Matt McGloin earns PSU Scholarship
From ScantonTimes.com NewsFlash (via E-Mail):
"Former standout West Scranton quarterback Matt McGloin has earned a scholarship at Penn State University. He was a walk-on last year, and will be a redshirt freshman this season."
Does this have any impact on the PSU scholarship allocations? I just got this Scranton Times via e-mail notification.

It does say that we're at the max amount of scholarship players.
Dunno what it means for how many ships for the class though.

Awesome
I like it when a walk-on gets a schollie. Even a guy who is likely a career back-up.

Lots of career back-ups have scholarships.
Lots of 5* players never pan out.
Kids like Astorino start while AJ Wallace sucks rocks.
You never know.

Scranton Times PSU Blog.
From Donnie Collins of Blog, Sweart, and Tears

“A very proud moment for Scranton, as McGloin was told by Joe Paterno at around 9 p.m. tonight that he earned a scholarship.
More to come. I just talked to Matt, who is obviously pumped up about this, and I’m working the story for the newspaper now."

So, in 2010...
We’ll have 4 scholarship QBs with Jones and Bolden coming in? Is that normal?

Is it more of a
“just for this year only” thing? That would be my guess.

I doubt it
If you think he’s worth giving a scholarship in the first place, I can’t see alienating him by pulling it out from under him after one year.

unless you tell him
hey, we have a schollie freed up this year (for some obvious reasons), and this year only. You want it, or you want to pay $?

congrats
To Little Red. I guess getting yelled at by DC leaving the QB meeting really helps.
I don’t see it as a waste, he is the new Paul C…..minus the no drinking/straight A’s

Time to play devils advocate/jerk mode
Is this something USC or Florida or Texas does?
It just seems that with an 85 scholarship limit you can’t afford to be handing out Scholarships to Walk on players…If this was a one year thing because of McDonald and a few other players then that’s understandable; however, if this is for the rest of his time at PSU I have to wonder why you would do this.
I know PSU is supposed to be a classy joint, do things the “right way” , “Success with honor”, the whole bit…But I just don’t know how you can compete for national championships when you’re giving away scholarships like this.
