Inside, Outside Will Not Run That Kickoff Gimmick
Somehow, "72 days until football" seems like a very short time, but it's still ten full weeks until Penn State takes the field against Akron. JUST TWO WEEKS UNTIL FOOTBALL!!1!1! Either way, football will be dominating every aspect of our lives before we know it, so it's time for your trusty BSD writers to pick at some issues that will not only impact Penn State, but the college football world at large. It's a little something we'll call Inside, Outside.
Inside - Injuries: they suck. The loss of Cajun Connor means the linebacking core goes from potentially All-World to potentially mostly All-American. Who do you see as the starting set of linebackers by the time the Big Ten season rolls around, and how much does this really hurt a defense that already seems a big light?
Mike: I was really looking forward to seeing Mauti play this year. But it wasn't exactly a given that he was going to start. Josh Hull started every game last year and proved to be a solid player by the end of the year. Without Mauti our lineup will be Bowman, Lee, and Hull. That's still an upgrade over last year when we had Bowman, Hull, and Sales. And with guys like Zordich, Stupar, Gbadyu, and Yancich on the bench, Penn State will be just fine at linebacker.
RUTS: The starting linebackers would have been the same with or without Mauti's injury -- Bowman, Hull, and Lee. If one of those guys should go down, however, it's a steeper drop to the next players on the depth chart. It's interesting that Bani Gbadyu appears to have been moved to MLB as Hull's backup. Gbadyu has been a tweener throughout his career at Penn State, sort of an oversized safety and an undersized linebacker. Given the lack of depth at various defensive positions, the coaching staff is getting a little creative with their personnel. The Mauti injury should also give guys like Mike Yancich and Nathan Stupar a little extra playing time.
Kevin: I'm not convinced that Hull had the MLB position locked down, at least not as a full-season gig. My only reference is this video:
But that's neither here nor there. I think we'll see Bowman, Hull, and Lee just about all year, with some obvious rotation involving the new guys, which will hopefully help us build toward replacing the two super stars in 2010.
So few teams are running the power running game, at least in any consistent or threatening sense, and so the silver lining is this still makes the LBs a very tough unit to get outside on.
Outside - Although Wisconsin hasn't been to a [BCS] bowl game since 2000, they seemed to have built some serious momentum during the first half of the decade right into Bielema's first year. And now the wheels seem to have fallen off. They duck two of the better teams in the league, Penn State and Illinois, but with last year's complete failure of a season and the recent lawsuits being filed against him by his own players: does this guy stand a chance? If not, how long until he's out, and who is his competition for Next Mediocre Big Ten Coach To Be Fired?
Mike: This is Bielema's last year. Mark it down. The guy is like Midas, only everything he touches turns into a turd. His team play with no inspiration. His recruiting classes suck and he's steadily getting worse every year. I love the fact that Paterno has killed him 86-14 since his stupid offsides kickoff stunt. We'll see how much Barry Alvarez is willing to go to bat for him after they miss a bowl game this year.
Bill Lynch is the other guy on the hot seat. And my surprise pick is Tim Brewster. This year Minnesota comes back to reality and returns to sucktitude. There will be people doubting him at the end of the year, but he won't get fired. That will be next year, and in a shocker Minnesota will bring back Glen Mason.
RUTS: Oooh, boy, Wisconsin sucked last year. They choked away second half leads against Michigan and Ohio State, were blown out by PSU, and damn near lost to Cal Poly if it wasn't for some missed extra points. If you really want to shine the turd, you can say that they lost to Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan State by a combined six points, but I don't think it's much of a secret that Bielema has to produce this season. As far as other candidates, I'd agree that Lynch at Indiana is a good candidate, but is nobody really going to bite on Rich Rodriguez at Michigan? What happens if they put up another 2-6 conference record? Nothing? Looking at their conference schedule, getting Indiana and Purdue at home appear to be the only sure wins right now. And while we're looking at schedules, I wouldn't entirely rule out a Zook Implosion, either. Illinois is going to have absolutely no defense this season, which doesn't allow for many Bad Juice Days.
Kevin: I just don't see this thing turning around. They had a lot of returning talent and were an utter failure after starting the year ranked in the Top 15. There are constant rumblings about moral, and this lawsuit over hush-hush suspensions isn't helping.
He has a chance to buy one more year with two talented teams off the schedule, but there are also some dangerous road games against Minnesota and Northwestern that could be his undoing. The real test will be if, after a season on the ropes, he can pull it together for the trip to Hawaii or if that turns into another Cal Poly. I think a loss there with no signature wins and he's done.
And I think RichRod is safe in the short term: the buyout was too big, and the contract too rich, to simply throw it away and buy him out after two years. All coaches should really be given at least 3 and maybe 4 to make a difference, shorter than that is just asking for prolonged turmoil.

I believe that’s how it should read.

Then I'm at a loss
Maybe Mike, RUTS, & Kevin are just making crap up to pass the time. The last couple of weeks of the off season can be a cruel mistress.

That, along with the creamery shutting down ice cream production is a motherZugging sign of the apocalypse, my friend. Actually that’s what I heard the Mayans predicted as the signs of the end of days in 2012..

