC, but I wonder if they’ll be as dominant this year as before.

There were three seniors on last years team.

Here is last year’s roster: http://www.gopsusports.com/sports/w-volley/archive/psu-w-volley-mtt-09.html. Fawcett & Harmotto will be big losses. Fawcett was a three time first team All-American, Harmotto was a two-time first team AA. Fawcett was the 2008 Big Ten & National Playr of the year. Harmotto was 2007 Big Ten Player of the Year & led the nation in hitting percentage in 2008. Holehouse was good, but since we were so dominate in other areas, her position (Libero) isn’t as important.
We have four returning All-Americans – two first team & two second team.