Bielema is gone after this year
Even when his team does show up, he snatches defeat from the jaws of victory. The debacle at MSU was the single most inept coaching I have ever seen. Most times you can say “well the players..” no. Players nothing. Dude by himself got 20 yards in penalties when MSU’s drive sputtered on 3rd down, then called a timeout for MSU when they couldn’t get set for the game winning FG.
Rooting against Bielema is hilarious and satisfying, so I will miss the guy. But honestly, he’s not fit to coach an intramural softball league.

but but but
He went offsides on a kickoff 3 times in a row to end the half.
He is a football genius. (which probably explains why he shouldnt coach softball)

Backers
Wow, Bani now over to Mike. The other day I wrote this:
Last chart I read Post-Mauti injury, has Bani backing up Lavorro and Yancich behind him at the Friz. Earlier this summer, I read Yancich was battling nicely with Stupar at Fritz for 2nd string there (when they hadn’t yet decided on Lee or Mauti at Sam). Now with Mauti out, Lee is more solidified at Sam, with Stupar switched to back him up there and Bowman is more solidified as Fritz, with Bani switched to back him up there. I think they only briefly toyed with Bani at the Hayes/Latham standup DE and he is now firmly battling Yancich for backup Fritz. If Bani hasn’t tightened up his lane discipline, I wouldn’t be surprised if Yancich steals some of that time.
I guess that leaves Yancich solely at 2nd string Fritz? Is this what we’re looking at now?
Sam: Lee, Stupar, Ditto
Mike: Hull, Bani, Zordich
Fritz: Lavorro, Yancich
Redshirt: Colasanti
Even if so, I also won’t be surprised if they experiment the phuque out of all sorts of front seven arrangements. Especially if Hayes returns to some semblance of his former terror self. If I’m getting this excited about the possiblities, imagine what Scrap and Vandy are thinking.

I think it was a creation of
DickRod’s nephew. DorkRod.
Seriously, tho: Lee & Bowman on the edges? Can’t wait to see this in action!
And who’s first in to breathe Hull? Bani or Zordich? Is Bani getting bounced around cuz he can’t find a fit and may see less PT?

Well, technically
Dick is an acceptable name for someone named Richard. It just also (coincidentally of course) can be interpreted as an insult.
I think this looks about right & don't see how it would be any different going into the 1st game now...
as well as the #2’s.
- Don’t think you can ever have Bani on the outside / he’s fast but has a tendancy to overpursue
- I think Zoro will always be in the middle…even next year
- Don’t have much of an opinion on Yancich either way
- Still bumbed about Colasanti’s supposed slow development

Living in Madion,
the best Bielema “rumors” I’ve heard are the ones about him hooking up with undergrads (multiple ones!). Unconfirmed, of course.
I know it's Wisconsin
and beauty and cheddar-induced obesity are relative things (just kidding, no offense to any PSU Wisconsinites!), but a girl would have to be really, really, like dangerously drunk to even consider hooking up with Bertie. I’m talking like .30 “you need to be hospitalized and should probably consider yourself lucky to still be alive” drunk.
maybe they are all in the band and it is part of their initiation/hazing

Madison rumors...
Are also that Bielema spent mandated time in rehab over the summer. His habit for frequently materializing in local drinking establishments is likely what leads to the co-ed hook-ups.
That’s all great…unless you’re the coach of the football team.
Start your job search Brett, because you’re almost done at UW. Alvarez ought to follow him out the door as well, but that one may take a couple more years.

Addendum
In the particular stories I’ve heard, Bielema shows a preference for brown eyes, if you get my drift.
You mean he likes to hook up in the back seat of a Volkswagen?

David Putty
Does anyone else see the resemblance between Putty and Bielema? It’s not just physical appearance but also his voice and facial expressions. Do you think Brett is a Jersey Devils fan?
When we were recruiting Terrell Pryor we always hoped he'd help us take down Ohio State... and he did!

Shouldn't this be inside, offsides?
I’m in the minority, but I thought the offsides kickoff was brilliant. Even better, it eliminated the single worst rule change after only one year.
by Cairo on Aug 21, 2009 7:03 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
It was "inside" the rules
but unsportsmanlike. It’s like faking an injury or like in some of those videos…pretending the ball was bad then catching the other team “off guard”. So call it brilliant, but not as the rule intended. Thank Zug they changed it.
On TV Craig James made a jerky comment about it saying he was really puttiing it to the “Old Man”! I think apologized afterward, but it was a “bush” comment.
I believe it was...
“Stick it to the old fart!”
Poor James is still bitter that SMU didn’t win the title in ’82. All that slush fund money from boosters…wasted.

Bad idea
James can’t be accused of making great decisions. I used to like his chemistry with Lee Corso on College FB live in the Pre-Kirk Herbie era, but then he left and went to CBS. What a blunder that was. He went from center stage to almost complete oblivion. Was that his dumb choice or was he simply booted? I remember thinking how much better he was than Herbie in his early days who I have really gotten to like since he has matured in broadcasting.
When we were recruiting Terrell Pryor we always hoped he'd help us take down Ohio State... and he did!
What?
It sounds to me like you’re mixing Sportsmanship with Gamesmanship. Pretending the ball is dead and catching your opponent off guard is Gamesmanship. Wiscy’s execution of that stupid rule?: also Gamesmanship. And, imho, not at all unsporstmanlike.
Faking an injury is rigth on the fence and probably can be fairly categorized as both. It can be clever gamesmanship (though clearly ‘bush’), but is also pretty damn unsportsmanlike.

“And, imho, not at all unsporstmanlike.”
How is it sportsmanlike to play outside the intention of the rule? That’s pretty much the definition of “unsportsmanlike.”

You're forgetting one thing
1) It was dangerous. Kickoff returns are some of the most dangerous plays in a football game, and he ran what should’ve been one three times, and made it more dangerous by adding confusion.
2) It actually gave Wisconsin an advantage in a close game.
So he put kids at risk (did he tell them not to hit the Penn State guys? Nope) – including his own – to both make a point and gain an advantage in a game. That’s douchebaggery.
